Abstract
10.2 Summary in English for general dissemination purposes
The trilogy circulation, appropriation, innovation guides CIUHCT's scientific agenda for 2018-22, giving coherence to its collective projects and at the same time supporting its plurality of themes and historical periods. CIUHCT reasserts its strategic goals: 1) to inscribe Science, Technology and Medicine (STM) in historical narratives;2) to increase the international presence of Portuguese History of STM (HSTM); 3) to foster transdisciplinary STM approaches; 4) to assess contemporary issues through the HSTM lenses. CIUHCT's objectives are embodied in its on-going flagships: Four Edited volumes on HSTM in Portugal; Dictionary of Biographies of Portuguese STM actors; Bibliographical Guide to HSTM in Portugal; Open access e-journal HoST. New collective outputs privilege internationalization, training, outreach, open access and digital humanities.
INTERNATIONALIZATION
Besides two major international meetings (history of tropical medicine and history of plastics), two volumes are proposed, written in English and to be published in reputed publishers: The history and material culture of STM in Portugal and the Companion to the history of science from a European perspective.
TRAINING
Training aimed at international and national audiences includes: 1) The 2021 Anthropocene Campus with transdisciplinary intensive seminar courses, and connections to the Anthropocene Curriculum (HKW, MPIWG); 2) Intensive Material Culture Boot Camps providing basic training in material culture as a tool to object-based HSTM; 3) Advanced and Short Courses exploring interface between HSTM and Citizen Science.
OUTREACH
We highlight: 1) STM Knowledge: Made in Portugal. Documentaries in English on the multiple Portuguese STM contributions to world history; 2) Three major Exhibitions: intersection of cartography and early modern science; role of Portuguese medicine in a worldwide context; pocket exhibition Anthropocene Cabinet of Curiosities, a condensed version of the exhibit at the Deutsche Museum; 3) HSTM Touristic itineraries in Lisbon; 4) Inclusive Societies. Experimental object-based activities bridging the gap between migrant Lusophone communities and scientific collections of their countries of origin.
OPEN ACCESS AND DIGITAL HUMANITIES
The following projects are underlined: 1) The Bibliographical Guide to the History of STM in Portugal makes its database available to users' inputs; the Dictionary of Biographies is explored with Digital Humanities storytelling techniques; 2) STMgram database and online site on photography of STM in Portugal (1860-1974); 3) Inquisition in action. Database and online site on the Inquisition censoring of scientific books in early modern Portugal.
To sum up, CIUHCT continues to assert its unique plural and transdisciplinary scientific agenda, reinforcing its dimensions of research, training and connection with civil society, reinforcing its leading position in Europe and strengthening ties with the Lusophone community.
10.3 Summary in English for evaluation
CIUHCT's scientific agenda for 2018-22 aims at strengthening the history and material culture of science, technology and medicine (HSTM) in the national context and at reinforcing CIUHCT's status as a crucial player at the international level. The trilogy circulation, appropriation, innovation guides CIUHCT's main strategic goals which are: 1) to inscribe STM in historical narratives; 2) to increase the international presence and visibility of Portuguese HSTM; 3) to foster transdisciplinary STM approaches; 4) to assess contemporary issues and citizenship through the HSTM lenses. High quality research on Portuguese HSTM will encompass both traditional and recent approaches, all framed in the context of methodological pluralism, spanning periods from the 16th to the 21th century and encompassing Portuguese mainland and empire in a global context.
CIUHCT's objectives are embodied in its on-going flagships: Four Edited volumes on HSTM in Portugal; Dictionary of Biographies of Portuguese STM actors; Bibliographical Guide to HSTM in Portugal; publication and indexation in SCOPUS and WoS of open access e-journal HoST. New collective outputs are geared towards the international community and planned to reinforce CIUHCT's open access and outreach dimensions. They privilege internationalization, training, outreach, open access and digital humanities.
INTERNATIONALIZATION
Besides the organization of two major international meetings, two volumes are proposed: 1) The history and material culture of STM in Portugal. Building on the Edited Volumes, this volume to be published in a reputed international academic press explores the interactions between political regimes, techno-scientific landscapes and shifting modernity(ies) in shaping the STM Portuguese landscape, both in the mainland and in its colonies. It reveals how Portugal has emerged as a player in the STM European arena in clear contrast with the acknowledged cannon; 2) Companion to the history of science from a European perspective. Complementing the Companion to the History of Science (Wiley, 2016) voicing an Anglo-American perspective on HSTM, as well as the scholarly emphasis on non-western contributions, this volume argues that much is still to be known about the plural, diversified and often contradictory ways in which the sciences in Europe were construed in their entangled relations to the world at large.
TRAINING
Additionally to regular training secured by one MSc and two PhD programs and post-doctoral grants, CIUHCT will lead actions aiming at international and national audiences: 1) 2021 Anthropocene Campus. It will follow the established model with 9 transdisciplinary intensive seminar courses, combining theory and practice, and campus' outputs will feed the pedagogical interdisciplinary space Anthropocene Curriculum (HKW, MPIWG); 2) Material Culture Boot Camps. CIUHCT will organize one highly intensive 3-days Boot Camp per year to provide basic training in material culture as a tool to object-based HSTM; 3) 1 Advanced and 3 Short Courses per year to promote awareness in HSTM in Citizen Science, Digital Humanities, Science Communication, Scientific and Natural History Collections or Social Networks Analysis.
OUTREACH
Beyond standard outreach activities organized by CIUHCT, we highlight: 1) STM Knowledge: Made in Portugal. Three 15m documentaries in English to be broadcasted in an international TV channel on the multiple Portuguese STM contributions to world history; 2) Three major Exhibitions: one on the intersection of cartography and early modern science; other on the role of Portuguese medicine in a worldwide context; and the pocket exhibition Anthropocene Cabinet of Curiosities; 3) HSTM Touristic itineraries will be implemented, embracing a growing number of STM iconic areas and institutions of Lisbon; 4) Inclusive Societies. Portugal holds scientific collections collected from the 18th century onwards in (Lusophone) countries that form the basis of present day migrant communities. CIUHCT will promote a series of experimental object-based activities to bridge the gulf between these migrant communities and scientific collections of their countries of origin.
OPEN ACCESS AND DIGITAL HUMANITIES
Subscribing to open and universal access policies, the following projects are underlined: 1) Digital humanities. CIUHCT's flagships will be explored at the interface of digital humanities, outreach and public engagement: The Bibliographical Guide to the History of STM in Portugal will make the full database available through the dedicated website 21st Century Bibliography of Portuguese HSTM, open to users' corrections and new entries; the Dictionary of Biographies will be explored with Digital Humanities storytelling techniques to allow the audience to navigate and connect multiple dimensions of historical actors; 2) STMgram. Database and online site on photography of STM in Portugal and its colonies (1860-1974), using the framework provided by STM landscape studies, and offering a new general overview on STM photography in Portugal; 3) Inquisition in action. Database and online site on the censoring by the Inquisition of scientific books in early modern Portugal connecting information from Indexes of Forbidden Books and hundreds of extant-censored copies, providing images, transcriptions and documentation, and explaining practices of censorship.
To summarize, combining on-going and new outputs CIUHCT will continue to assert its unique plural and transdisciplinary scientific agenda and to excel at the national and international levels by pursuing excellence in research, training and outreach, impacting at the Portuguese social and economic realms, reinforcing its leading position in Europe and strengthening ties with the Lusophone community.
