Androgenetic alopecia is a genetically determined disorder characterized by the gradual conversion of terminal hairs into indeterminate, and finally into vellus, hairs. It is an extremely prevalent disease that lacks effective and definitive treatments. Recent research studies suggest that tackling the dysregulation of the hair follicle niche induced by insufficient vascularization, excessive reactive oxygen species, and increased inflammation, is the key to the development of strategies with innovative therapeutic potential.
In this PhD project, we propose a targeted microneedle patch taking advantage of melatonin’s antioxidant activity, platelet-rich plasma’s hair regeneration capacity, and marine polymers’ chemistry. Following characterization, biocompatibility, and microenvironment remodeling effects, dermal delivery studies in skin models will be performed to assess the penetration and absorption profiles. Successful overcome of the skin barrier and perifollicular microenvironment remodeling will demonstrate the potential of targeted treatment for patients in an advanced stage of androgenetic alopecia, with abnormal loss of hair density.
