Abstract

10.2 Summary in English for general dissemination purposes The Center for Research and Development in Mathematics and Applications (CIDMA http://cidma.mat.ua.pt/) is a multidisciplinary research team hosted at University of Aveiro (http://www.ua.pt/). CIDMA was created in 2010, as a fusion between the previous FCT research centers<> and <> (that had their own roots in 1994). The CIDMA is one of the largest research centers in Portugal in the field of mathematics and applications, having 145 members and collaborators. Besides having PhD Members from several departments and polytechnic schools of University of Aveiro, CIDMA also has PhD Members from the following participating institutions: - Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto (FE/UP); - Instituto Politécnico de Coimbra (IPC); - Instituto Politécnico da Guarda (IPG); - Instituto Politécnico de Leiria (IPLeiria); - Instituto Politécnico de Setúbal (IPSetúbal); - Instituto Politécnico de Viana do Castelo (IPVC); - Instituto Politécnico de Viseu (IPV). CIDMA main goal is to carry out fundamental and applied research in several domains of Mathematics and spread such findings through scientific publications and meetings of high international level. The CIDMA also aims to contribute for the scientific development of young researchers (e.g. by supporting four PhD Programs) as well as for the preparation of new researchers through post-graduate and advanced education. In order to achieve such goals, CIDMA promotes activities such as: regular talks, courses and seminars; dissemination of the scientific production of its team through the participation in scientific meetings; international cooperation; organization of workshops and congresses; post-graduate and advanced research. In order to increase its contribution to social and economic development, the CIDMA also strives for an active participation in multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary projects in cooperation with other research teams. The CIDMA activities are scientifically organized in the following eight research groups: - Algebra and Geometry - Complex and Hypercomplex Analysis - Functional Analysis and Applications - Gravitational Geometry and Dynamics - History of Mathematics - Optimization, Graph Theory and Combinatorics - Probability and Statistics - Systems and Control Additionally, CIDMA has the following six Thematic Lines/Strands (which act transversally to the research groups): - GEOMETRIX http://geometrix.web.ua.pt/ - MATEAS - Mathematics: Teaching and Assessment in Higher Education http://mateas.wikidot.com/ - PICS - Inverse Problems and Applications in Health Sciences http://sweet.ua.pt/ukaehler/LtPICS/ - BIOMATH - Biomathematics (starting from 2019) - TFC - From Theory to Computational Tools (starting from 2019) - MI - Mathematics for Industry (starting from 2019) 10.3 Summary in English for evaluation The Center for Research and Development in Mathematics and Applications (CIDMA http://cidma.mat.ua.pt/) is a multidisciplinary research team hosted at University of Aveiro (http://www.ua.pt/). CIDMA was created in 2010, as a fusion between the previous FCT research centers<> and <> (that had their own roots in 1994). The CIDMA is one of the largest research centers in Portugal in the field of mathematics and applications, having 145 members and collaborators. Besides having PhD Members from several departments and polytechnic schools of University of Aveiro, an university well known for its commitment with research, CIDMA also has PhD Members from the following participating institutions: - Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto (FE/UP); - Instituto Politécnico de Coimbra (IPC); - Instituto Politécnico da Guarda (IPG); - Instituto Politécnico de Leiria (IPLeiria); - Instituto Politécnico de Setúbal (IPSetúbal); - Instituto Politécnico de Viana do Castelo (IPVC); - Instituto Politécnico de Viseu (IPV). CIDMA main goal is to carry out fundamental and applied research in several domains of Mathematics and spread such findings through scientific publications and meetings of high international level. The CIDMA also aims to contribute for the scientific development of young researchers (e.g. by supporting four PhD Programs) as well as for the preparation of new researchers through post-graduate and advanced education, following our good record in this respect in the past. In order to achieve such goals, CIDMA promotes activities such as: regular talks, courses and seminars; dissemination of the scientific production of its team through the participation in scientific meetings; international cooperation; organization of workshops and congresses; post-graduate and advanced research. In order to increase its contribution to social and economic development, the CIDMAalso strives for an active participation in multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary projects in cooperation with other research teams. The CIDMA activities are scientifically organized in eight research groups, which we identify next together with the areas of intervention that we are concerned with: - Algebra and Geometry: Category Theory; Logic, Computer Science and Educational Software; Polytopes, Maps, Tilings and Hyperplane Arrangements; Coding Theory and Cryptography. - Complex and Hypercomplex Analysis: Discrete and Fractional Hypercomplex Analysis; Harmonic Analysis over non-commutative structures; Riemann-Hilbert problem and Orthogonal Polynomials; Time-frequency analysis. - Functional Analysis and Applications: Boundary Value Problems and Differential Equations; Functional Analysis and Operator Theory; Integral Equations and Transforms; Applications to other Fields. - Gravitational Geometry and Dynamics: Strong Gravity; Black Holes; Cosmology; Celestial Dynamics. - History of Mathematics: Arithmeticians and mercantile arithmetic in Europe; Mathematical legacy of Portuguese mathematicians; Evolution of fundamental concepts through times; History of Mathematics as teaching aid. - Optimization, Graph Theory and Combinatorics: Billiard Theory; Mathematical Physics and Inverse Problems; Optimization and Operational Research; Spectral Graph Theory and Combinatorics. - Probability and Statistics: Time Series; Entropy and Regularization; Multivariate Analysis, Genomics and Robustness; Applied Statistics. - Systems and Control: Coding theory, systems and control; Calculus of variations and optimal control; Fractional derivatives and integrals; Biomathematics. Additionally, CIDMA has presently the following three Thematic Lines/Strands (TS), which act transversally to the research groups: - GEOMETRIX http://geometrix.web.ua.pt/. - MATEAS - Mathematics: Teaching and Assessment in Higher Education http://mateas.wikidot.com/. - PICS - Inverse Problems and Applications in Health Sciences http://sweet.ua.pt/ukaehler/LtPICS/. And, starting from 2019, we will have the following additional TS: - BIOMATH - Biomathematics. - FTC - From Theory to Computational Tools. - MI - Mathematics for Industry. Since we have international recognition by our peers and systematically rank well in international studies like the U.S. News& World Report 2016 Best Global Universities rankings (powered by Thomson Reuters InCites research solutions), where the area of Mathematics at University of Aveiro obtained the position 45 in Europe and position 128 in the world, we strive to continuously deserve such distinctions. For example, the SWOT analysis performed for the last evaluation and the evaluation itself led us to improve where weaknesses were detected and created a dynamics within CIDMA which we believe can lead us to the restricted group of the top R&D Units in our area. One of the areas of intervention where we have definitely improved is in the interaction with industry and society. The first three TS created were already a reflexion of our concerns in that respect, more on the side of the society, and the new three TS listed above restore somehow the balance with the industry, as can be seen by their descriptions in section 11.1. In that section more examples of our planned actions in this respect can be seen, aswell as some detail more on the fundamental and applied research that we will be concerned with in the coming years.
