Resumo
Vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) is a significant infection caused by Candida species, remaining a common disease that affects millions of women every year. Untreated VVC may lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility, ectopic pregnancy, menstrual disorders and systemic candidiasis, which is linked to high mortality. Also, VVC causes physical and mental distress, considerable direct/indirect economic costs and enhanced susceptibility in immunosuppressed patients. Several antimycotic agents are available but most of them are ineffective. It is therefore important to develop effective, inexpensive and non-toxic alternative treatments. Natural products such as essential oils (EOs) can be studied as alternative therapies. EOs are well-known antimicrobial agents, with a wide range of activities, including antifungal properties. EOs have also been shown to possess good anti-Candida activity, being safe and more effective in the relief of Candidiasis symptoms than common drugs. So, the aim of this plan is to evaluate alternatives for VVC treatment using EOs.
