Abstract

10.2 Summary in English for general dissemination purposes The research developed at CLUNL, in the fields of language acquisition and processing, lexicology, lexicography, terminology, text and grammar analysis, and language and cognition, is based on different theoretical and epistemological frameworks and welcomes and fosters interdisciplinary work. The diversity of research areas covered, the track record shown by researchers, the creation of consortia and partnerships, and the level of internationalization of the unit provide CLUNL with the ability to achieve key objectives, taking into account 4 strategic lines of action: 1) Advancement of knowledge and fundamental research, on:> the nature of human language, focusing on language acquisition and development, language processing and language impairment, including comparative morphosyntactic studies, processing studies to identify universal parsing strategies, and monolingual vs. bilingual acquisition in different social contexts; > the lexicon, vocabularies and terminologies, and their implications for knowledge on language, communication and society, considering lexical semantics, corpus linguistics, metalexicography, sociolexicology and lexico-didactics, and different theoretical and methodological approaches to terminology;> the connection and mutual enhancement of grammatical and text/discourse approaches to language, with focus on verb and verbal paradigms, on the linguistic characterization of social practices of comment/commentary from complementary approaches, and on digital discourse and digital forms of interaction; > language, cognition and communication, focusing on language-in-use analysis of dominant varieties of Portuguese. 2) New areas of knowledge application and response to societal challenges, contributing to: > inclusive societies, with studies on language of migrant and second-generation children from Portuguese-speaking countries, on different types of language impairment and development of methodologies, materials and tools for teaching and assessment of L1&L2, mono and bilingual dictionaries, and grammars; > reflexive societies, with studies on language practices of comment/commentary in a multi-faceted approach, and studies of digital forms of interaction in social media. > innovative societies, with research on computational lexicons and on knowledge-based applications, automatic detection of language errors, terminological and ontological knowledge. 3) Advanced training and scientific initiation of students and recruitment of young researchers, based on a competitive research program, a stimulating environment and a flexiblehiring policy including scientific employment contracts and Research and PostDoc grants. All these strategies promote high quality training contributing to the goals of UNESCO 2030. 4) Dissemination and transfer of knowledge and resources, by continuing its internationalization, dissemination, networking and knowledge transfer policies and activities 10.3 Summary in English for evaluation The research developed at CLUNL - language acquisition and processing, lexicology, lexicography, terminology, text and grammar analysis, and language and cognition - is based on different theoretical and epistemological frameworks, fostering interdisciplinary work. The diversity of research areas covered, the track record showed by the unit researchers, the creation of consortia and partnerships, and the level of internationalization of the unit provide CLUNL with the ability to achieve key objectives, taking into account 4 strategic lines of action: 1) Advancement of KnOwledge and fundamental REsearch (KORE); 2) new areas of Knowledge Application and REsponse to societal challenges (KARE); 3) Advanced TRAining and scientific initiation of students and reCruitmenT of young researchers (ATRACT); and 4) disSEmination and transfer of knowlEDge and resources (SEED). 1) Reflecting CLUNL's research in 4 main areas, KORE focuses on:> the study of the nature of human language, considering language acquisition, language development, language processing and language impairment, including comparative morphosyntactic studies, processing studies to identify universal parsing strategies and how syntactic processing is influenced by grammatical features, and monolingual vs. bilingual acquisition in different social contexts (comprising phonological and syntactic aspects); > the study of the lexicon, vocabularies and terminologies, and their implications for knowledge of language, communication and society, considering (computational) lexical semantics, corpus linguistics, metalexicography, sociolexicology and also lexico-didactics, and different theoretical and methodological approaches to terminology;> the study of the connection and mutual enhancement of grammatical and text/discourse approaches to language, with a focus on the verb and on verbal paradigms, on the characterization of social practices of comment/commentary from multi-complementary approaches, and on digital discourse and the study of digital forms of interaction; > the study of language, cognition and communication, focusing on language-in-use analysis of dominant varieties of Portuguese. 2) Concerning KARE, CLUNL will pursue strategic research to respond to societal challenges such as> inclusive societies, through i) studies on language of migrant and second-generation children from Portuguese-speaking countries (diagnosis of phonological, morphosyntactic and discourse abilities), contributing to their inclusion, ii) studies on language impairment of populations with specific features (autism, hearing impairment and specific language impairments), iii) the development of methodologies, materials and tools for teaching and assessment of L1, L2, along with the development of knowledge and tools for the creation of specific and innovative resources, such as monolingual and bilingual dictionaries and grammars for Language Specific Purposes;> reflexive societies, through iv) studies from textual corpora on language practices of comment/commentary in a multi-faceted approach to understand the role of this practice in (social media) society, v) studies of digital forms of interaction in social media and the web. > innovative societies, through vi) research on computational lexicons and on knowledge-based applications (art and medical communication), vii) automatic detection of language errors and language assessment for transformingservices, viii) terminological and ontological knowledge to support the management of specialized content for industrial and commercial purposes, to allow for adjustments to the training systems and human resources' management in industry and public administration, and to facilitate communication between professionals and scientific agents. 3) Continuing the unit's strategy in the past years, ATRACT aims at integrating and training young researchers, by contributing to a flexible hiring policy including scientific employment contracts and Research and PostDoc grants, and by promoting a competitive PhD research program (according to the diversity of areas developed in CLUNL) and a stimulating environment for young researchers (Summer School, Young Researchers Group, Workshop Picking Brains, Crossing ideas). All these strategies will promote a high quality training, contributing to the goals of UNESCO 2030. 4) CLUNL's research carried out in KORE and KARE lines of action sustains SEED activities, namely participation in international networks, organization of numerous international conferences in NOVA FCSH; organization of training actions for specific audiences (translators, reviewers, primary and secondary school teachers, science managers, cultural actors); as well as the dissemination and facilitation of access to new digital resources or the updating of existing resources (cf. online corpus; BILP; Dictionary of Medieval Portuguese, corpus of L2 learners). CLUNL will reinforce the visibility of research results, giving priority to publication in open access in reference circuits, and will continue to participate in open access projects, namely the NOVA Institutional Repository that stores, preserves and gives access, in compliance with the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Re-usable) and Open Science guidelines, to the university's intellectual production, and will edit a new electronic open access journal. CLUNL's overall objectives concern the production of relevant and innovative knowledge, addressing societal challenges (DS1, DS6), open science and industry 4.0 (H2020), the contribution to scientific employment, and the integration and training of young researchers in a stimulating environment, preparing them to contribute to the current sustainable development agenda (good health and well-being; quality education; gender equality; industry, innovation and infrastructures; reduced inequalities; peace, justice and strong institutions (UNESCO, 2030).
