Abstract

10.2 Summary in English for general dissemination purposes The Health Sciences Research Unit: Nursing (UICISA: E) is a research center that is assessed by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology since 2004. It is “hosted” by the Nursing School of Coimbra (ESEnfC) - the main management institution - and is recognized and sought after as an international reference in the area of nursing and allied health sciences. The firm and wiling commitment of UICISA: E has increased the interest of institutions and external researchers to be part of the team for the 2018-2022 period, not only due to its ability to aggregate and empower critical mass, but also to the external recognition of its research activities. The consistent and solid organization of its team is duly regulated in the UICISA: E Statute. The current UICISA: E team consists of researchers from 24 education and clinical institutions (2 of these institutions are also management institutions) from different regions of Portugal: 131 integrated PhD researchers, 38 integrated non-PhD, and 34 collaborators. Through these skills and organization, the UICISA: E team conducts R&D activities at an interdisciplinary and international level to provide a sustainable and socially responsible response to complex problems related to health promotion, disease prevention, and care delivery to sick, disabled, or end-of-life patients.. The team aims to continue opening new paths in R&D through an integrated and consistent action model. Therefore, the team is committed to accomplishing the following operational objectives of UICISA: E for the period of 2018- 2022: 1)To widen theinternationalization activities of the researchers' team. 2)To continue developing relevant training activities aimed at both national and international researchers, from initiation to advanced research, thus promoting the link between research and education. 3)To continue editing 1 scientific journal and monographs, disseminating research outcomes in a citizen-friendly language, and organizing international scientific events. 4)To intensify laboratory activities, namely through applied research and technological innovation in health care. 5)To strengthen the activities of synthesis and implementation of scientific evidence with the purpose of translating scientific evidence into action, thus improving decision-making skills, user satisfaction, and health care cost-effectiveness. 6)To promote relevant scientific, technological, cultural, artistic, social, and economic activities within the society by improving the link between R&D activities and researchers, clinicians, institutions, community, and citizens. With this strategic plan, the UICISA: E team, while developing scientific knowledge in nursing and allied health sciences, aims to contribute to respond to societal health challenges and improve communities' health at a local and global level. 10.3 Summary in English for evaluation The Health Sciences Research Unit: Nursing (UICISA: E) is a research center that is assessed by the Portuguese Foundation for Scienceand Technology since 2004. It is “hosted” by the Nursing School of Coimbra (ESEnfC) - the main management institution - and is recognized and sought after as an international reference in the area of nursing and allied health sciences, which is evident in the internationalization outcomes of the Unit, namely: the involvement in R&D activities in collaboration with international networks; the visits to research centres; the dissemination of research results in international events; and the presentation of the Unit and its products in events, exhibitions, and fairs. The current UICISA: E team consists of researchers from 24 education and clinical institutions (2 of these institutions are also management institutions) from different regions of Portugal: 131 integrated PhD researchers, 38 integrated non-PhD researchers, and 34 collaborators. Through these skills and organization, the UICISA: E team conducts R&D activities at an interdisciplinary and international level to provide a sustainable and socially responsible response to complex problems related to health promotion, disease prevention, and care delivery to sick, disabled, or end-of-life patients. The team aims to continue opening new paths in R&D through an original cross-cutting model of integrated and consistent action. This model is based on three key pillars. First, the 3 research groups (Health Professionals' Development and Health Education; Well-being, Health, and Illness; Health Systems and Organizations), which were individually described in previous evaluations, have been committed to a solidarity-based action. Consequently, although each group (coordinated by a principal investigator) has specific areas of interest, the research action is jointly managed, thus the team operates as a consistent unit by bringing together its sill mix capital. Second, the structuring projects (SP) integrated in UICISA: E focus on R&D activities in the following priority health research topics: Violence in Society and Institutions; Health Education and Literacy; Pain Management; Innovation in Nursing Care Technology; Active ageing; Health Professionals´ Development and Training; Wound Care; Methodologies of Differentiated (Complex) Nursing Care; Patient Safety and Care Effectiveness; and Health Transitions and Self-Care. Finally, the sustained development of the SP is strengthened by a cross-cutting combination of specific measures and specialized techniques and resources, that we named Development Strategic Axes: Optimization of scientific knowledge; Science Synthesis and Implementation; Experimental and applied research in health care technologies; Dissemination of scientific knowledge; Researchers' training; Ethics; Extension and Society engagement; and International collaboration. In this way, supported by the original cross-cutting model, the team is committed to accomplishing the following operational objectives of UICISA: E for 2018- 2022: 1)To widen the internationalization activities of the researchers' team through: visits to national and international research centers of excellence to participate in collaborative R&D activities and use resources and infrastructures relevant to nursing; participation in scientific events to present the results of research projects; and publication, in international collaboration, of papers in high-quality journals, namely in the network of scientific journals of relevant interest to nursing development; strengthen activities with and within relevant international networks for nursing and allied health research to lead, influence health policies, exchange expertise, and seek research funding. 2)To continue developing relevant training activities aimed at both national and international researchers, from initiation to advanced research, thus promoting the link between research and education; to continue performing supervision activities in nursing doctoral programs; to provide research training to clinical practitioners. 3)To continue editing 1 open access scientific journal and monographs; disseminating research outcomes in a citizen-friendly language; and organizing international scientific events. 4)To intensify laboratory activities, namely through applied research and technological innovation in health care (medical devices and technical procedures). 5)To strengthen the activities of synthesis and implementation of scientific evidence with the purpose of translating scientific evidence into action, thus improving decision-making skills, user satisfaction, and health care cost-effectiveness. The training programs, the JBC network, and the UICISA: E ecossystem are essential in this activity. 6)To promote relevant scientific, technological, cultural, artistic, social, and economic activities within the society by improving the link between R&D activities and researchers, clinicians, institutions, community, and citizens; to implement projects with regional impact; to improve citizens' digital health literacy in line with the digital agenda for Europe. With this strategic plan, the UICISA: E team, while developing scientific knowledge in nursing and allied health sciences, aims to contribute to respond to societal health challenges and improve communities' health at a local and global level.
