Abstract
10.2 Summary in English for general dissemination purposes
CEF research strategy for 2018-2022 is aligned with the vision and recognition of innovative potential of the Forest priority, in the National Strategy for Intelligent Specialization, and with the research priorities identified in the National Strategy for Forests. The focus will be on the increase of knowledge to support landscape design and management of more resilient forests and forest spaces, including agro-forest and riparian ecosystems, shrublands and grasslands, guaranteeing the satisfaction of the societal requirements for products and services. The research will be multidisciplinary involving the four CEF research groups: Forest Ecology (ForEco); Protection, Restoration& Services in Forests and Agroecosystems (ForProtect); Forest Ecosystem Management Under Global Change (ForChange); Forest Products and Biorefineries (ForTec).
The general objectives of CEF address three areas: research, advanced education and knowledge dissemination.
Research will include basic and problem-solving topics, the first giving the support to the more applied ones. Wildfires are an increasing problem in Portugal’s rural landscape and a major threat for our forests, thus CEF has elected the topic as a strategic research priority for 2018-2022. The research related to forest fires requires a multidisciplinary approach that will be achieved by the cooperation between CEF’s research groups. The increasing relevance of pests and diseases and drought events will also be addressed by this interdisciplinary effort. The objective is to propose preventive silviculture measures to reduce the vulnerability of forests to all types of hazards. Topics to be addressed include: increasing forest productivity; genetic improvement of forest trees to cope with climate change; sustainable management of the forest resources and the multiple use of the forest spaces and related ecosystems; rehabilitation of burned areas and design of fire-resilient landscapes; reducing forest vulnerability to pests and diseases; valuating ecosystem services and promoting biodiversity; improving the organization and quality of the primary forest sector, namely the capacity and competence of its agents; developing forest-based green chemistry and products.
In advanced education the general objective of CEF is to make a significant contribution towards positioning the University of Lisbon, where it is embedded, as a relevant research university in the areas of forestry and forest products, through international Msc and doctoral programs and projects, research framing of post-graduate students, as well as creating a personal and scientific learning environment for young post-doctoral researchers.
For knowledge dissemination and transfer of results, and following FCT Open Access Policy, CEF will promote an Open Science approach based on cooperative work and new ways of diffusing knowledge by using digital technologies and new collaborative tools, supporting an open collaboration in science research.
10.3 Summary in English for evaluation
CEF mission is to conduct and coordinate relevant research and innovative solutions on forest ecosystems and forest-based industrial chain, strengthening post-graduate education and training, as well as outreach activities. Its main objective is to increase knowledge of structure, dynamics, functioning and management of forests in relation to its complex environment along with innovation in products and services originated from these ecosystems. CEF has the vision and the goal to be the leading national and an international recognized forest-resources-based research and advanced education institution.
CEF research strategy for 2018-2022 is aligned with the vision and recognition of innovative potential of the Forest priority, in the National Strategy for Intelligent Specialization, and with the research priorities identified in the National Strategy for Forests. The focus will be on the increase of knowledge to support landscape design and management of more resilient forests and forest spaces, including agro-forest and riparian ecosystems, shrublands and grasslands, guarantying the satisfaction of the society requirements of products and services. The research will be multidisciplinary involving the four CEF research groups:
ForEco (Forest Ecology). Deals with basic and applied ecological research in forest ecosystems structure and function to support ecosystem management, focusing cork oak woodlands, pine and eucalypt plantations and shrublands focusing on biogeochemical and water cycles. Studies biodiversity responses to climate and land use change and droughts monitoring. Involves also global-scale fire research, developing quantitative methods to analyze and model environmental systems.
ForProtect (Protection, Restoration& Services in Forests and Agroecosystems). Focus on solutions to restore ecosystem integrity, either because biotic interactions need management (e.g. pest control), or abiotic pressures affect the biota (e.g. habitat engineering to resist fire or droughts), structures need mitigation (e.g. fish passes) or ecosystem services require valuation (e.g. policy or planning guidelines).
ForChange (Forest Ecosystem Management under Global Change). The emphasis is on the development of forest ecosystemsdynamic models to predict the potential supply of wood and non-wood products and other services and assess biotic and abiotic risk (namely wildfire risk) under climate change scenarios. The emphasis is further on the development of management planning approaches e.g. multiple criteria methods and DSS to provide trade-offs between several production, conservation and protection criteria and help design plans that may address concerns with the supply of wood and non wood products as well as of biodiversity, water quality, wildlife habitat and cultural services under global change scenarios.
ForTec (Forest Products and Biorefineries). Comprises the use of forest and industrial resources to a sustainable contribution to bio-based economies, knowing their chemical and structural characteristics to fully explore their potential as new sources of non-petroleum based compounds, new nutraceuticals and pharmacological, as base for new composites or engineered products, in response to society and consumer needs.
The general objectives of CEF address three areas:
-Research towards a knowledge-based responsible management of forests, forest-related ecosystems and related natural resources;
-Advanced education based on research and early stage researchers' career development;
-Knowledge dissemination and transfer of results to the society.
Research will include basic and problem-solving topics, the first giving the support to the more applied ones. Wildfires are an increasing problem in Portugal’s rural landscape and a major threat for our forests, reason why CEF has elected the topic as a strategic research priority for 2018-2022. The increasing relevance of pests and diseases and drought events will also be covered by this interdisciplinary effort.
