Abstract

Growth in aquatic food supply can only come from aquaculture, as fisheries are fully exploited. However, there are several constraints to the sustainable expansion of the sector, such as increasingly expensive and unsustainable feed and negative environmental impacts. Aquaculture must adopt sustainable management practices (i.e. provision of sustainable feed at competitive prices with reduced dependence on wild-catch fisheries, reduction of environmental impacts by having more efficient waste stream management, and lower carbon footprints). The waste streams from recirculating aquaculture systems waste streams may be repurposed and valorized as nutrient-rich fertilizer/substrate for the local production of novel sustainable ingredients such as microalgae, mushrooms, mealworm and redworm. This PhD study aims to evaluate the dietary use of these novel ingredients, produced under a Circular Economy model, on the growth and metabolic performances and nutritional quality of farmed rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss).
