Abstract

10.2 Summary in English for general dissemination purposes For the 2018-22 phase, CITCEM has adopted the umbrella theme of ‘Migration and Permeability’, a research focus which comprises broad concepts of socio-cultural, political, economic, environmental and technological movement and change, duly emphasising notions of transnationality, syncretism and transition. Emerging research questions will be approached in a complementary manner by the Unit’s eight research groups and five research lines. The implementation of CITCEM’s strategy and associated research focus is anchored on specific joint goals, intent on facilitating conceptual, theoretical, and methodological knowledge transfer into society. A firm priority will be the development of digital, creative research arenas within the humanities, social sciencesand heritage via multidisciplinary observatories, labs and networks planned for 2018-22. The aim is to widen access to science, culture and heritage via innovative digital resources and technological solutions which become interface platforms between students, researchers and entrepreneurs, whilst simultaneously engaging local communities. CITCEM aims to embrace a dynamic approach to internationalisation, focusing on generating more linguistically diverse publications and other outputs, and seeking a wider engagement with international institutions, projects, networks and experts. Planned conferences, colloquia and seminars are international and multidisciplinary in nature. The expansion of international advanced training will continue to be one of CITCEM’s main drivers, with a focus on student and lecturer mobility programmes, and inter-group and external collaboration in doctoral and post-doctoral training, with the participation of invited international experts, and internships outside Portugal. CITCEM also plans to increase its infrastructure for student scientific initiation, particularly through further postgraduate interdisciplinary fellowships enabling the hiring of five postdoctoral researchers who can participate in the process. CITCEM prizes its national and international institutional partnerships with other R&D units, with over twenty ongoing or planned collaborations. The pursuit of these and other goals planned for 2018-22, harnessed through CITCEM’s thematic research priority of ‘Migration and Permeability’, places the Unit in a privileged position to continue providing relevant research contributions, pushing the boundaries of discussion and providing multidisciplinary, state-of-the-art research outputs which can be integrated into tourism, cultural, creative, scientific and technological industries. This articulation will guarantee CITCEM’s sustainable impact and the achievement of its key goal of promoting public understanding of local history, heritage, culture and memory in a global context. 10.3 Summary in English for evaluation The 2018-2022 period will inaugurate CITCEM’s renewed structure, which consists in the reorganisation of its over 380 researchers following the renaming, restructuring and expansion of four initial groups and four research lines. The four groups were renamed and subdivided into seven, and the inclusion of a new group took place. This process resulted into a current even structure of eight groups and five research lines. The eight groups are: ‘Territory and Landscape’ (‘Territórios e Paisagens’); ‘Population and Health’ (‘Populações e Saúde’); ‘Trading Value’ (‘Valores em Transação); ‘Religious Practices and Sociabilities’ (‘Sociabilidades e Práticas Religiosas’); ‘Glocal Representations’ (‘Representações Locais e Globais’); ‘Tangible and Intangible Heritage’ (‘Património Material e Imaterial’); ‘Education and Societal Challenges’ (‘Educação e Desafios Societais’) and ‘Digital Culture’ (‘Cultura Digital’). This group renaming and restructuring does not detract from CITCEM’s previous main inter- and multidisciplinary research foci, with the added strand brought in by ‘Digital Culture’. As for the five current research lines, these are entitled ‘Otherness Within’ (‘Alteridade em Nós’); ‘Shared Territories’ (Territórios Partilhados’); ‘Environmental Change’ (‘Transformações Ambientais’); ‘Shifting Transitions’ (‘Transições em Mudança’) and ‘Global Exchanges’ (‘Fluxos Globais’). It is worth noting that the topics suggested for each research line are not exclusive and allow scope to approach further relevant standpoints. In addition, the participation of multiple research groups in each research line will be broad and inclusive, enabling interconnected research collaborations. Fuller explanations on research group and research lines are provided elsewhere in the course of this application. As a dynamic partner in this dialogue, the Centre is committed to offering vital, interdisciplinary and trans-national contributions from the humanities and social sciences into finding positive responses to the region’s present and future challenges, in close alignment with the priorities of the Science with and for Society H2020 Work program 2018-2020. Concepts like “Glocality” and “Permeability” reflect the Centre’s current scope of intervention. This approach will guarantee CITCEM’s sustainable impact and the achievement of its key goal of promoting public multidimensional understanding and awareness of territory, culture, literature, history, heritage, and memory, at the local and regional levels, whilst combining it with global perspectives and new technologies.
