Abstract

10.2 Summary in English for general dissemination purposes CULTURE, LANGUAGE, MOBILITY. A PROGRAMME FOR INTERCULTURAL RESEARCH Jointly hosted by the Nova University of Lisbon and the University of Porto, CETAPS convenes 50 integrated members and 94 collaborators (mostly early-career researchers) from 11 institutions of higher education. Our dominant disciplinary domain is in the field of English Studies, as understood and practised internationally, but this focus on the Anglophone world is sharpened and inflected by an operative awareness of our Portuguese cultural standpoint. This creates the conditions for a research rationale which is interlingual and intercultural, a relational characteristic that endows the Centre with its uniqueness - both nationally and internationally. From 2019 to 2022, CETAPS’s strategic plan will be structured around a programme for intercultural research focused on a critical interrogation of our complex contemporary European contexts, recently marked by crises of human mobility and various forms of ethnocentrism and xenophobia. Taking 'culture' and 'language' as social and cultural constructs that both promote communication and misunderstanding, interaction and separation, our research will find in 'mobility' a working framework for analysing individual and communal interactions, and responses to outsiders, as represented in imaginative, artistic and scientific production in English, from the Early Modern period to the present. Some of the enabling concepts for our inquiry - identity, community, hospitality, intercultural communication, translationality - are at the very centre of the debates that have energised the intellectual environment of the humanities and social sciences over the past two decades. They will be articulated with tools and perspectives proper to the disciplines of Literary and Cultural Studies, Utopian Studies, Intermediality, Translation, and Education - the dominant fields within which CETAPS researchers operate, always from a 'Portuguese' place of reading. Functionally, CETAPS is guided by the aim of fostering a collaborative and integrative research culture, while at the same time finetuning the relation between providing innovative teaching, offering the best conditions forthe development of high-quality research, and investing in high-impact knowledge transfer, reaching out to non-academic environments and addressing societal challenges. Our plans for 2019-2022 reflect our 7 strategic goals (http://www.cetaps.com/strategic-project/), and include an integrated programme of 40 events and over 30 edited books and monographs, a structured communication and publication policy, involvement in international networks, 2 online courses, and the development of our databases and of our digital lab. Planned activities 1. Teaching/training a. Initial training programmes - continued participation in Erasmus Mundus Masters Crossways in Cultural Narratives; the 11 MA courses related to Anglophone cultures at the 2 host institutions; JRAAS - the Junior Researchers in Anglo-American Studies training programme (http://www.cetaps.com/jraas-platform/training-programmes); Erasmus internships at CETAPS ((https://www.utopia500.net/utopia-500-team) b. Doctoral programmes - continued participation in the European Strategic Partnership New Faces; the European Joint Doctorate MOVES (expected to replace TEEME); the 6 doctoral programmes offered by the 2 host institutions (attention to be given to the 4 grants described in 14.1). Planned participation in the new doctoral programme to be launched by the Routes of Sustainability Network. c. Advanced Studies - Training of Postdoctoral researchers, namely of the 4 to be hired for the digital projects described in 14.2. 2. Research a. Publications - CETAPS will continue publishing its online journals. Revista de Estudos Anglo-Portugueses (already indexed to Scopus), no.s 27-31; E-TEALS, no.s 9-13; Via Panorâmica, no.s 7-11; Spaces of Utopia, nos. 4-8). It will launch 2 new online journals, the European Journal of Macau Studies (nos. 1-5) and New Voices in Portuguese Translation Studies (biannual; nos. 1-10). 3 new series of booklets, online and printed on demand, with 10,000-15,000-word essays in English or in Portuguese reflecting individual research (New Perspectives). Annotated translations of primary or critical texts of interest to Research Areas (RA) or Strands (RS) (In Other Words). And essays in Food Studies (Alimentopia). Members will pursue the policy of editing peer-reviewed themed collections, with international outlets, arising from conferences organized by our RAs and RSs, but including additional commissioned contributions. CETAPS members will endeavour to publish in indexed journals to which they have already contributed, such as The Translator, Utopian Studies, The Irish Review, and SEDERI. b. Conferences and seminars - CETAPS plans to organize at least 40 conferences, colloquia and series of lectures over the next 5 years to provide its researchers with opportunities to disseminate and get feedback on research findings. Each RA or RS will organize at least 1 major conference. Planned publications and conferences at http://www.cetaps.com/strategic-project/ppconferences 3. Knowledge transfer a. Continuing education - 2 massive open online courses described in 14.4 b. Outreach projects - CETAPS will continue to promote the 4 projects of the Utopia500 programme, contributing to social engagement in schools and interacting with local communities (utopia500.net); it will continue its partnership with the Portuguese National Library to organize events celebrating dates relevant to the Anglophone culture; it will further participate in the Collaborative Laboratory (CoLab) 'Cultures of the City'. Curatorships on artistic Anglo-Portuguese relations, and on artistic representations of food, have already been secured at the Chiado Museum of Contemporary Arts. c. Outreach activities - a range of other extramural events, involving institutional partnerships, will raise awareness of CETAPS's research value for society. Consolidating our Digital Lab will be the overarching project for our activities in the next 5 years, allowing CETAPS to engage junior and senior researchers in explorations of digital pedagogy; the avenues opened by digital research and methodologies; and the new ways of engaging with the public and communicating science.
