Abstract
10.2 Summary in English for general dissemination purposes
CIDESD is a research consortium of ten higher education institutions with the mission of developing human resources, capable of handling autonomous interventions under the domains of sports sciences, health, and human development. This mission is integrated into the Sustainable Development Goals described in the 2030 United Nations agenda: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages. The CIDESD reports described a funding of 11.6M€ for 2008-2017, has more than 500 publications and more than 80 doctoral theses. Each of the three communities has the following goals.
CreativeLab goals will develop (1) performance analysis, aiming to deliver a web-based platform were sports positional data can be uploaded and analysed according to customized compound variables and allowing to obtain real-time reports using advanced data visualization methods; (2) Skills4genius, embraces the challenge of being applied in college students, in order to reveal if creative behaviour declines suffered by classical educational approaches can be later reverted and creativity regained and (3) Talentódromo, continuing to support the talent development research using advanced technology, but is already being extended to address the relative age effect and child obesity. The programs will have the support of SportTech Lab.
STRONG community aims to: (1) develop models to predict sports performance that is underpinned by dynamic systems theory, complex systems and non-linear parameters; (2) select numerical simulations and analytical procedures for the assessment of technique details of a human movement; (3) design, develop and validate sports equipment; (4) develop performance and training evaluation tools to assess the response to training in different sports.
GERON will explore the interaction between physical activity and health across the lifespan with particular emphasis on aging and chronic diseases. The work will be focused on: ExTra4Health (active and healthy aging), chronic kidney disease (NephroCare Portugal SA, intradialytic exercise), cardiovascular diseases (EnRIcH - exercise and resistant hypertension and Passus - exercise for patients with the peripheral arterial disease) and depression (Happy Brain - exercise for patients with depression). Integration of technology for prescription (apps or web-based platforms) and training monitoring (wearable sensors or smart clothing) is also a focus, aiming to allow remote monitoring of home-based exercise and assessing the validity of non-invasive biomarkers of the acute exercise-induced alterations (saliva or sweat), that can be incorporated into wearable sensors or smart clothing.
CIDESD publishes regular newsletters describing how recent studies can be transferred to practice. Other very important immediate dissemination is made throughout social networks (Facebook, Tweeter). CIDESD TV (Meo Kanal 698820) transmits videos that disseminate publication results and science-based practices.
10.3 Summary in English for evaluation
CIDESD is a research consortium of ten higher education institutions, currently with 65 Ph.D. integrated members, 20 non-Ph.D. integrated members, and 31 collaborators. This research unit has the mission of developing human resources, capable of handling autonomous interventions under the domains of sports sciences, health, and human development. This mission is integrated into the Sustainable Development Goals described in the 2030 United Nations agenda: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages. The World Health Organization has also included a strong focus on “healthy aging” into the new draft work program. The CIDESD reports described a funding of 11.6M€ for 2008-2017, has more than 500 publications and more than 80 doctoral theses. Each of the three communities has the following goals.
(A) CreativeLab, is developing the following programs (1) performance analysis, aiming to deliver a web-based platform were positional data can be uploaded and analysed according to customized compound variables and allowing to obtain real-time reports using advanced data visualization methods; (2) Skills4genius, embraces the challenge of being applied in college students from eight CIDESD institutions, in order to reveal if creative behaviour declines suffered by classical educational approaches can be later reverted and creativity regained and (3) Talentódromo, continuing to support the talent development research using advanced technology, but is already being extended to address new educational problems such as the relative age effect and child obesity. These programs will continue to reinforce the collaborations with sports federations, clubs, City Halls and governmental entities. The three programs will be carried with the support of SportTech Lab, in a way to capture, transform multi-dimensional big data into smart data and perform a more informed decision making.
(B) STRONG, aiming to: (1) develop models to predict sports performance that is underpinned by dynamic systems theory, complex systems and non-linear parameters; (2) select numerical simulations and analytical procedures for the assessment of technique details of a human movement; (3) design, develop and validate sports equipment, gear and apparatus and, to evaluate and test equipment and protocols; (4) developing specific performance and training evaluation tools to assess the response to training in different sports. The monitoring of exercise programmes, in close connection to the health industry, must play an important role in this research group and is included under the 2030 agenda. The goals set allow to establish bridges with the health and sport industry to providing services as consultants and sports analysts of elite athletes; to set partnerships with leading companies in the sports industry and; to produce social work together with other exercise and health companies and services.?
(C) GERON, aiming to explore the interaction between physical activity and health across the lifespan with particular emphasis on aging and chronic diseases. The work will be particularly focused on the programs: ExTra4Health - exercise training program for active and healthy ageing, NephroCare Portugal SA intradialytic exercise program, EnRIcH - the role of exercise training in the treatment of resistant hypertension, Passus - exercise training for patients with peripheral arterial disease, and Happy Brain - exercise for patients with depression. Within these, we will: (1) explore the effects of exercise on skeletal muscle metabolism, bone metabolism, inflammation, oxidative stress, endothelial function, DNA damage and neuroplasticity; and (2) develop new technologies for personalised exercise prescription (e.g. apps or other web-based platforms) and exercise training monitoring (e.g. wearable sensors or smart clothing), in particular, web-based platforms that allow remote monitoring of home-based exercise interventions and assess the validity of non-invasive biomarkers of the acute exercise-induced alterations (e.g. in saliva or sweat) that can then be incorporated into wearable sensors or smart clothing.
Aligned with the 2030 agenda for sustainable development CIDESD is committed to promote physical and mental health and well-being for all and to contribute to reducing the burden of chronic diseases through prevention and treatment. The centre will continue to participate in the Director General of Health Priority Program for the Promotion of Physical Activity (DGS-PNPAF) and in the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing (EIP-AHA), as well as collaborations with key institutions such as the NIHR-Leicester Biomedical Research Centre (UK), the National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine (UK), the Department of Health Sciences and the NIH-National Institute on Ageing (US). CIDESD is currently engaged in the summer university entitled Geoparks, Sustainable Regional Development and Healthy Lifestyles (UNESCO recognized Chair, https://unescochairutad.wordpress.com).
CIDESD publishes regular newsletters describing how recent studies can be transferred to practice. Other very important immediate dissemination is made throughout social networks (Facebook, Twitter). CIDESD TV (Meo Kanal 698820) transmits videos that disseminate publication results and science-based practices.
