Abstract

10.2 Summary in English for general dissemination purposes The Centre for Textile Science and Technology (2C2T) started its activity in 1978, being the first Unit of R&D in Portugal specialized in the area of Fibrous Materials Engineering and Design. The vision and mission of 2C2T is to be recognized for excellent research in the field of fibre based materials, helping society to tackle the biggest and most pressing problems and providing the knowledge base for the continuing viability of the textile value chain for global competition. To accomplish this, the Unit adopts a multidisciplinary approach, carrying out research work with other research institutionsand companies, covering the complete supply chain. Nowadays, the Unit involves 27 Integrated Researchers organized in two research groups, namely the Fibrous Materials Engineering group and the Fibre-based Product Design group. The Unit’s Activities Plan for the next five years period is in tune with the strategy defined and implemented in the period 2013-2020, which essentially led to the expected results and productivity indicators. In the period 2013-2017, approximately one hundred funded projects were carried out. The most relevant scientific results were disseminated in peer-reviewed publications and scientific events. Protecting the intellectual property rights was ensured by the submission of patents. In the next period a growth of 10% in projects involvement is foreseen, to achieve a rate of 4 projects per researcher. In what concerns advanced training, the Doctoral Programmes in Textile Engineering and Fashion Design and the Master Courses in Textile Chemistry, Design and Marketing of Textile Products, Apparel and Accessories and Fashion Communication will be kept active in the next period. The MSc course in High Tech Textiles will be reformulated and proposed to start in 2019-2020. Shortly, the activities of 2C2T will be: • Reinforce the creation of scientific and technological knowledge resulting from research in the previously defined strategic areas of Nano and Multifunctional Materials, Sustainable and Advanced Processes and Technologies and Design and Product Engineering; • Further promote the interaction design methodologies - materials engineering research, to potentiate competitive product innovation; • Continue with cluster formation to increase and expand cross-fertilisation among research Units, to further increase critical mass; • Reinforce knowledge and technology transfer through spin-off mentoring and industry partnerships, to exploit economically research; • Develop international joint post-graduate programs; • Increase research Unit productivity indicators in international journal publications (annual average rate of 2 papers per researcher); • Reinforce the organization of seminars and conferences to disseminate research results. • Intensify the involvement of industrial partners exploring new opportunities addressed in the national and European ID&I priorities, to promote the sustainable development of the economy. 10.3 Summary in English for evaluation The Centre for Textile Science and Technology (2C2T) is recognized for excellent research in the field of Fibrous Materials Engineering and Design and aims to help society to tackle the biggest and most pressing problems and to provide the knowledge base for the continuing viability of the textile value chain for global competition. To accomplish this, the Unit adopts a multidisciplinaryapproach, carrying out research work within the University and also in collaboration with other universities, research institutions and companies, covering the complete supply chain. Nowadays, the Unit involves 27 Integrated Researchers organized in two research groups, namely the Fibrous Materials Engineering group and the Fibre-based Product Design group. The Unit’s Activities Plan for the next five years period is in tune with the strategy defined and implemented in the period 2013-2017, which essentially led to the expected results and productivity indicators. Therefore, the general strategic objectives of the 2C2T will be kept for 2022 namely: • Further contribution to the development of scientific and technological knowledge resulting from fibrous materials engineering and design research, focused in the research themes Nano and Multifunctional Materials, sustainable and Advanced Processes and Technologies and Design and Product Engineering; • Further integration of design research methodologies with materials engineering research, to promote competitive product innovation; • Promotion of cluster formation to increase and expand cross-fertilisation among research Units, to further increase critical mass; • Expand knowledge and technology transfer through spin-off mentoring and industry partnerships, to exploit research results at a maturity stage of proof-of-concept and lab prototype; • Enlarge research partnerships with industry; • Develop international joint post-graduate programs; • Increase research Unit productivity indicators in international journal publications and patents applications; • Organize seminars and conferences to disseminate research results. • Reinforce the involvement of industrial and regional partners exploring new opportunities addressed in the National and European RDI priorities to promote the development of the economy. In the period 2013-2017, approximately one hundred funded projects were carried out. An average of 3.6 projects per researcher was achieved. In the next five years period a growth of 10% in projects involvement is foreseen, to achieve a rate of 4 projects per researcher. A special effort will be directed to increase the participation in European projects to establish partnerships with top-level R&D institutions and enhance the international visibility of the Unit. The most relevant scientific results were disseminated in peer-reviewed publications and scientific events. A yearly average of 2 papers in journals, books and book chapters and 2,6 papers in proceedings per researcher was achieved. Nevertheless, the Unit´s target for the next five year period will be 2 papers in international journals to increase the scientific recognition of the research carried out. Protecting the intellectual property rights continues to be considered of utmost importance so that the developed solutions ensure the return of investment. In what concerns advancedtraining, the Doctoral Programmes in Textile Engineering and Fashion Design and the Master Courses in Textile Chemistry, Design and Marketing of Textile, Apparel and Accessories Products and Fashion Communication which showed good attractiveness from foreign students, namely from Brazil, will be kept active in the next five year period. Considering the inevitable evolution of the textile and apparel industries in countries from South America, Africa and Asia and on-going agreements, the Unit foresees expanding in the next period advanced education to those countries, namely Vietnam. Furthermore, the MSc course in High Tech Textiles will be reformulated and proposed to start in 2019-2020. In what concerns dissemination to scientific community and industries, the Unit will continue to organize international conferences and seminars in collaboration with other associations/institutions. In the next five-year period, the two biennial international conferences, one in the area of natural fibres (ICNF 2019, 2021) and the other in the area of fashion design (CIMODE 2018, 2020, 2022) will be organized. Also the XXth AUTEX World Textile Conference, one of the most important scientific events in the international community of textiles, will be organized by 2C2T and held at the University of Minho premises.
