Abstract
10.2 Summary in English for general dissemination purposes
CiiEM (Egas Moniz Interdisciplinary Research Centre) is the Centre for interdisciplinary and translational research and innovation of Egas Moniz. It is closely integrated with the community through Egas Moniz teaching, services and support activity. The Centre aims to develop the scope and quality of its activity through the following programme over the next 5 years:
1. Consolidating the ongoing organization of the Research Centre
The existing functional structures of CiiEM will be monitored, tuned and provided with the resources for smooth functioning. CiiEM will create an editorial committee to take care of publications related to internal communication and with outside society.
2. Taking full advantage of the operation of its research areas to boost project applications and qualitative and quantitative scientific output
The research areas provide a paradigm to address the main research topics within CiiEM and network the laboratories into complex projects. This will lead to more projects and publications, as well as improving the quality of the research, as it becomes more visible and accessible to discussion. The research areas also ensure that strengths are optimised, which will lead to an improved use of resources.
3. Enhancing external cooperation and participation in national and international scientific networks
The CiiEM Board of Directors, Heads of the Research Areas and Laboratories and individual researchers are increasingly active in the wider scientific community to empower and enhance their research. Initiatives for international contacts and cooperation have met with successful results and will continue to be strongly encouraged and further developed.
4. Extending the involvement of CiiEM in post graduate teaching activities (PhD)
With the onset of the Egas Moniz PhD programme, the CiiEM researchers and infrastructures will host more PhD students and participate in their orientation, extending and upgrading the work currently being carried out in the training of graduated and post-graduated students.
5. Organizing communication and dissemination activities
An International Congress will be organized once a year, developing from and drawing on the experience of the two CiiEM congresses which have already been held. Extended abstracts will be published in a high-impact peer-reviewed international journal. Other regular public meetings of the CiiEM research areas and laboratories will be organised. Initiatives directed to the spread of scientific knowledge through the general public - particularly schools, qualified professionals and the academic community will be organised increasingly frequently (Open day, Summer Schools, Workshops, Conferences, etc.).
6. Implementation of the ISO 9001:2015 quality standard requirements in the research activities of the Centre.
10.3 Summary in English for evaluation

3. Enhancing external cooperation and participation in scientific networks.
It is essential that the scientific work at CiiEM remains current and connected to the most significant scientific international trends. To this purpose CiiEM will continue to encourage the formation of scientific partnerships and the participation of its members in international meetings and networks giving priority to participation in international projects.
4. Extending the involvement of CiiEM in postgraduate teaching activities (PhD). CiiEM hosts Bachelors, Masters and PhD students from Egas Moniz and other universities. Their theses will be monitored, expanded and the development of conditions for full high quality support will be a priority.
5. Organizing an international Congress and other dissemination iniciatives
Results from the ongoing work are presented annually in the CiiEM Congress, held jointly with international partner institutions, and the abstracts published in a highly ranked International Open Access journal. After the publication of the abstract book of the 2nd CiiEM Congress, negotiations with Annals of Medicine for a multi-year agreement to continue hosting these publications are progressing well. Annals of Medicine spans a wide range of biomedical subjects and has a high visibility among the scientific community as shown by its IF of 3.87, ranking it in the top 10%.
The following seminar series will be continued for the foreseeable future:
by the Research Areas (4/year), by the Research Laboratories (2/year) and via Clinical Meetings (monthly). Ad hoc seminars and courses will be held frequently.
Other initiatives aiming to spread the knowledge produced at CiiEM through various societal actors will be carried out (Publications, Open day, Summer Schools, Conferences, Workshops etc.).
6. Implementation of the ISO 9001:2015 quality standard requirements. The functioning of CiiEM processes will be tuned to comply with ISO 9001:2015. This will involve an increased monitoring and perfectioning of procedures carried out by the laboratories and the CiiEM as a whole.
