Resumo
CECAV is organized in 2 research groups: (1) Sustainable integrated meat production and (2) Animal health and Welfare.
CECAV's main objective is to pursue its internationalization strategy, which involves actively seeking out participation in European projects and networks. CECAV researchers are part of 6 COST actions, 4 of which were approved in 2022, and 2 in 2023. Their involvement includes animal welfare, antimicrobial resistance, vector-borne diseases, osteoarthritis research, meat safety for game animals, and livestock phenomics. CECAV researchers have participated in the European Horizon Project WelFarmers since 2023, which aims to improve pig welfare by addressing various topics. CECAV aims to maintain connections with Brazil through its involvement in projects funded by FAPEST.
CECAV will organize scientific events such as congresses, seminars, short-term courses, and workshops to strengthen its scientific areas. CECAV will hold an international congress each year on a topic related to its scientific areas. The unit will provide training opportunities for graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and professionals in animal-related fields. CECAV aims to promote public awareness of science and make informal contributions to science education. The researchers' scientific activity will be presented annually through numerous activities organized by UTAD and Lusófona University.
CECAV aims to transfer knowledge through industry and producer association projects funded by public institutions or private companies. The directive board is currently focusing on this point, and there are ongoing projects such as the FeedValue project approved in 2023. CECAV encourages practical work in enterprise environments for MSc and PhD students.
CECAV will support UTAD's PhD programs in Animal Science and Veterinary Science, and a new PhD Program-One Health. Researchers will organize a yearly workshop for doctoral students to present their work.
Researchers will continue the collaboration with veterinary authorities, hunting associations, and conservation associations to strengthen their studies on wild animals. CECAV collaborates with the Veterinary Hospital of UTAD and Lusófona University to develop studies on comparative medicine and transfer their findings to human medicine. CECAV's partnership with the Wildlife Recovery Centre (CRAS) of UTAD will also continue to play a crucial role in maintaining the health of wild animals and wildlife.
The Associated Laboratory of Animal and Veterinary Science (Al4AnimalS) was established in 2021, from a partnership CECAV, CIISA and CECA.
CECAV, through UTAD and Lusófona, expressed interest in hiring five researchers as part of the FCT tenure competition, in the following research topics: (1) Zoonoses, (2) Cancer and (3) Meat safety (UTAD) and (1) Animal health, welfare, and One Health and (2) Farm animal clinic (Lusófona University).
