Abstract
10.2 Summary in English for general dissemination purposes
CEOS.PP, founded in March 2017, resulted from the integration of three former Research Centres of Porto Accounting and Business School (ISCAP). The merging of these into a bigger and interdisciplinary R&D Unit in the field of Social and Organizational Studies was a strategic option of Porto Polytechnic and ISCAP, oriented towards the repositioning and reinforcing of the scientific structures of IPP in national and international research networks.
The three former R&D units brought together a competitive and interdisciplinarity team of 42 Integrated Researchers and more than 60 Collaborator Researchers aggregated in three research Units: Research Unit on Law and Business Studies (UECEJ); Research Unit on Information Systems (UESI); Research Unit on Languages, Communication and Education (UELCE). The cross-domain research developed by these units comes to existence in the development of applied research projects and the promotion of interdisciplinarity, thus contributing to the broadening of the activities to new knowledge and professional practices, the quality and the impact of the scientific activity and to strengthen the collaboration with other areas of society and business initiatives.
CEOS.PP’s mission is clearly identified as focusing on (1) the promotion of inter and multidisciplinary research activities of R&D; (2) promoting highly specialized consultancy and innovative advanced training in the fields of: Management, Law, Communication, Education, Information Systems and Technologies; (3) actively contributing to the National and Regional development, as well as to the competitiveness of the Portuguese Scientific and Higher Education System.
CEOS.PP team aims at developing and promoting digital skills and solutions to help transform traditional organizations into top performers in the digital economy era. The research activities are, therefore, developed around the following main research lines: Entrepreneurship and Innovation; Digital Strategies for Marketing and Communication; Information Systems and Technologies in Organizations; Communication and Languages in Organizational Environments; Organizational and social development through innovation; Enterprise, Social and Learning Analytics; Social Economy; Human Resources: enhancing people, organisations and communities; Accountability and Reporting.
CEOS.PP intends to work in the organizations intangible skills needed for the future economy, especially the ones that create customer value, promote operational efficiency, generate information and knowledge and develop the human capital. In doing so, we will cooperate with national and international organizations, universities and R&D units aiming at the development of comprehensible and practical results.
10.3 Summary in English for evaluation
In its brief history CEOS has accomplished important milestones. The integration of 3 R&D units made it possible to share knowledge and perform interdisciplinary work with the dynamic senior researchers working across boundaries and achieve global and innovative solutions for the complex problems, the economy and society face in the 21st century. The Board assumed the mission to realign the existing strategic and operational structures and transform CEOS.PP into a national and international reference: a research centre contributing to advancing scientific knowledge in the social and organizational fields, with a clear focus on the interaction with organizations. This vision is aligned with IPP’s creation of PORTIC – Porto Research, Technology& Innovation Center, intended to reinforce and reposition IPP’s R&D units’ activities.
To accomplish CEOS.PP’s mission our action plan is focused on the promotion of inter- multidisciplinary R&D research activities, highly specialized consultancy and innovative advanced training; with a valuable contribution to the National and Regional development, as well as to the competitiveness of the Portuguese Scientific and HE System on a worldwide base.
The Board conducted individual and group meetingswith researchers, institutional representatives (IPP, ISEP and ISCAP), and many national, regional and local actors (ANI; Regional City Halls; Porto Design Factory; Regional and Industry Associations; R&D units). Through this survey, the potential role of CEOS.PP’s in the Portuguese scientific system was clearly identified and launched the discussion among the researchers around the present and future strategies. This led to a consensual SWOT analysis and an engagement around two main guidelines: a) the idea that scientific advances occur at the frontier or intersection between disciplines; b) that researchers must tackle real-life problems, to develop valuable resources for organizations andsociety. The discussion about the strategic objectives/indicators, resulted on a series of commitments to increase:
• CEOS.PP international reputation by strengthening international research partnerships with EU partners, R&D units, and reinforce contacts with non-EU countries (namely CPLP and emerging markets);
• Cooperation with local, regional, national and international actors to disseminate and transfer scientific knowledge to organizations, people and communities;
• Involvement of students and young researchers in scientific activities;
• The number of proposals for highly specialized training programmes for professionals, managers and researchers;
• Financial sustainability, especially by developing the capability to attract and capture external funding (especially H2020, Portugal2020, Norte2020, FCT);
• Training opportunities to develop CEOS.PP researchers’ capabilities;
• Standards of internal and external awareness, namely by attracting external researchers and by defining requirements for a minimal output for all researchers.
Considering the novelty and uncertainty of the environmental conditions, the consensus around these objectives was a complex process, especially regarding the centre’s financial sustainability and the definition of scientific outputs for the researchers.
The analysis of the strategic course and commitments for the next 4 years brought a clarification about the need to nurture/further develop research projects as an engine to foster robust research activities that will realize the different objectives and indicators. Thus, a set of projects from the 3 units and the respective research lines were defined to stimulate CEOS.PP future activity and research. These projects, described in 11.2, have a national (local, regional) and international range.
Along with the development of these projects, CEOS.PP will develop a series of innovative initiatives: launch prizes for master/doctoral students in the areas of digital entrepreneurship/accounting/information systems, maintain RECEJ edition and promote its indexation to SCOPUS; develop a strong connection to other national and international journals; create an open day dedicated to organizational and social sciences research, among others.
These initiatives and the different projects aim at attracting new funding and increasing CEOS.PP budget up to 2.500.000€ in the next four years (in the last four years CEOS.PP researchers attracted around 900.000€).
CEOS.PP also aims at developing the existing facilities and infrastructures (the existing are composed of 3 rooms for researchers and one for CEOS.PP management team and administrative staff), namely by creating a Digital Incubator. This incubator will support initiatives in the area of digital economy, help promote entrepreneurship in digital business and foster researchers’ creativity and attract students to engage in research activities.
