Abstract

10.2 Summary in English for general dissemination purposes UIDEF, based at the Instituto de Educação, is the organizational structure for research in education of Universidade de Lisboa. Its overriding purpose is to yield a multidimensional understanding of educational organizations, processes and actors, diagnosing problems and needs, and to provide relevant inputs for a knowledge-based transformation of education systems and practices. The Unit aims to publish results, to inform and impact public policy, to support and collaborate with practitioners and decision makers. Research within UIDEF for 2018-2022 is organized in three Research Groups in close relationship to the PhD programs offered at Instituto de Educação: i) Policies of Education and Training, ii) Curriculum, Teacher Education and Technology, and iii) Didactics. This disciplinary-based organization combines with two thematic-based strands: 1) Education XXI, addressing the diversification, modernization and improvement of education; and 2) Change Forces, addressing the processes of change in education, focusing on the coordination, steering and monitoring of change in education systems. UIDEF will develop its internationalization, advanced training, scientific induction of young students, transfer of knowledge, and promotion of scientific culture. The main features of these activities include: . Internationalization. Participating in candidatures to research projects with H2020, FP8 or Erasmus+ funding in partnership with teams from other countries, as well as participation in COST networks. . Advanced training. Maintaining its close relationship with doctoral programs of IE-ULisboa, promoting the participation of doctoral students in funded research projects. . Young students’ scientific induction. Deepening the opportunities for involvement of undergraduate and Masters’ degree students in research projects. . Organization of conferences. Developing a program of international and national conferences in wide ranging as well as on specialized educational issues. . Transfer of knowledge. Carrying out teacher training activities in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, Teacher Education Centers and Schools. . Dissemination of data and results. Stimulating its members to publish research results in recognized scientific journals and in national and international congresses. . Promotion of Scientific Culture. Continuing the development of the Masters program on scientific culture and dissemination of science and the development of Virtual Museum of Education. . Actions of Special Relevance for Society. Continuing its close collaboration with the Ministry of Education, as well as its collaboration with schools, municipalities and other institutions. . Partnerships. Maintaining the cooperation with other research units in Education, preparing a proposal for a FCT Collaborative Laboratory on Technology Enhanced Learning and Distance Education, and maintaining collaboration with other faculties regarding doctoral and Masters programs. 10.3 Summary in English for evaluation UIDEF, based at the Instituto de Educação, is the organizational structure for research in education of Universidade de Lisboa and includes a significant number of members from other higher-education schools. The overriding purpose of the research is to yield a multidimensional understanding of educational organizations, processes and actors, diagnosing problems and needs, and to provide relevant inputs for a knowledge-based transformation of education systems and practices. It aims to publish its results in well-recognized international and national peer review journals and in other relevant scientific publications, to inform and impact public policy, to support and collaborate with practitioners and decision makers, to develop the research competence of its members and train new generations of researchers. The main focus of research for the period 2013-2017 includes two themes, Education XXI and Change Forces. Major advances expected on Education XXI theme: 1. Identification, analysis and promotion of practices of inclusion and equity in formal and non-formal educational contexts, including higher education contexts, youngsters and unschooled adults, in order to cope with increasing diversity and technological development of current societies. 2. Study desirable and relevant literacies, for the Portuguese context, namely in mathematics, science, and physical education, especially regarding sensitive and at risk student groups, taking into account genre, sociocultural origin, and involvement in school, and design of intervention strategies in order to support curriculum development and teacher education. 3. Innovation and improvement of teaching and training practices using technology enhanced learning with emerging digital technologies (such as augmented reality, data analytics, forms of narrative storytelling, taking advantage of mobile learning) and understanding its impact on learners, learning, teachers and teaching in order to contribute to wider adoption in schools. Major advances expected on Change Forces theme: 1. Expansion of the empirical-based analysis of the role, scope and depth of international large scale assessments effects in education governance, focusing on the relations between public policies and the evolution of Portuguese students’ performance in PISA, and on the mobilization and translation of PISA data into “knowledge for policy” by state and non-state actors. 2. Provision of public authorities on a regular basis with data, analysis and evaluations on processes, effects, best-practices, and governance patterns of national policies and programs, specifically on major challenges of Portuguese education such as: reduction of early school leaving; promotion of adult education; development of school autonomy and accountability. 3. Development of new models for teacher education (in-service and pre-service) for promoting literacy, inclusion, citizenship participation and empowerment combining practice-based, collaborative and technology enriched training frameworks. UIDEF will take measures to develop its internationalization, advanced training, scientific induction of young students, transfer of knowledge, and promotion of scientific culture: Internationalization. Participating in candidatures to research projects with H2020, FP8 or Erasmus+ funding in partnership with teams from other countries, as well as participation in COST networks, reinforcing the participation of researchers in international congresses, promoting the exchange of scholars, and reinforce its work with international post doc and doctoral students. Advanced training. UIDEF will maintain its close relationship with doctoral programs of IE-ULisboa, promoting the participation of doctoral students in funded research projects. Young students’ scientific induction. UIDEF will deepen the opportunities for involvement of undergraduate and Masters’ degree students in research projects and support bachelors and Masters’ courses on research methods in education. Organization of conferences. UIDEF will develop a program of international and national conferences in wide ranging as well as on specialized educational issues. In addition, it will also organize national and local meetings targeted to scientific and professional audiences. Transfer of knowledge. This will be carried out through teacher training activities carried out in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, Teacher Education Centers and Schools as well as through consultancy and collaboration in projects carried out by the government, local agencies and social organizations as well as by private companies. Dissemination of data and results. Stimulating its members to publish research results in recognized scientific journals and in national and international congresses, and supporting the translation and copy editing and will continue the development of its open access policies. Promotion of Scientific Culture. UIDEF will continue the development of the Masters program on scientific culture and dissemination of science and well as the development of Virtual Museum of Education, and participate in other initiatives. Actions of Special Relevance for Society. Continuing its close collaboration with the Ministry of Education regarding the development and assessment of educational policies and of national curriculum and teacher education projects, as well as its collaboration with schools, municipalities and other institutions. Partnerships. UIDEF will maintain the cooperation with other research units in Education. With other partners, it is preparing a proposal for a FCT Collaborative Laboratory on Technology Enhanced Learning and Distance Education. It will also maintain collaboration with other faculties regarding doctoral and Masters programs and participate in the College F3 (Food, Farming, and Forestry) of ULisboa. It will develop its relationships with the Ministry of Education and other educational organizations.
