Abstract

10.2 Summary in English for general dissemination purposes The CLP’s activities plan for 2018-2022 is governed by the current Strategic Plan (https://www.uc.pt/fluc/clp/apr/peclp) and carried out in integrated projects in the CPL’s three research groups. 1. Literary Heritage Group 1.1 “Critical Edition of the Works of Almeida Garrett” (coord. by Ofélia P. Monteiro): preparation of Dona Filipa de Vilhena, Teatro Póstumo, Romanceiro, Frei Luís de Sousa, O Alfageme de Santarém, Mérope and Lírica de João Mínimo. 1.2 “Editions of the Works of Eça de Queirós” (coord. by Carlos Reis): publicação de Lendas de Santos, A Relíquia, Textos de Imprensa II and Philidor. 1.3 “For a Digital Edition of Carlos de Oliveira's Literary Archive” (coord. by Osvaldo M. Silvestre). 1.4 “Literature in the teaching of Portuguese as a foreign language” (coord. de Ana Maria Machado): extensive reading of retextualized tales from the Portuguese literature of the 19th-21st centuries, in the teaching of Portuguese as a foreign language1.5 Knowledge transfer: “Literatura & etc.” (org. by Ana Paula Arnaut), collaboration on outreach initiatives with writers' house-museums. 2. Theory of Literature Group 2.1 “Figures of Fiction”: development of the Dicionário de Personagens da Ficção Portuguesa (DPFP; http://dp.uc.pt/); publication of the research’s results (three volumes). 2.2 “Literature, Imagology and Transnationalism: Representation of Migrations”: meetings for theoretical discussion, participation in scientific meetings, holding of three conferences and a workshop. 2.3. "Mapping Voltaire in Portugal and in Portuguese Literature (18th to 21st centuries)": estabishing a “literary cartography” and a “political cartography”; publication of Cartografias de Voltaire em Portugal e na Literatura Portuguesa. 2.4 "Identity, Crossborder, Gender, and Sex in African and Other Portuguese-Language Literatures": continue research on identity, sexuality, and gender in African literatures. 3. Digital Mediation and Materialities of Literature Group 3.1 "LdoD Archive: Collaborative Digital Archive of the Book of Disquiet" URL: https://ldod.uc.pt/ . The second stage of development aims to expand the platform’s contents and features. 3.2 "Ex Machina: Inscription and Literature" URL: https://www.uc.pt/fluc/clp/inv/proj/meddig/exmach. Publication of two issues of the MATLIT jornal (2018) and the MATLIT Handbook (2018-2020). 3.3 "Vox Media: Sound in Literature" URL: https://www.uc.pt/fluc/clp/inv/proj/meddig/voxmed. Publication of a digital audio-archive and a database of literary recordings in Portugal. 3.4 "ReCodex: Forms and Transformations of the Book" URL: https://www.uc.pt/fluc/clp/inv/proj/meddig/recod. Publication of an issue of the journal MATLIT (2019) on this research topic. 3.5 "Inanimate Alice: Translating Electronic Literature for an Educational Context" URL: https://www.uc.pt/fluc/clp/inv/proj/meddig/iatld. Publication of the Portuguese version of the multimedia work "Inanimate Alice". 10.3 Summary in English for evaluation Activities have been structured within ongoing research projects of our three research groups: A. “Literary Heritage” Group We will continue with our long-term editorial projects; develop two new applied research projects; and promote scientific meetings and outreach initiatives. 1) “Critical Edition of the Works of Almeida Garrett”. Coord. by Ofélia P. Monteiro; volumes in preparation: Dona Filipa de Vilhena Teatro Póstumo Romanceiro Frei Luís de Sousa O Alfageme de Santarém Mérope Lírica de João Mínimo 2) “Critical Edition of the Works of Eça de Queirós”. Coord. by Carlos Reis; four volumes: Lendas de Santos A Relíquia Textos de Imprensa II Philidor The publication schedule is made according to Imprensa Nacional, responsible for printing and distribution (2-3 volumes per year for both collections). 3) "For a digital edition of Carlos de Oliveira's literary archive". Coord. by Osvaldo M. Silvestre. The volume of documents in the writer's estate has been studied by a small team, with a view to publishing them digitally. Facsimiles of each document and its topographic transcription will be made available according to current digital critical editing criteria. 4) "Literature in the Teaching of Portuguese as a Foreign Language". Coord. by Ana Maria Machado. The main purpose of the project is to introduce the extensive reading of retextualised stories (Portuguese literature of the 19th-21st centuries) at an introductory level of teaching Portuguese as a foreign language. The adaptation of the texts (in print and audio formats) will be accompanied by reading comprehension exercises, presented in a digital platform. 