Abstract
The interaction between atmospheric flows and spot fires can cause high-intensity propagation phenomena such as those observed in the fires that occurred in Portugal in 2017, which are poorly understood. The extreme fire behavior, which went far beyond the predictive capacity of existing models and intervention by the authorities, led to a consortium of institutions with experience in the study of fire behavior, meteorology, and modelling of complex physical processes to invest in the deepening of these problems in order to achieve better knowledge of them and their incorporation into the decision-making and training processes.
