Abstract

10.2 Summary in English for general dissemination purposes Centre of Applied Research in Management and Economics (CARME) is a new research and development (R&D) unit, which emerges from the combined will and efforts of several professors from the Department of Management and Economics of the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria (IPLeiria) to pursue R&D activities in their areas of expertise and interest. At this point, it counts 22 members: 16 integrated, all belonging to IPLeiria, and 6 PhD collaborators, from IPLeiria and other Higher Education Institutions. CARME mission is to enhance regional development and innovation, through integration between basic and applied research in management and economics, strongly oriented towards professional practice and engaging researchers, students, industry and non-profit organizations in a collaborative manner. Our vision is to play a central role in a platform of knowledge co-creation between R&D, higher education, industry and social partners, creating an inspiring environment for multidisciplinary research with impact on companies and non-profit organizations, translated into a valuable benefit for society at large. To accomplish CARME mission, the strategy defined for the next 5 years is guided by 3 strategic objectives (SO): SO1 Contribute to the advance, application and dissemination of knowledge SO2 Contribute to regional development SO3 Increase the degree of internationalization Our primary focus is on applied research, seeking practical answers to increasing challenges placed by the political, economic, social and technological context. With this perspective, SO1 will be attained through increasing participation in R&D projects, stimulating interinstitutional and multidisciplinary collaboration in future R&D activities, increasing the number and impact of scientific publications and reinforcing the research team. Enhancing regional development is at the core of our mission and vision. Thus, we expect to maximize regional impact of research and strengthen the role of CARME as a boundary spanner between research, innovation and education. In order to accomplish this SO2, efforts will be made to reinforce theexisting partnerships and collaborative research with local stakeholders, contribute to regional innovation and competitiveness as well as to regional sustainability. CARME internationalization is fundamental not only to gain peer-recognition at international level, but also to act as a link to international networks of knowledge and specific expertise which may be critical for regional stakeholders. In operational terms, SO3 translates into the following: enhancing international visibility of CARME activities, diversifying funding, extending to international sources, collaborating in the development of MSc Double Degrees Programmes with foreign HEIs and organizing international conferences with high impact. We believe the described strategic objectives reveal internal coherence and trigger suitable activities to accomplish our mission. 10.3 Summary in English for evaluation Centre of Applied Research in Management and Economics (CARME) is a new research and development (R&D) unit, which emerges from the combined will and efforts of several professors from the Department of Management and Economics of the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria (IPLeiria) to pursue R&D activities in their areas of expertise and interest. Our vision is to play a central role in a platform of knowledge co-creation between R&D, higher education, industry and social partners, creating an inspiring environment for multidisciplinary research with impact on companies and non-profit organizations translated into a valuable benefit for society at large. To accomplish CARME mission, the strategy defined for the next 5 years is guided by 3 strategic objectives (SO): SO1 - Contribute to the advance, application and dissemination of knowledge SO2 – Contribute to regional development SO3 - Increase the degree of internationalization These SO are further detailed into the following operational objectives and goals (numbered according to the correspondent SO and presented in detail in section 11.1). 1.1. Increase participation in R&D projects We aim to submit applications of 5 new projects (one application in each year), considering our previous experience, demonstrated by 4 R&D approved projects in the last 5 years (two ongoing). 1.2. Stimulate interinstitutional and multidisciplinary collaboration As a result of closer cooperation with other institutions and research areas, we anticipate that 3 of the 5 R&D projects to be submitted will involve members from distinct institutions (current collaborators or not) and thatall R&D projects will assume a multidisciplinary approach, involving researchers and students from multiple scientific areas. 1.3. Increase the number and impact of scientific publications CARME goals for the next 5 years in this operational objective is a minimum of 5 production indicators per member (articles in international peer-reviewed journals, books, chapters and conference proceedings); 50% increase in the number of indexed publications; 90% of publications uploaded in Open Access Scientific Repositories of Portugal. 1.4. Strengthen the research team We plan to expand our research team in 33% in the next 5 years through the following: recruitment of 1 PhD holder and 2 PhD fellowships (subject to approval of programmatic funding); inclusion of IPLeiria researchers who did not meet the minimum conditions to join this starting team; involving undergraduate and MSc students in CARME activities. Besides, we plan to integrate another PhD holder and 5 research fellowships, through R&D projects approval. 2.1. Reinforce partnerships and collaborative research with local stakeholders Expected outcomes of stronger collaboration with regional business, sectorial associations and non-profit organizations include: conduct 3 R&D projects with the participation of local partners and an impact on regional development; 50% of MSc thesis (from 2020 onwards) with a direct or indirect application to regional development; create 1 spin-off firm with CARME members’ collaboration, by 2022.2.2. Contribute to regional innovation and competitiveness Management and economics applied research may exert an important role in capacity building towards innovation adoption, particularly when carried out in a multidisciplinary setting. We expect our industry and society-driven research to address topics with a real impact on regional innovation and competitiveness. 2.3. Contribute to regional sustainability We plan to strengthen this research topic by engaging in multidisciplinary and applied projects in which at least 3 will specifically address sustainability (considering economic, environmental and social dimension). 3.1. Raise international visibility The defined goals are to increase international co-authorship in paper publications by 20%, involvement in international conferences scientific committees by 10%, participation of researchers in international mobility (1 outgoing per member) and keep international journal editorial board activities. 3.2. Diversify funding sources Through better training of researchers (internal and external) regarding international calls’ proposals, together with a higher engagement in international networks in which members already participate, we plan to submit 2 international applications during this period. 3.3. Collaborate in the development of MSc Double Degrees Programmes with foreign HEIs. As a consequence of currently initiating contacts, it is our goal to have two running MSc Double Degrees Programmes in 2022, with the collaboration of CARME members as lecturers and thesis supervisors. 3.4. Organize international conferences with high impact CARME plans to organize one large international conference (+200 participants) with indexed conference proceedings. CARME previous major achievements were attained in the topics of regional economics, development and planning; sustainable development; Human Resources management and organizational behaviour; international business management and family firms. With the constitution of this R&D unit, our mid-term perspective is not only to reinforce these topics, but also to improve research outputs and produce higher impact in other topics within the broad scientific areas of management and economics.
