Abstract
10.2 Summary in English for general dissemination purposes
The plan of activities of SYSTEC concerns the Advance of the Scientific& Technological state-of-the-art in Systems, Control, Optimization and Estimation and its application to emerging Cyber Physical Frameworks for Networked Robotic Vehicles, Renewable Energy and Mobility, and Advanced Manufacturing.
The R&D in Systems, Control, Optimization and Estimation will be carried in the context of the networks of excellence that SYSTEC researchers built over the years, and, now, will be steered to increase the results applicability to real-life problems, and to a greaterengagement of stakeholders. Moreover, a greater articulation with the challenges arising in large classes of complex systems will be pursued in the context of the associated emerging Cyber Physical Systems:
•Networked Robotic Vehicle Systems (NRVS). Design of advanced NRVS to address key societal challenges involving natural sciences, environment, sustainable management of natural resources, climate, defence and security.
•Advanced Production Systems. Design and control of competitive manufacturing systems able to cope with, often abrupt changes in the supply-demand chain and the tight coordination of its subsystems.
•Renewable Energy and Mobility. Design and management of, either stand-alone or networked via the grid, sets of multiple renewable energy sources, and of novel electrical traction systems to enable their smart management.
This spans from system and control theoretical challenges arising in complex systems in which humans, heterogeneous vehicles and other devices are networked to achieve a common greater goal, to infrastructure development (software and hardware), and intensive field experimentation, even reaching out the operational character, to provide the lessons to be learned essential to feed the discovery process.
This R&D effort will be articulated with outreach activities to key societal and economic actors, notably in private sector, to support the emergence of start-ups and to attract funding to R&D projects with SYSTEC geared to increase their competitiveness and promote highly qualified employment. The articulation of FEUP and ISR is instrumental to high quality strategic academia-industry cooperation.
The SYSTEC agenda is aligned with the strategic national R&D&I initiatives through its contributions tothe Atlantic, and UT Austin|Portugal CoLAB, AIR Centre, among others.
Internationalization of SYSTEC activities is critical to ensure: developments at the state-of-the-art forefront, and impact of its R&D&I products and services in the global economy. This effort – involving ISR - includes the excellence-seeking scientific networking, and the one geared to promote the impact of SYSTEC R&D&I results in pertinent economy sectors and societal challenges.
The cohesion of national academic communities by increasing the inclusivity, with emphasis on Polytechnic Institutes and Universities in the national periphery will be carefully considered in SYSTEC’s activities.
10.3 Summary in English for evaluation
The plan of activities of SYSTEC is presided by a win-win articulation of its R&D activities with Society interaction targeting the impact in the Economy and the capacitation of human resources to promote high qualified jobs. The R&D agenda will be carried in international networks of excellence that SYSTEC researchers built over the years and targets the Advancement of the state-of-the-art in Systems, Control, Optimization and Estimation and its application to emerging Cyber Physical Frameworks for Networked Robotic Vehicles, Renewable Energy and Mobility, and Advanced Manufacturing.
The R&D activities in Systems, Control, Optimization and Estimation will be steered to increase the results applicability, and the engagement of stakeholders. This encompasses constrained Optimal Control Theory to address application and computational requirements, and special systems: sweeping processes, multi-processes, and impulsive systems. Biomedical, robotics, energy, agriculture management, hydrodynamics, and magneto-hydrodynamics problems are envisaged applications. Novelidentification algorithms considering realistic data requirements will be investigated and applied to physiological systems, e-nose port wine classification, and gas leaks monitoring. Model and control of complex biomedical systems for integrated solutions to custom drugs administration. Coding theory, by exploiting connections between convolutional codes and discrete dynamic systems, behavioural, and nD systems will be investigated by extending conventional results.
Moreover, a greater articulation of the above research with the challenges arising in large classes of complex systems will be pursued in the context of the emerging Cyber Physical Systems (CPS):
• Networked Robotic Vehicle Systems (NRVS). Design of advanced NRVS to address key societal challenges involving natural sciences, environment, sustainable management of natural resources, climate, defence and security.
Development of theory and algorithms for the coordination of NRVs to observe oceanic phenomena according to the requirements imposed by the progress of ocean sciences which encompass multiple scales, from local prey to global biogeochemical fluxes.
The underlying conceptual developments are more general and include: Distributed estimation and localization, distributed optimization and cloud-based control framework for coordination of multi-agent systems, fault detection and isolation for multiple CPS extending current observer approaches, design of nonlinear system tools and algorithms for mobile robotics with provably guarantees, and development of tools for analysis and synthesis in the framework of large-scale, big-data, model and data-driven systems.
Planning and execution control theories for NRVS to address scalability, distributed autonomy and long endurance challenges arising in science studies focused on long duration missions in remote and communications challenged locations will be developed together with further enhancement of the LSTS software toolchain to implement the new concepts with hardware-in-the-loop and field studies evaluation and testing. These include long duration field studies with the LSTS fleet to study dynamic ocean features based on the novel scientific advancements.
Moreover, other application of these scientific developments to shop floor manipulation and autonomous mobility in unstructured environments, and cooperative motion of multiple robotic vehicles for data gathering, searching, surveillance, exploration and survey operations will be considered.
• Advanced Production Systems. Design and control of competitive manufacturing systems able to cope with, often abrupt changes in the supply-demand chain and the tight coordination of its subsystems. The CPS paradigm will be enriched with smart components and the notion of changeability will be investigated by custom data analytics, mining and machine learning applied on real-time data. The validation of the CPS framework in real industrial applications via online recursive learning on experimental data of selected case studies, by assessing how new control structures are defined with new information reflecting changes in operational needs, and response performance.
• Renewable Energy and Mobility. Design and management of systems with multiple renewable energy sources, and of novel electrical traction systems to enable their smart management. By articulating power electronics, power systems, estimation and optimization tools the challenges of integrating data forecasting and monitoring will be addressed to support the design of: Smart generation systems with multiple renewable energy sources, management and control for renewable energy incorporating ultra-short term forecasts electric traction systems accounting for life-cycle operations.
This R&D effort will be articulated with outreach effort to key societal and economic actors, notably in private sector, to support the emergence of start-us and to attract private funding to R&D projects with SYSTEC geared to increase their competitiveness and promote high qualified employment. The articulation of FEUP and ISR is instrumental to the strategic academia-industry cooperation.
The SYSTEC agenda is aligned with the strategic national R&D&I initiatives through its contributions to the Atlantic, and UT Austin|Portugal CoLABs, AIR Centre, among others.
