Abstract

10.2 Summary in English for general dissemination purposes The Business Research Unit (BRU-IUL) is a multidisciplinary research unit whose scope spans various Business areas. Researchers are mainly faculty from the ISCTE Business School (IBS) of the Instituto Universitário de Lisboa (ISCTE-IUL). BRU-IUL has 5 research groups: Accounting, Marketing& Management; Data Analytics; Economics; Finance; Organizational Behavior & Human Resources. The Unit runs 4 accredited doctoral programs, totally taught in English: Management; Economics; Finance and Doctor of Business Administration (DBA). The interweaving aims of BRU-IUL are: i) to develop and further improve sound research in core Business areas that further advances the international scientific literature by increasing the number of FT50, ABS4*, ABS4, Q1 (ISI or Scimago) publications andinternational co-authorships; ii) to provide world-class PhD educational programs able to attract national and international students. BRU-IUL is committed to developing the skills of professionals in the business world - our DBA programme has definitively placed ISCTE-IUL and Portugal on the map of international academia; iii) to engage with society and use our research capacity to answer the needs of managers and companies and thus develop solutions for specific corporate and societal problems. The multidisciplinary research encouraged within BRU-IUL is perceived as a key strength that builds in-house knowledge across several disciplines and leverages the academic programs, as well as corporate and industry relations. The Unit believes its strength lies in its diversity, united by a common goal to improve managerial and policy-level decision-making. For the period 2018-2022, BRU-IUL is highly committed to consolidating and expanding its research activities in line with its key interweaving aims. BRU-IUL wants to keep its position as one of the leading Portuguese research Centres in Business. BRU-IUL's integrated members are highly committed to: conducting and disseminating excellent research; strengthening the path towards internationalization; promoting and enhancing a research environment; reinforcing links with the research community and exploring research complementarities. BRU-IUL also aims to engage with society and contribute to developing solutions for specific corporate and societal problems. Spurring on research in new areas to keep pace with innovation in industry, and transferring knowledge to industry are key challenges faced by BRU-IUL researchers. 10.3 Summary in English for evaluation The Business Research Unit (BRU-IUL) is a multidisciplinary research unit whose scope spans various Business areas. Researchers are mainly faculty from the ISCTE Business School (IBS) of the Instituto Universitário de Lisboa (ISCTE-IUL). Research is funded by FCT core funding, by international and national competitive research grants and by other public and private entities. BRU-IUL currently has the following governing bodies: the International Scientific Advisory Board; the Audit Committee; the Scientific Council; the Scientific Committee and the Group Coordinators' Committee. BRU-IUL has 5 research groups: Accounting, Marketing& Management; Data Analytics; Economics; Finance; Organizational Behavior & Human Resources. The Unit runs 4 accredited doctoral programs, all totally taught in English: Management; Economics; Finance and Doctor of Business Administration (DBA). The interweaving aims of BRU-IUL are: i) to develop and further improve sound research in core Business areas that further advances the international scientific literature by increasing the number of FT50, ABS4*, ABS4, Q1 (ISI or Scimago) publicationsand international co-authorships; ii) to provide world-class PhD educational programs able to attract national and international students. BRU-IUL is committed to developing the skills of professionals in the business world - our DBA programme has definitively placed ISCTE-IUL and Portugal on the map of international academia; iii) to engage with society and use our research capacity to answer the needs of managers and companies, thus developing solutions for specific corporate and societal problems. The following main contributions for the period 2013-2017 deserve special mention: i) quality of the research conducted (reflected in the ten publications that were chosen as the most prominent and representative of the quality and relevance of the Unit's research); ii) merit of the advanced training PhD programmes (over the last 5 years 51 students have finished their PhD and 45 students have completed their DBA, under the supervision of integrated members of BRU-IUL); iii) networking and internationalization (the collaborations gave rise to various co-authored publications, several joint-funded research projects and the organization of prestigious scientific meetings). BRU-IUL Research Seminar Series provides a regular outlet for the formal presentation and intensive discussion of recent research by international high-profile scholars with faculty, researchers and students; iv) societal impact and policy decision making. Researchers are very concerned that knowledge be transferred to the wider community via a permanent effort to diffuse ideas within society. The unit undertakes outreach activities, such as the publication of Social Impact Highlights. The unit also gives frequent interviews in the media and is regularly involved in Ciência Viva activities such as “Semana da ciência e tecnologia”, “Ciência viva no laboratório” and “European Researchers' Night”. These contributions have all been possible due to BRU-IUL integrated members' ability to attract funding of 4973 K€ between 2013-2017. For the period 2018-2022, BRU-IUL is highly committed to consolidating and expanding its research activities in line with its key interweaving aims. BRU-IUL wants to keep its position as one of the leading Portuguese research Centres in Business. To achieve this aim, BRU-IUL intends to promote closer cooperation between team members to take advantage of their different profiles and skills. BRU-IUL's integrated members are highly committed to: conducting and disseminating excellent research; strengthening the path towards internationalization; promoting and enhancing a research environment; reinforcing links with the research community and exploring research complementarities. Publication in ISI or Scimago Quartile 1 ranked journals, as well as ABS 4*, 4 and 3 rated journals will continue to be incentivised. BRU-IUL researchers are encouraged to present their work at the best international conferences and to participate in national and international research networks. The Unit promotes the mobility of its integrated researchers, and the establishment of partnerships with other research centers. Researchers will also be involved in the organization of international conferences and Symposia; the Unit will further invest in the series of BRU-IUL Research Seminars with the participation of leading academics. Given BRU-IUL's aim of providing world class PhD educational programmes, itis crucial that the Unit attract bright Portuguese and foreign PhD students to work full-time on their research projects, and to integrate their PhD work in the research strands of the Unit. BRU-IUL is applying for 10 PhD fellowships per year (from 2019 to 2022). The Unit believes increasing the number of its post-doctoral researchers is critical to its development and requests programmatic funding to hire 5 new PhD researchers to work in close collaboration with integrated members of the team. BRU-IUL also aims to engage with society and contribute to developing solutions for specific corporate and societal problems. Spurring on research in new areas to keep pace with innovation in industry, and transferring knowledge to industry are key challenges faced by BRU-IUL researchers. Hence, there is a need to collaborate with organisations by targeting existing or emerging problems, and to improve their structure and functioning by means of systematic and comprehensive organisational diagnosis and intervention.
