Abstract

10.2 Summary in English for general dissemination purposes Our Strategic Focus will be on Geo-Resources/Geo-Environment, working actively with some of the most important national mining projects and taking advantage of our skills and resources. We must be fully committed to the new trends of research and exploitation of raw materials: Sustainable exploitation; Remining; Reuse; Recycling, putting particular emphasis on development of new materials and/or new applications for old materials; Medical Geology (Bio and Geo availability, Dust mineralogy and geochemistry, Healing minerals, Waste Waters), Radiogenic Isotope Geology (isotope signature/provenience) new Georesources and Geomaterials (Geopolymers, Marine Resources, Secondary Raw Materials), Soil Sciences (Mineral improved food production), Environmental Geophysics and Geochemistry (risk assessment, climatic changes) and Geotourism and Geoheritage. The research will cover the life cycle of primary raw materials: the fundamental geological (regional and local) knowledge; the availability of minerals; prospection and recognition; study of potential environmental impacts; exploitation of mineral deposits; treatment and beneficiation, processing; the disposal, treatment and recycling of mineral wastes; decommissioning, closure and abandonment; geo-environmental technologies and still on any supporting science or technology such as geodynamics, basin analysis, rock mechanics, geophysics, geochemistry and geostatistics. Research on bioaccessibility, accumulation of PAHs in soils and dusts, bioindication and phytomining, monitoring and bioremediation. Research on Isotope Geology focused on Rb-Sr and Sm-Nd systems, for: geochronology; geochemistry of igneous processes; characterization of alteration and metasomatic events; provenance studies: sediments, dust, beverages, foods, archaeological remains, etc. Basic and Applied research will be carried on Meso-Cenozoic basins, with economic potential, allowing key studies to unravel the evolution of life, climate changes and global changes. Agro-forestry research on: Biofortification of food in the plant stage: wheat in Fe and Zn, rice in Se, tomato in Mg, Fe and Zn, potato in Ca and grapes in Zn; Biological control in fruits from orchards; Phytoremediation: Ex. Eucalyptus spp (growing in heavy-metal contaminated media); Interaction of climate changes (temperature and CO2) in plants. On Marine Geology, we will improve our efforts on sedimentological, geochemical (inc. Isotopes), mineralogical and micropaleontological studies to characterize deposits and to assess paleocirculation, productivity and pollution. Other research activities on: Environmental risk assessment, Restoration/rehabilitation of built heritage; Traditional Earth Construction (such as adobe) and Traditional Mortars; petrological, structural and metallogenic studies in Iberian Variscan basement; magmatism, metamorphism and geodynamic evolution of Brazil and Iran crustal provinces; Mineralogy and chemistry of Martian samples and their analogs. 10.3 Summary in English for evaluation Our Strategic Focus will be on Geo-Resources/Geo-Environment, working actively with some of the most important national mining projects and taking advantage of our skills and resources on industrial minerals, geostatistics, geochemistry, geophysics, mineralogy, medical geology and geomaterials and strengthens geological basic disciplines such as sedimentology, stratigraphy, structural geology, petrology, isotope geology. The research will cover the life cycle of primary raw materials: fundamental geological (regional and local) knowledge; availability of minerals; prospection and recognition; study of potential environmental impacts; exploitation of mineral deposits; treatment, beneficiation, processing; disposal, treatment and recycling of mineral wastes; decommissioning, closure and abandonment; geo-environmental technologies and supporting tools such as geodynamics, basin analysis, rock mechanics, geophysics, geochemistry and geostatistics. Aiming: increased knowledge of the national potential, with preliminary identification of exploitable resources, fostering a mining view; pilot projects of treatment of minerals complementary to the main extraction; development of new methodologies for resource assessment and new uses; conservation of resources and guarantee of supply of raw materials; demarcation of areas of geological interest and respective geological characterization; disclosure of mineral resources as non-renewable natural resources, placing them in the context of national natural heritage that must be known, preserved and enhanced; support for new activities geared to build in situ resources; demarcation of areas for future exploration. We will increase our cooperation with Industry, strengthening its capacity of producing and giving support for the introduction of new techniques/technologies and for the development of new products, such as new applications for low grade Industrial Minerals as well as for blendings with incorporation of Mining wastes. Particular efforts will be carried on the development of the research focused on Geopolymers, namely on the optimization of the blendings formulations and protocols, either for construction materials or for adsorvents/filters; special attention will be put on the production of geopolymers at room temperature, which will reduce heavily energy costs, and, taking into account that they can replace (at least partially) mortars and concrete, thus reducing the carbon emission and the ecological impact. This main line heavily focused on Mineral Resources will be complemented by others, designed and implemented in a way assuring interactivity and sharing human and material (laboratorial) resources. Research on bioaccessibility (within the international BARGE group) will be focused in the development of methodologies to assess human bioaccessibility (inc. an inter-laboratory trial to validate a method to estimate the oral bioaccessibility of PAHs in the solid-phase). The accumulation of PAHs in soils and dusts will be also developed as well as the geochemistry of sediment core (as geochemical records of environmental changes). Indoor environment is now included in the research carried out in urban sites. Particular attention will also be focused on Bioindication and Phytomining, Monitoring and Bioremediation. Research on Isotope Geology focused on Rb-Sr and Sm-Nd systems, for: geochronology; geochemistry of igneous processes; characterization of alteration and metasomatic events; provenance studies (in a wide range of geological and non-geological materials): sediments, dust, beverages, foods, archaeological remains, etc. Basic and Applied research will be carried on Meso-Cenozoic basins, with important potential for economic exploration of hydrocarbons and a particular position linking the Atlantic and the Tethyan and Mediterranean Seas, allowing key studies to unravel the evolution of past living organisms, climate changes and global changes. Isotopes), mineralogical and micropaleontological studies on bottom sediments and on suspension particulate material to characterize deposits and to assess paleocirculation, productivity and pollution. The same concerning Medical Geology and Urban Geochemistry, with special focus on Atmospheric, Industrial and Urban Dust. Finally, we will continue our research activities on: Environmental risk assessment, Restoration and rehabilitation of built heritage, using geophysical, (bio)geochemical and mineralogical approaches; Studies on Traditional Earth Construction (such as adobe) and Traditional Mortars, to improve conservation and rehabilitation; petrological, structural and metallogenic studies in the Iberian Variscan basement; magmatism, metamorphism and geodynamic evolution of crustal provinces of Brazil and Iran; Mineralogy and chemistry of Martian samples and their analogs.
