Abstract

10.2 Summary in English for general dissemination purposes Created in 1987, CHAIA – Centre for Art History and Artistic Research - is a multidisciplinary R&D unit of the University of Évora with the mission of developing basic and applied research activities, its diffusion, advanced training, and university extension, particularly in the thematic lines of artistic, architectural, and landscape heritage (DTI), artistic and design practices (DTII), and arts, communities, and identities (DTIII). It has been organised into six research groups corresponding to the scientific fields which support its activity: (G1) Art History, (G2) Archaeology, (G3) Architecture, (G4) Visual Arts and Design, (G5) Landscape, and (G6) Theater and Performance Studies. The groups converge, on a multi-transdisciplinary level, on a critical analysis of the arts, architecture, and landscape as heritage – Critical Heritage -, where the study of the past (DTI), from pre-history to current times, come together, with artistic and design practices (DTII), in the present, approaching heritage as a cultural and social process of representation and re-interpretation of past and individual or collective identities (DTIII). CHAIA’s activities favour the heritages of Évora and the region of Alentejo, which are handled in a comparative transnational manner. It is worth noting the subjects of megalithic heritage and rock art; architecture, the city, and landscape – from the Roman era to present times; the history of painting and tiles (16th-18th centuries); puppet shows (repertoire and practices); art, science, and technology; the arts and social designs; digital heritage (digital as a research laboratory for humanity); art historiography; and heritage history and theory. Its actions are guided by the valuation of heritage as an operative concept where its scientific areas converge on a transdisciplinary level through the use of critical and historiographic methods as models for a theoretical reference, and through the assertion of artistic and design practices as forms of knowledge, critical reflection, and research by design, and the promotion of multi-transdisciplinary research. Through its activities, CHAIA intends to deepen and extend knowledge within the scientific fields therein, in order to support and consolidate advanced training at the University of Évora, particularly doctoral programmes which are directly associated (Archaeology, Architecture, Landscape Arts and Techniques, Visual Arts, and Art History), contribute towards the value and preservation of their study objects, promote the internationalisation of their research and cooperation with other R&D units, along with national and international institutions; implement strategies and methodologies for transferring knowledge with a broader impact on the community and environment; promote the captivation and training of human resources and the involvement of the youth and artistic community in scientific activities. 10.3 Summary in English for evaluation Created in 1987 as IHA/UE – Instituto de Historia da Arte da Universidade de Evora (Art History Institute of the University of Evora), itsdesignation was changed to CHA – Centro de Historia da Arte (Art History Centre) in 1997, and to CHAIA – Centro de Historia da Arte e Investigaçao Artística (Centre for Art History and Artistic Research ) in 2008, following a gradual diversification of its research groups and the extension of its areas of intervention, with Art History being incorporated into a larger scientific domain of artistic and heritage studies. CHAIA is currently a multidisciplinary R&D unit with the mission of developing basic and applied research activities, its diffusion, advanced training, and university extension, particularly in the thematic lines of artistic, architectural, and landscape heritage (DTI); artistic and design practices (DTII); arts, communities, and identities (DTIII). It is formed by six research groups corresponding to the scientific which support its activity: Art History, Archaeology, Architecture, Visual Arts and Design, Landscape, and Theatre and Performance Studies. CHAIA is incorporated in the second action line of the UÉ Strategic Development Plan, concerning research, but also supports and frame scientifically in its fields of specialization the other two lines, related to education and knowledge transfer. It is also a direct participant in one of the structuring key areas of the University of Evora (UE): Heritage and The Arts, which includes historical, built, archaeological, and artistic heritage, as well as the use of regional raw materials in new applications by arts, architecture, and design applications. CHAIA research groups converge on a multi-transdisciplinary level at a critical approach of the arts, architecture, and landscape as heritage – Critical Heritage -, where the study and knowledge of the past (DTI), from pre-history to current times, come together with artistic and design practices (DTII), in the present, approaching heritage as a cultural and social process for the representation and re-interpretation of cultural heritage and group and individual identities (DTIII). It is worth noting the thematic research on megalithic monuments and rock art; architecture, city and landscape – from the Roman era to present times; the history of painting and tiles (16th-18th centuries); puppet shows (repertoire and practices); the theatre and interdisciplinary dialogues; art, science, and technology; arts and social designs and transdisciplinarity; art historiography; digital heritage (digital as a research laboratory for humanities); and heritage history and theory. CHAIA’s actions are guided by the valuation of heritage as an operative concept where its scientific areas converge on a transdisciplinary level through theuse of critical and historiographic methods as models for a theoretical and analytical reference, and through the assertion of research by design, artistic and design practices as means of critical reflection, as ways to produce knowledge and promote multi-transdisciplinary research. Through its activities, CHAIA intends to deepen and extend knowledge within the scientific fields therein, in order to: support and consolidate advanced training at the University of Evora, particularly through the doctoral programmes which are directly associated to the centre (Archaeology, Architecture, Landscape Arts and Techniques, Visual Arts, and Art History); contribute towards the preservation of the heritage value of their study objects; promote the internationalisation of their research and cooperation with other R&D units, along with national and international institutions; implement strategies and methodologies of knowledge transfer with a broader impact on the non-academic community and environment; promote the captivation and training of human resources and the involvement of the youth and artistic community in scientific activities. CHAIA favours the heritage(s) of Evora – enlisted as UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986 – and the region of Alentejo given their relevance to the city and region as astructuring factor of its identity and economic and social sustainability, within a comparative transnational approach, particularly in the context of the Mediterranean and Portuguese worlds. This way, the focus on Alentejo brings into line CHAIA’s actions and the "Alentejo’s Operational Programme, Portugal2020 – C(2014)10163", which corresponds to Priority Area 3 - Research, Technological Development, and Innovation for the promotion of multidisciplinary cooperation; and also the Regional Strategy for Smart Specialisation by means of the areas of expertise on Heritage, Cultural and Creative Industries, and Tourist Services, whose rationale is based, among other aspects, on the complementarity of the different stages of Alentejo’s historical heritage qualification and upgrading process (urban, monumental, and natural, sacred and popular art) – which includes preservation, description, interpretation, enlivening, and diffusion – being activities that have the capacity to generate wealth and employment, particularly from regional centres like CHAIA.
