What are cookies?

Cookies are text files containing small amounts of information that are stored on personal computers (PCs) or other devices (e.g., smartphones, tablets, etc.) each time users visit a website through an internet browser. Cookies allow websites to store certain user information, eliminating the need to repeatedly enter the same data or preferences. On subsequent visits, the browser sends these cookies to the website that generated them and, in some cases, to other websites different from the original source.

Cookies are information files that may serve several functions, such as storing the user’s preferences for certain types of information or storing data related to their visit to each website. Their main purpose is to recognize the user during their visits to websites, along with their configuration settings and preferences.

The use of cookies does not affect internet access and does not identify the individual user, but only the device used.

2. What are the functions of cookies?

Cookies perform several functions, namely assisting in the management and updating of website content, as well as helping to understand how websites are used. They facilitate users’ navigation by storing their preferences and, in general, by improving the user experience, while also ensuring that websites display relevant content to each user. They are, therefore, tools that contribute to the continuous improvement of the user experience.

3. Types of Cookies

Entity responsible for their management

First-party cookies – Cookies sent to the users’ device from a computer or domain managed by the website owner and from which the service requested by the user is provided.

Third-party cookies – Cookies sent to the users’ device from a computer or domain not managed by the website owner, but by another entity that processes the data collected through cookies. This includes cookies installed from a computer or domain managed by the website owner but whose information is managed by third parties.

Duration for which they remain active

Session cookies – Cookies designed to collect and store data while users access a website. They are generally used to store information that only needs to be kept for the provision of the service requested by users on a single occasion (e.g., a list of purchased products).

Persistent cookies – Cookies where data remains stored on the device and can be accessed and processed for a period defined by the website owner, and whose retention period may vary from a few minutes to several years.

Purpose

Technical cookies – Cookies that allow users to browse a website, platform, or application and use its different features or services, e.g., controlling data traffic and communication, identifying sessions, accessing restricted areas, remembering items that make up an order, sharing content through social networks, etc.

Personalization cookies – Cookies that allow users to access the website with certain predefined general settings based on criteria in their device, such as language, browser type used to access the service, or regional settings of the location from which the user accesses the website.

Analytics cookies – Cookies that allow the website owner to monitor and analyze user behavior. The information collected through this type of cookies is used to measure website, application, or platform activity and to create browsing profiles of users in order to introduce improvements based on the analysis of the usage data.

Advertising cookies – Cookies that enable the management, as efficiently as possible, of advertising spaces which, when appropriate, the website owner has included in a website, application, or platform from which the requested service is provided based on criteria such as the edited content or the frequency with which ads are displayed.

Behavioral advertising cookies – Cookies that allow for the most efficient management of advertising spaces which, when appropriate, the website owner has included in a website, application, or platform from which the requested service is provided. These cookies store information on users’ behavior obtained through continuous observation of their browsing habits, which allows the development of a specific profile to display ads based on that profile.

4. What types of cookies are used by PTCRIS?

Essential cookies:
Strictly necessary/technical cookies: These cookies are essential because they ensure navigation on the website and the use of its features, including recording whether the user has authorized the use of cookies on the website. This type of cookie does not require the user’s prior consent for storage.
Data retention period: one year after collection.

Non-essential cookies:
Functional/personalization cookies: These cookies allow websites to remember information about user choices, such as language, region of access, and user-defined customization of the browsing experience. These cookies expire at the end of the user’s session (e.g., when the browser window is closed) or may persist longer to remember user preferences if accepted.
Data retention period: one year after collection.

Analytics cookies:
These cookies are used to analyze how users interact with a website and to monitor its performance, for example, which pages generate the most visits or whether any error messages are displayed to the user. This enables the provision of a high-quality experience by customizing content and quickly identifying and correcting issues. These cookies are used for continuous improvement and statistical analysis purposes.

To collect this type of cookies, FCT uses the Google Analytics tool and its respective cookies. Click here to consult the Google Analytics Privacy Policy.

Data retention period: two years after collection.

5. User consent for the collection of non‑essential cookies

Under the applicable legislation on privacy and data protection, non‑essential cookies are considered personal data.

Through PTCRIS, the following categories of personal data will be collected with the users’ prior consent: browsing and tracking data. Authentication information will also be collected, without the need for consent, as it is essential for the proper and normal functioning of PTCRIS.

For information on how FCT processes personal data, the rights you have in this regard and how you can exercise them, as well as the security measures implemented to ensure the protection of your data, please consult our Privacy Poilicy.

Pursuant to Law No. 41/2004 of 18 August (as amended by Law No. 16/2022 of 16 August and Law No. 46/2012 of 29 August), the installation and use of cookies depends on the user’s consent, except where cookies are used to: (a) transmit a communication over an electronic communications network; (b) provide an information society service expressly requested by the subscriber or user.

Users may choose whether or not to provide their personal data.

By default, FCT only collects essential cookies required for the correct and normal functioning of PTCRIS.

By clicking the “I accept cookies” button, the PTCRIS User is consenting to the provision of data through the cookies that they agree to allow, under this Policy and our Privacy Policy.

The User may choose not to give consent by clicking the “I do not accept cookies” button. Please note, however, that disabling cookies may prevent some PTCRIS services from functioning correctly, partially or entirely affecting navigation, which may impact the user experience on PTCRIS.

Please note that disabling cookies may result in some or all available functionalities becoming restricted or unavailable, negatively impacting the browsing experience.
