Abstract

10.2 Summary in English for general dissemination purposes The Center of Mathematics (CMAT) is a research unit of the University of Minho (UM), with a Pole at the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD), that aims to develop and promote research activity covering a large range of fundamental and applied mathematical areas. The unit is composed of 41 Integrated Researchers, 12 PhD Students and 11 external Collaborator Researchers, from other institutions, with excellent curricula in Mathematics. CMAT is structured in four research groups gathering researchers from fundamental and applied mathematics: Algebra, Logic and Computation; Analysis and Applications; Geometry, Topology and Applications; and Statistics, Applied Probability and Operational Research. Areas of application include Computer Science, Engineering, Environment Sciences, Physics, and Health Sciences. The plan of activities proposed for the period 2018-22 is supported by a dynamic team and covers the following areas: Matrix Theory, Numerical Linear Algebra, Combinatorics, Semigroups, Quantum Logics and Coding, Proof Systems and Programming, Algebraic Topology, Discrete and Differential Geometry; Mathematical Relativity, Differential Equations, Mathematical Modeling and Numerics, Dynamic Fields, Dynamical Systems, Hypercomplex Analysis, Operator Theory, Special Functions, Statistics, Applied Probability and Operational Research. CMAT is committed to a policy of high quality research, which is witnessed by publication in renown journals, benefits from the interaction with prestigious national and international research centers, and is part of several international networks. The unit is strongly committed to increase its overall performance, along three related vectors: (i) by the reinforcement of national and international collaborations, the promotion of new scientific partnerships, and hosting of prestigious conferences and other relevant events; (ii) by pursuing and improving the participation in projects; (iii) by renewing and increasing its critical mass, granting postdoc positions under programmatic funding. The advanced training of students is a priority of CMAT, particularly through the joint PhD program MAP-PDMA of the Universities of Minho, Aveiro and Porto. With this partnership, CMAT not only meets society's demands for highly qualified employees, but also fulfills its research goals and reinforces PhD supervision by CMAT members. In order to attract more PhD students, CMAT intends to award scientific initiation grants (BICs) to the best students at undergraduate and graduate levels. CMAT fulfills, through numerous collaborations with local and regional entities (companies, foundations, libraries, schools), the mission of organizing and participating in outreach activities, including the promotion of scientific awareness. CMAT will continue to develop its commitment with this mission. 10.3 Summary in English for evaluation The Center of Mathematics (CMAT) is a Research Unit of the University of Minho (UM), with a Pole at the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD), that aims to develop and promote its research activity covering a large range of fundamental and applied mathematical areas. The partnership between UM and UTAD is, so far, unique in the context of Portuguese Mathematics research centers. In addition to the strengthening and territorial densification of the scientific national system, it puts CMAT in a competitive position, being the only Mathematics research center to the north of Porto. The Unit is composed of 41 Integrated Researchers and 12 PhD Students, fulfilling certain scientific requirements. The team also includes 11 Collaborator Researchers from other institutions with excellent curricula in Mathematics, effectively contributing to the scientific activity of CMAT. CMAT is structured in four research groups gathering researchers from fundamental and applied Mathematics, namely: Algebra, Logic and Computation (ALC); Analysis and Applications (ANAP); Geometry, Topology and Applications (GTA) and Statistics, Applied Probability and Operational Research (SAPOR). Areas of application include Computer Science, Engineering, Environment Sciences, Physics, and Health Sciences. The plan of activities proposed for the period 2018-22 is supported by an active team and covers the following areas: Matrix Theory, Numerical Linear Algebra, Combinatorics, Semigroups, Quantum Logics and Coding, Proof Systems and Programming, Algebraic Topology, Discrete and Differential Geometry; Mathematical Physics, Differential Equations, Mathematical Modeling and Numerics, Dynamic Fields, Dynamic Systems, Hypercomplex Analysis, Operator Theory, Special Functions, Statistics, Applied Probability and Operational Research (see sections 11.1 and 11.2 for a detailed description). The Unit is strongly committed to increase its overall performance, and several strategies are to be implemented. In order to reinforce national and international collaborations and to promote new scientific partnerships, CMAT will actively support exchange visits between CMAT members and external researchers. Additionally, to disseminate ongoing research and interact with a wider international community, CMAT intends to host prestigious conferences and other relevant events with renown experts for specific research topics. Some of these events are already scheduled for 2018 and 2019. To further increase the impact of its research, CMAT will give priority to communications in key international scientific events and encourage the participation in international committees. CMAT is involved in pursuing and improving the participation in projects and networks with national and international researchers, and collaborations with other scientific areas. This commitment increases not only the quality of scientific production but also the existing interplay between fundamental and applied Mathematics. Thus, it contributes to the transfer of mathematical knowledge and tools to other scientific domains, including partnerships with industry, services and other economic sectors. By granting postdoc positions under programmatic funding, CMAT will increase its critical mass and sustain its policy of high quality research. These postdocs will be hired in the context of specific group tasks and are expected to contribute to several other group activities, such as project applications, postgraduate training, seminars, among others. Another high priority of CMAT is the advanced training of students. At PhD level, the joint PhD program MAP-PDMA of the Universities of Minho, Aveiro and Porto is essential to reinforce PhD supervision by CMAT members. With this partnership, CMAT aims to fulfill the Unit goals for developing a strong research environment and also to meet society's demands for highly qualified employees. In order to attract more PhD students, CMAT started, in 2013-17, a program at undergraduate and graduate levels that awarded scientific initiation grants (BICs) to the best students. Although this program could not be maintained due to the financial constraints of CMAT, it is still a priority of the Unit. The organization and participation in outreach activities are an important role of CMAT with impact in society. CMAT will continue its commitment to develop projects in collaboration with local and regional entities (companies, foundations, libraries, schools) and its mission of promoting scientific awareness through initiatives such as public talks and exhibitions. Finally, and concerning CMAT's organization, the Unit is scientifically and administratively managed by three bodies: the Director (D); the Scientific Council (SC), which is composed by all Integrated Researchers; the Directive Committee (DC), composed by the D, the Pole Coordinator, two Vice-Directors (one from UM and the other from UTAD) and the Coordinators of the Research Groups. The DC directs and coordinates all research policies, plans the activities of the Unit and is responsible for the day-to-day management of the Unit. The financial management is, at a first stage, performed by the DC that decides strategic expenses such as research grants and support for visiting external members and scientific meetings. The groups, thereafter, manage their funds according to their scientific plans.
