Access the national information on scientific and technological funding in Portugal

Technical Information

Find detailed information about the data provided by the SciPROJ Portal, including its origin, scope, and technical specifications.

  • Scope

    Em 2017 a FCCN serviços digitais da FCT, ao abrigo do programa PTCRIS, deu início ao desenvolvimento do registo nacional de financiamento de ciência e tecnologia – SciPROJ.

    SciPROJ brings together, in a single database, information on both national and international funding that supports scientific and technological activities carried out in Portugal.

    The information available in SciPROJ is based on the OpenAIRE CERIF profile, as proposed by the OpenAIRE Guidelines for CRIS Managers (v1.2.0), and adapted to the context of the Portuguese scientific and academic system.

    Given the mission of SciPROJ and the funding triad (institutions and infrastructures, people, and projects) that supports the Portuguese scientific system, the funding recorded in this registry is described using five entities from the OpenAIRE CERIF profile: funding, people, projects, organizations, and equipment. The attributes that define each entity, as well as the relationships established between them, follow the CERIF 1.6 XML data model.

    The development of SciPROJ follows two main lines of action: a) the continuous enrichment of the registry; and b) the API service. The API service enables the sharing and reuse of the information contained in SciPROJ as open data, allowing its integration with entities and services within both the national and international scientific systems.

  • Data Source

    SciPROJ includes records of funding awarded (completed and ongoing) to science and technology activities carried out in Portugal by national and international funding agencies.

    Most of the data recorded in SciPROJ originates from third‑party systems, namely the funding organisations that issue the records.

    1. Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT);
    2. National Innovation Agency (ANI);
    3. Managing Authority of QREN (National Strategic Reference Framework);
    4. Managing Authority of Portugal 2020 (PT2020);
    5. European Union / European Commission (EU).

    The data presented on the portal’s funding page corresponds to the information available during the funding approval period. Information regarding the DOI (Digital Object Identifier) is obtained through the registration of funding instruments in Crossref .

  • SciPROJ Portal

    The SciPROJ Portal provides access to a subset of data recorded in SciPROJ that describes scientific activities funded and carried out in Portugal.

    The platform allows project searches through:

    • Simple Search, which performs a global search using keywords. The personal names searched correspond to the principal investigators and/or co‑principal investigators.
    • Advanced Search, which enables result refinement using filters such as: Title (full name or partial), Principal Investigator or Co‑Investigator (full name or partial), CIÊNCIAID, ORCID ID, Funding Managing Entity, Funding Instrument, Start Date (year), and End Date (year).

    Search results can be sorted according to the following criteria:

    • Title Ascending (A–Z) and Title Descending (Z–A); Sorting follows this order: special characters, numbers, and alphabetical order of letters.
    • Start Date Ascending (oldest to newest);
    • Start Date Descending (newest to oldest).

    Each listed result leads to a page detailing a funded project and includes the following data categories:

    • Project Data
    • Researcher Data;
    • Institution Data;
    • Funding Data.
  • Project Data

    Title: Title of the funded activity. The title may be presented in Portuguese (PT) and English (EN), depending on the information available at the source.

    • The title field will be filled with “Sem título” (PT) and “Untitled” (EN) whenever the title is not available from the source.
    • When the title is available in only one language in the source, only that language will be provided in order to minimize translation errors. In these cases, titles in other languages—such as Spanish (ES), Italian (IT), Latin (LA), among others—may exceptionally be made available.

    DOI(Digital Object Identifier): alphanumeric identifier of the funding record, registered with Crossref. The process of assigning DOIs to FCT-funded projects began in September 2023 and will proceed in a gradual and sustained manner. Whenever a DOI is associated with a funding record, a notification will be sent to the Principal Investigator and/or the funding Beneficiary.

    Reference: identifier of the funded activity assigned by the funding managing entity. Information sourced directly from the original record.

    Project start and end date: the expected time frame for carrying out the funded activity.

    • FCT – R&D Projects (PRJ) and R&D Institutions (UID):
      The start date of the funded activity corresponds to the date of signature of the Acceptance Term. Information sourced from the original record;
    • FCT – Advanced Training Fellowships (DFA):
      The fellowship end date is only recorded when the fellowship period has concluded. Whenever an end date is provided in the source, that date will prevail. When no actual end date is available, the displayed date corresponds to the expected end date, calculated by adding the total fellowship duration to the start date. Thus, the principle applied is: if the end date is earlier than the current date, it is considered the actual end date. If the end date is later than the current date, it is considered a projected end date;
