Abstract

10.2 Summary in English for general dissemination purposes CEC's hallmark as producer of internationally excellent research is its work on what CEC has been calling "a Portuguese approach to the Classics". While continuing to produce top quality research in Classical literature, CEC's main focus is on the transmission of ancient texts, how they were read, the new genres into which they were transformed and the challenging attitudes towards them, particularly in Portugal. CEC has identified ten High Potential Research Teams (HPRTs), anchored in small teams leading highly focused projects. The prospective research outputs of 8 of these HPRTs will make available to the international academic world new material, related to the Portuguese/Iberian contexts. These HPRTs are organized in four thematic areas: 1. CLASSICA: aims at examining classical texts; 2. HISPANIA LATINA: CEC's core research area. It produces critical editions and analyses of Latin Iberian/Portuguese post-classical texts, assessing their role in the transmission of classical models in Europe and in the world; 3. RESCRIPTA: examines the reception of the Classics in literature written in Portuguese; 4. DIA/LOGOS: approaches Classics as fundamental European cultural heritage, opening paths to interdisciplinary work and exploratory fields of research. Within this context, CEC has three priorities: 1) to produce internationally excellent research; 2) to attract highly motivated and qualified students and researchers; and 3) to disseminate its research outputs to society. 1) TO PRODUCE INTERNATIONALLY EXCELLENT RESEARCH CEC is committed to the production of internationally excellent research. Its strategy is to support teams with the greatest potential (HPRT) so that they can achieve excellence in their research outputs. To do this, it is fundamental to provide these research teams with the necessary resources, as well as to support their participation in the most relevant networks and their contribution to leading publishing media. 2) TO ATTRACT NEW RESEARCHERS AND STUDENTS In order to match the best international research standards, it is fundamental to attract high-level researchers and well qualified students. In order to do this, it is crucial to offer competitive research positions and scholarships. CEC participates in the PhD Program in Classics (U. Lisbon). CEC is also committed to the internationalization of its students. It supports their participation in international networks and meetings, and the publication of their research outputs in international journals for early career researchers. 3) TO DISSEMINATE RESEARCH CEC's research has extraordinary potential for diversified and inter- and transdisciplinary dissemination. HRPTs strive so that their research outputs become digitally accessible, thus enabling academic dissemination. Also, CEC's outreach activities aim to introduce its work to a wider public. CEC is chaired by a Director and a Secretary, assisted by a Scientific Council of all Integrated members who hold a PhD. 10.3 Summary in English for evaluation CEC's hallmark as producer of world-leading researchis its work on what CEC has been calling "a Portuguese approach to the Classics". This encompasses the study of the transmission of ancient texts, of how they were read, of the new genres into which they were transformed, of the authors who engaged with Classics, and of the challenging attitudes towards Classical texts, particularly in Portugal. In this area, there is still much to be done in Portugal, where many primary sources are still unavailable and are unknown even to researchers. CEC assumes the task of investing in the edition and critical study of the huge set of still poorly known or completely unknown Latin texts from Western Iberia and, more specifically, from the Portuguese territory. This core task is accompanied by research in the classical authors themselves, as they provided the models emulated and contested in the post-classical period. It is also accompanied by innovative research in reception studies and by an investment in interdisciplinary projects. These research activities have two concrete and important global outputs. First, they provide the across-fields national and international academic community with new materials and perspectives that would otherwise be unavailable to them. Second, they have an impact on the non-academic community, raising awareness of the Classical cultural heritage. CEC has strategically identified ten High Potential Research Teams (HPRTs), anchored in small teams normally formed by senior and junior researchers leading highly focused projects. 1. MYTHOI: ancient readings and scholarship; 2. FLAVII: Flavian poetry; 3. EPIGRAPHICA: Roman, Late Antique and early medieval epigraphy; 4. WISIGOTHICA: Visigothic hagiography and historiography; 5. CODOLPOR: Corpus documentale Latinum Portucalense; 6. EPISTEME: Portuguese early modern science; 7. SINICA: Portuguese Jesuit Latin texts in/on Asia; 8. HVMANISTICA: Camões and the Portuguese Humanism; 9. ESCRITORAS: Portuguese women writers; 10. WSFC: What stage for the Classics? CEC will dedicate its budget, through both hiring research staff and providing graduate training, to these HPRTs, providing them with an affiliation, access to resources and facilities, and administrative and, hopefully, financial support. These teams with their research projects are CEC's first level of organization. HPRTs and their projects fall under four thematic areas, designed to coordinate activities efficiently and to promote cohesion and communication between groups: 1. CLASSICA: aims at examining classical texts. (coord. W. Dominik); 2. HISPANIA LATINA: CEC's core research area. It produces critical editions and analyses of Latin Iberian/Portuguese post-classical texts, assessing their role in the transmission of classical models in Europe and in the world (coord. P. F. Alberto); 3. RESCRIPTA: examines the reception of the Classics in literature written in Portuguese. (coord. C. Pimentel); 4. DIA/LOGOS: approaches classics as fundamental European cultural heritage, opening paths to interdisciplinary work and exploratory fields of research. (coord. J. P. Serra). Within this context, CEC has three priorities: 1) to produce internationally excellent research; 2) to attract highly motivated and qualified students and researchers; and 3) to disseminate its research outputs to society. 1) TO PRODUCE INTERNATIONALLY EXCELLENT RESEARCH CEC is committed to the production of internationally excellent and, when possible, world-leading research. Its strategy is to support teams with the greatest potential (HPRT) so that they might achieve excellence in their research outputs. To do this, it is fundamental to provide these research teams with the necessary research resources, as well as to support their participation in the most relevant networks and their contribution to leading publishing media. 2) TO ATTRACT NEW RESEARCHERS AND STUDENTS In order to match the best international research standards, it is fundamental to attract high-level researchers and well qualified students. It is, hence, crucial to offer competitive research positions and scholarships. CEC participates in the PhD Program in Classics (U. Lisbon). CEC is also committed to the internationalization of its students. It supports their participation in international networks and meetings, and the publication of their research outputs in international journals for early career researchers. 3) TO DISSEMINATE RESEARCH CEC's research has extraordinary potential for diversified and transdisciplinary dissemination. CEC strongly believes that Classics is for all. Therefore, CEC is committed to further Open Access research. Some HRPTs already have digitally accessible outputs that enable academic dissemination. All HPRTs are expected to publish their research outcomes in indexed journals and in prestigious international publishers in the area. CEC publishes two academic journals: Euphrosyne is indexed in the main databases and is now the leading Portuguese journal in Classics. The eClassica is an online publication aiming at early career researchers (not only from CEC) who wish to disseminate the first results of their work. Finally, CEC will create in 2018 an outreach unit, intending to develop four programs in four years: education; research communication-publications; research communication-exhibitions; decentralizing Classics. CEC is chaired by a Director and a Secretary, assisted by a Scientific Council of all Integrated members who hold a PhD. It also has an extended Scientific Advisory Board of six internationally renowned scholars from Italy, Spain, the UK and the US, and an Honorary Researchers committee of eight scholars, who have contributed for long to turn CEC in what it is today.
