Abstract
10.2 Summary in English for general dissemination purposes
CEMMPRE is an interdisciplinary R&D Unit with 74 integrated researchers with PhD, 63 without PhD and 25 collaborators, working on fundamental and applied research in Mechanical and Materials Engineering and other related areas such as Industrial Innovation, Robotization and Production Transformation. Its research is aligned with RIS3 of the Centre Region of Portugal, Horizon 2020 and UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. CEMMPRE is organized into two research groups: Mechanical and Intelligent Manufacturing, and Materialsand Processes, which conduct research in the following key areas: Intelligent Manufacturing, Design& Testing, Surface and Interface Engineering, Nanomaterials and Nanotechology, Bioengineering, and Advanced Sensor Systems.
The main objectives for the next 5 years are:
-Pursue research with regional, national and international impact and participate in international infrastructures and networks;
-Increase the number of undergraduate and graduate research grant opportunities;
-Contribute to the employment of highly-qualified scientists in Portugal;
-Gradually increase the scientific indicatorsup to 2022 with dissemination based on the concepts of Open Science, Open Innovation, and Openness to the World;
-Build and maintain shared research facilities and equipment.
Plan of Activities:
Research activity will take societal and social policy issues into account and will contribute to the goals of creation and development of new sustainable technologies and advanced materials, supported by the following strengths: funding from public and private institutions/companies, multidisciplinarity and know-how of the team, strong collaboration with international institutions / networks of excellence and existence of modern and well-equipped laboratories. CEMMPRE will focus special attention on the need to improve impact indicators such as increasing the number of publications and patents, through the training of new PhD researchers with an industrial focus, and better direct implementation of the research results in industrial environments in 6 areas: intelligent manufacturing; design and testing; surface and Interface engineering; bioengineering; nanomaterials and nanotechology; advanced sensor systems.
The different areas were decided on considering the multidisciplinary nature of the research team as well as the social impact of the expected outputs. CEMMPRE will strongly promote the establishment of important collaborations between the researchers internally and externally, to explore the interfaces between the different areas of knowledge. New cutting-edge technologies will be developed in relation to some of the most important societal challenges that have real impact benefitting citizens, namely: health, sustainable growth, circular economy and green intelligent manufacturing technologies. This proposal will be of paramount importance for the technical training of the next generation of highly-educated and qualified people.