5) Knowledge transfer Dissemination of Portuguese Literature to the general public: "Literatura& etc." (org. by Ana Paula Arnaut). Collaboration with Writers' Houses-Museums (Neorealism Museum, Eça de Queiroz Foundation, Casa Fernando Pessoa, Casa de Camilo, and Casa Miguel Torga). Conference on the Portuguese-Spanish author Francisco Vasconcelos (U. Navarra; Torre de Moncorvo). B. “Theory of Literature” Group The "Figures of Fiction", "Literature, Imagology and Transnationalism", and "Identity, Crossborder, Gender, and Sex" projects will be completed; and the"Mapping Voltaire in Portugal" project will be started. 1) “Figures of Fiction”. Coord. by Carlos Reis. a) Development of the "Dictionary of Characters of Portuguese Fiction" - DPFP http://dp.uc.pt/), until the expected number of 200 characters is reached. The DPFP is already available online, in open access. b) Publication of the research’s partial results: papers presented at the 5th International “Figures of Fiction” Conference; presentations given at the conference by keynote speakers; translation and publication of a volume of essays by Marie-Laure Ryan. c) Thematic workshops; 6th International “Figures of Fiction” Conference. Activities are disseminated through the European Narrative Network (http://www.narratology.net/). 2) "Literature, Imagology and Transnationalism: Representation of Migrations". Planned activities: meetings for theoretical discussion; researcher participation in scientific meetings; seminar series with specialist researchers; workshop on "Imagination, identity and spatiality". 3) "Mapping Voltaire in Portugal and in Portuguese Literature (18th to 21st centuries)". Surveying and analyzing Portuguese translations of the French author’s texts and establishing: i) a "literary cartography" that identifies the poetic confluences of those translations with Portuguese literature; (ii) a "political cartography" that emphasizes the relationships between national literature, translated literature and different types of censorship; (iii) an assessment of the historical and cultural place of Voltaire's translations. Workshops are planned in anticipation of the publication of the book resulting from the project. 4) “Identity, Crossborder, Gender, and Sex in African and Other Portuguese-Language Literatures”. This project aims to investigate the literary and cultural identity of authors and texts, continuing research on sexuality and gender in Portuguese-language African literatures. C. “Digital Mediation and Materialities of Literature” Core objectives of the planned activities: to expand a field of research that examines the relations between technologies of inscription and literary meaning; to develop a general theory of mediation, technology, and materiality in literary practices; to establish a comparative media approach in the study of literature; to develop new methods (including digital methods) for the study of literary works; to translate the results of ongoing research into digital archives and other forms of structured databases. The achievement of these objectives is expressed in the following projects: 1) "LdoD Archive: Collaborative Digital Archive of the Book of Disquiet" https://ldod.uc.pt/ a) Expanding the platform’s contents and features by programming a writing module, automatic textual analysis and visualization modules, as well as modules for the Book of Disquiet’s critical reception and translation. b) Workshops with teachers and students exploring the uses of the platform. 2) "Ex Machina: Inscription and Literature" a) Publication of two issues of the journal MATLIT on electronic literature; b) Online publication (on a free-access, bilingual platform – in both Portuguese and English) of the MATLIT Handbook. 3) "Vox Media: Sound in Literature" a) Publication of a digital audio archive and a database with the inventory of literary recordings in Portugal 4) "ReCodex: Forms and Transformations of the Book" a) Publication of an issue of the journal MATLIT on the performativity of the book as a literary machine. 5) "Inanimate Alice: Translating Digital Literature in an Educational Context" a) Publication of the Portuguese version of the "Alice Inanimada" multimedia work, accompanied by pedagogical workshops.
