Abstract

10.2 Summary in English for general dissemination purposes Comprehensive Health Research Centre (CHRC) is a multidisciplinary, multi-institutional and comprehensive new research unit aimed at developing, supporting and fostering clinical, public health and health services research. The other CHRC pillars are health education, training and innovation. Main management unit is NOVA Medical School. The other 4 management units are National School of Public Health, Évora University, Hospital Santo Espírito, Azores and Lisbon Institute of Global Mental Health. 26 institutions signed partnership agreements. CHRC gathers 125 integrated PhD researchers, 60 PhD students, 48 integrated non-PhD researchers and 47 collaborators with diverse backgrounds and skills, investigating and collaborating across 4 thematic lines (I-IV) and 17 research groups (1-17): I) Health promotion, population health and lifestyles (1-environmental and occupational health; 2-nutrition and health promotion; 3-exercise, sports sciences and human development; 4-sleep, chronobiology and sleep disorders; 5-smoking and addictions; 6-healthy and active ageing); II) High burden and high mortality diseases (7-cardiovascular and respiratory; 8-musculoskeletal; 9-mental health determinants, needs and interventions; 10- sensation and hearing disorders; 11-clinical studies in immune dysregulation from pregnancy to adulthood; 12- infection, sepsis and antibiotics resistance); III) Health policies and healthcare services research (13-patient-centered care research; 14-efficiency, incentives and sustainability; 15-health services research and equity; 16-global and population mental health); IV) Health innovation (17- health innovation, digital health and entrepreneurship). CHRC main objectives for 2018-22 are: 1)To strengthen the research team; 2) To enhance problem-oriented and interdisciplinary research and to foster collaborative projects; 3) To provide support for clinical, public health and epidemiological research; 4) To increase the ability to attract public and private funding; 5) To create opportunities for advanced teaching and training for researchers and students; 6) To deliver community health services and enhance population health literacy; 7) To expand the international network of research and become an international leader; 8) To transfer knowledge and technology; 9) To promote international visibility and open scientific culture. CHRC researchers will be supported by technical and administrative departments. Our model of governance is organized in 3 levels: 1) Board of Directors at the strategic level; 2) Executive Committee as the key player managing CHRC activities, directly supported by the unit´s management team; 3) External Advisory Committee, a board of scientists and health stakeholders acting as external advisers. CHRC is guided by good clinical practices principles and ethical rules, respecting human dignity and life, promoting team-work with a clear and transparent communication among all. 10.3 Summary in English for evaluation Comprehensive Health Research Centre (CHRC) is a multidisciplinary, multi-institutional and comprehensive new research unit aimed at developing, supporting and fostering clinical, public health and health services research. The other CHRC pillars are health education, training and innovation. Our center includes 5 management partners. Main management unit is NOVA Medical School, one of the country´s leading medicalschools. The other 4 are: National School of Public Health; Évora University (Nursing School and Sports and Health Department); Hospital Santo Espírito, Terceira Island, Azores (SEEBMO Specialized Department on Epidemiology and Molecular Biology); and Lisbon Institute of Global Mental Health. 26 institutions signed partnership agreements. CHRC gathers 125 integrated PhD researchers, 60 PhD students, 48 integrated non-PhD researchers, and 47 collaborators with diverse backgrounds and skills. Team members will investigate, collaborate and teach across 4 thematic lines (I-IV) and 17 research groups (1-17): I) Health promotion, population health and lifestyles (1-environmental and occupational health; 2-nutrition and health promotion; 3-exercise, sports sciences and human development; 4-sleep, chronobiology and sleep disorders; 5-smoking and addictions; 6-healthy and active ageing); II) High burden and high mortality diseases (7-cardiovascular and respiratory; 8-musculoskeletal; 9-mental health determinants, needs and interventions; 10- sensation and hearing disorders; 11-clinical studies in immune dysregulation from pregnancy to adulthood; 12- infection, sepsis and antibiotics resistance); III) Health policies and healthcare services research (13-patient-centered care research; 14-efficiency, incentives and sustainability; 15-health services research and equity; 16-global and population mental health); IV) Health innovation (17- health innovation, digital health and entrepreneurship). The thematic lines are in accordance with the H2020 goals and the health research agenda for Portugal 2020-30. CHRC is committed to promote and implement activities to support and develop applied health research in Portugal, towards an excellency international level. We are also committed to patient health education and empowerment and exploiting research findings into commercial applications. CHRC researchers have a large record of successful achievements on observational studies, clinical trials, health economic assessments, health services research, database management, pharmacogenetics, health applications for information technologies, education and training. CHRC main objectives for 2018-22: 1)To strengthen the research team with the aim of establishing an intellectual power-house in the key research areas of the CHRC; 2) To enhance problem-oriented and interdisciplinary research, to ensure that research produced in the CHRC is relevant and to foster collaborative projects; 3) To provide support for clinical, public health and epidemiological research and help researchers to conduct safe and successful observational and experimental studies with children and adults; 4) To increase the ability to attract public and private funding; 5) To create opportunities for advanced teaching and training for senior, young researchers and students; 6) To deliver science and health services to community and enhance population health literacy; 7) To expand the international network of research and become an international leader; 8) To transfer knowledge and technology; 9) To promote results communication, international visibility and open scientific culture. An annual call for collaborative projects within the 4 thematic lines, involving 2 or more CHRC research groups will be established. CHRC researchers will be supported by a technical department composed by specialized offices such as Statistics& Modelling, Cochrane ENSP Center, Biobank, Genetic Lab, Clinical Trials Unit (NovaCRU and PtCRIN) and Technology Transfer Office. CHRC benefits from a strong organized administrative department that provides support in financial and project management, regulatory affairs, communication, and institutional and international relationships. We will build research capacity through our education and training department, responsible for establishing research exchange partnerships and disseminate research training opportunities offered by the medical and health science schools members. Our model of governance is organized in 3 levels: 1) Board of Directors is the strategic level. It is composed by the Coordinator (NMS), also a representative of each management unit and the CHRC unit manager. Responsible for plan and strategic decisions, budget and financial reports approval. 2) Executive Committee is the key player managing CHRC activities. Composed by coordinator, Helena Canhão (NMS), Julian Perelman (ENSP) and Felismina Mendes (UE) and is supported by CHRC unit manager. Meets monthly. It will be directly supported by the unit management team, as it is going to monitor programs progress, its resource utilization, and carry out accounting and reporting roles. An intermediary management structure lead by thematic line coordinators responsible to engage research group PIs will assure scientific autonomy. Management team under the supervision of the Executive Committee will be responsible to submit annually reports to Board of Directors. Selected projects will be presented at General annual meeting. 3) External Advisory Committee is a board of scientists and health stakeholders acting as external advisers to adjust program trends, suggest areas of reinforcement and evaluate project goals and deliverables. CHRC is guided by good clinical practices principles, respecting human dignity and life. We promote team-work, motivated by a common vision and mission, according ethical rules, with a clear and transparent communication among all, promoting justice and competence, and the wellbeing of subjects and researchers.
