Resumo

Adipose tissue is responsible for energy storage and has also endocrine functions, both relevant for a healthy status. Obesity induces an increase of adipose tissue volume and changes linked to hallmarks of aging, namely cellular senescence. However, senescence in adipose tissue as a critical mechanism linking obesity to ageing acceleration is not fully investigated. Even more deleterious than the increase of adipose tissue volume, is its severe reduction or lipodystrophy. In fact, children with Hutchison-Gilford progeria syndrome have severe lipodystrophy, that has beenlinked, at least partially, to premature and accelerated severe aging phenotype. Thus, we aim at investigating strategies to delay aging that occur in two conditions -obesity and progeria- by specifically targeting the adipose tissue. We will use experimental mouse models, genetic and pharmacological approaches well established in supervisor laboratories. We expect to generate new knowledge about the adipose tissue as an innovative target to age-related diseases.
