Abstract

10.2 Summary in English for general dissemination purposes Centro de Estudos Arnaldo Araújo (CEAA) is a R&D unit based at Escola Superior Artística do Porto which develops research in the domain of Art Studies, specifically in the territories of Theory, Criticism and History. The research unit is focused on the study and dissemination of scientific contents produced in the areas of architecture, arts, film, video, photography and theatre. Grounded on a long and well-established interdisciplinary approach that remained in the history of the host institution itself, such approach is expressed in theorganization of the CEAAs future activities and work. Therefore, it is grounded on 3 Research Groups - ARCHITECTURAL STUDIES (G1), FILM STUDIES (G2), and ART AND CRITICAL STUDIES (G3) -, all of them guided by scientific patterns of quality. The research work of each RG is structured on thematic axes: (G1) Architecture, Territory, Landscape; Strong Relations; Dramatic Architectures; (G2) Portuguese Cinema; Space in Cinema; History of Cinema; (G3) Europe; Film in Contemporary Art; Trajectories South-South. Although confining a particular field of knowledge, based on theories, practices and specific methods, the work of each RG is developed in close cooperation and interconnection with the other groups, as well as in strong articulation with other institutional structures - institutes, universities, municipalities, cultural entities - performed at local, national and international levels. A research line called COMMON PLACE will function as a platform to promote the development of shared knowledge and crossed perspectives. The CEAA intends to contribute to the scientific and civil communities with relevant work, defining its priorities also in accordance with the expectations and necessities identified by the European Union in terms of scientific, social and cultural patterns. First, it is driving its research activity under a transnational perspective expressed in the research projects already undertaken - such as the HERA project MODSCAPES (HERA.15.097) - or under construction, in the participation and construction of new scientific networks, as well as in the celebration of protocols and consortiums with European, African and Latin American research institutions. Second, the CEAA intends to reinforce the interplay between the scientific structures and the civil society, enabling the participation of the citizen and non-academic entities (as cultural institutions, municipalities, museums), and stimulating innovative work able to contribute to the sustainability of research work. Third, it intends to acquire new digital competences and to stimulate the definition of open-access platforms in which the research data generated by publically funded research could be consulted and widely disseminated. 10.3 Summary in English for evaluation Centro de Estudos Arnaldo Araújo (CEAA) is a R&D unit based at Escola Superior Artística do Porto which develops research in the domain of Art Studies, specifically in the territories of Theory, Criticism and History. The research unit is focused on the study, training and dissemination of scientific contents produced in the areas of architecture, arts, film, video, photography and theatre. The successful experience of CEAA research projects at national and international levels, the long and well-established interdisciplinary approach, therelevance and the high-quality of the work produced (as assessed), and the applicability of the research, as practiced over the last 5 years, was taken up as a good framework to be followed. Thus, CEAA will keep the organization of its activity into 3 Research Groups [RG]: [G1] Architectural Studies; [G2] Film Studies; and [G3] Art and Critical Studies, to which was added Common Place research line. The research work of each RG is grounded on 3 axis that, without being exclusive, are considered as thematic priorities: [G1] Architecture, Territory, Landscape; Strong Relations; Dramatic Architectures; [G2] Portuguese Cinema; Space in Cinema; History of Cinema; [G3] Europe; Film in Contemporary Art; Trajectories South-South. While organized under distinct domains, based on specific disciplinary traditions and methods, the RGs foster interaction and collaboration between them. Under the umbrella of Common Place line, researchers from the several groups will work together, thus creating new synergies and extending the fruitful dialogue between different epistemic cultures (architecture, visual arts, film and theatre). The regular organization of Terreiros da Crítica [Yards of Criticism] will ensure the internal circulation of information, interaction among all team members, as well as the process of fine tuning directions and continual replacing of proposals. The CEAA intends to contribute to the scientific and civil communities with relevant work, defining its priorities also in accordance with the expectations and necessities identified by the European Union in terms of scientific, social and cultural patterns. First, it will drive its research activity under a transnational perspective. The ongoing project MODSCAPES (HERA.15.097), the preparation of a new HERA coordinated by Bologna University (already submitted), and the active participation in the construction of an international thematic network that explores digital competencies in the field of architectural criticism (in course), are very expressive indicators. In the same direction, internationalization of the research curatorship, the increase of collaboration agreements and the celebration of protocols and consortiums with European, African and Latin American research institutions are some of the goals of 2018-2022 program. Second, the CEAA intends to reinforce the interplay between the scientific structures and the civil society, enabling the participation of the citizen and non-academic entities, and stimulating innovative work able to contribute to the sustainability of research work. Thus, the unit will continue to invest in collaboration with municipalities, museums and cultural structures, as well as to maintain and improve the educational services associated with its activities. Third, it intends to acquire new digital competences and to stimulate the definition of open-access platforms in which the information, data and contents generated from publically funded research projects and other work can be preserved and widely disseminated. Fourth, a strong effort will be put on the publication of the research results in indexed and open access journals. At the same time, it will continue its editorial policy, making its print production available through free distribution by libraries and researchers, and providing simultaneous online access in the RCAAP open repository and the unit webpage. Fifth, CEAA will strongly focus on the negotiation of protocols with national and international universities in order to associate the unit with doctoral programs, as a host institution for PhD candidates. At the same time, it will continue to host visiting doctoral students for research stays. Sixth, an investment will be made to rejuvenate the team through the hiring of PhD researchers, and the integration of young research fellows in the projects, besides the improvement of work conditions to become more attractive to PhD researchers, as already began to happen. In the same direction, CEAA will also continue its policy of hosting research internships of first and second cycle students. Seventh, the reinforcement of the collaboration with other Portuguese research units, in order to carrying out joint projects and activities, will allow CEAA to gather synergies and critical mass Finally, CEAA will reinforce its participation in international conferences as a vehicle for disseminating results, mainly in a perspective of debating research, carried out in the same field, within its peers, and also to spread its national and international network. In parallel CEAA will continue to organize international conferences within the framework of the ongoing projects.
