Abstract
10.2 Summary in English for general dissemination purposes
The biggest current societal challenges seek to provide answers to questions such as the generalization of access to formal education and training systems, promotion of school achievement, development of inclusive systems or promotion of development in the life cycle, aiming at well-being. The response to these challenges is a concern in many societies worldwide and also in the insertion region of CIEP, the Alentejo, strongly marked by high rates of school failure and dropout, demographic weakness, aging and social and economic vulnerability. Therefore, for the next four years the Center intends to develop knowledge and methodologies that contribute, regionally and globally, to improving learning, social integration and inclusion, the quality of educational organizations and the well-being of individuals, based on research, innovation and transfer of knowledge to society. This path has already been pursued in a sustained manner taking into account the CIEP's solid implementation in the community, the scientific advice it provides to schools and local authorities, community education networks, the numerous training actions it provides and also the dissemination of knowledge resulting from national and international studies, projects and networks.
The Plan of Activities for 2018-2022 brings together the vectors that have been consolidated and conceptualizes future action around two major areas of research: "Education and Educational Policies", more related to the multiple dimensions and processes of education and its structures, and "Development, Inclusion and Well-being", which is more focused on the obstacles and constraints to the development of individuals and groups, acting towards inclusion and well-being. The first one encompasses four research topics – "Teaching, learning, assessment and digital technology”, "Higher education: structures and processes", "Training and professional development" and "Educational policies, territories and institutions" – and the second includes two themes "Development and inclusion" and "Risk, health and well-being".
In this way, research addresses the problems in terms of their complexity and uses a wide intersection of knowledge that results from the expertise accumulated by the core research group of the Center, but also involving a wide range of collaborators from different contexts and scientific areas, improving and enhancing the solution of problems.
CIEP-UE seeks to develop its activity aligned with the guidelines established by the University of Évora in its Strategic Development Plan, especially with its anchor areas definition. Therefore, concerns about regional sustainability, internationalization, but also about research itself, the promotion of digital skills and computational thinking capacity and the promotion of active aging, are identifiable in all areas and ways of working of the Centre.
10.3 Summary in English for evaluation
CIEP presents itself to this evaluation exercise with significant progress regarding the quality, merit, relevance and level of internationalization of the R&D activity with increases in its importance as an organization committed to scientific and social actions of particular relevance to society. There are several evidences of scientific merit of the research team, its international and national recognition and a long and solid path of relationship with the community.
With regard to the increase in scientific production at the international level, particularly publications in international journals, it should be noted that the team has made a continuous investment in this type of publication that has generated positive results.
In addition to the international scientific production, the internationalization dimension has been evident through many other actions: Researchers mobility within Erasmus and visiting professors at foreign universities; Participation in international projects; International networks; Participation in PhD committees in foreign universities; Supervision of foreign postdocs; Co-supervision of PhD students in foreign universities; Supervision of European and “Sandwich PhD” internships; Supervision of visiting professors; Joint authorship with foreign colleagues and editions of international research journals; Membership of editorial board or referee of international journals; Joint organization of international meetings and membership of scientific committees; or, Invited conferences at international meetings.
All these activities have an impact, both at the national level, with the projection of Portugal abroad, as well as at the local level, with the transfer of knowledge and technology.
In regional terms it is worth noting that CIEP contributes to sustainable and inclusive development of Alentejo with impacts trough scientific and technical support given to educational organizations therefore contributing to improve the quality of the services they provide; the studies in the territory in terms of non-formal qualification have a clear contribution to the region in terms of social and economic development; the studies in the area of Higher Education have national and regional impact as they aim to enhance academic achievement, reduce dropout and the change of career direction; in the area of digital technology and its application to education, the work on the introduction of computational thinking, programming and robotics in basic education has been developed in the schools of the region; the research carried out in the scope of psychological and pedagogic processes as facilitators and promoters of educational and social inclusion has been developing innovative methods that generate inclusion, quality of life and well-being also locally; the studies aimed at identifying psychosocial risks for personal development and intervention programmes that enable personal development and well-being to be promoted throughout the life cycle, as well as the study of suicidal behavior, active aging and health promotion are important for a region vulnerable to these factors..
The continued action of the Center's research and intervention mark a continuity between the past and the future. Nevertheless, the plan of activities for 2018-2022 shows a work of internal re-examination and counseling, including the contributes resulting from the appreciation of the Centre’ External Advisory Board.
The Centre therefore continues to guide its action in the search for new knowledge and innovation of the practices, now centered on two major areas of research: one that addresses the multiple dimensions of work itself, in its processes and structures, called Education and Educational Policies; one that studies and acts on the difficulties, obstacles and constraints of the development of people and communities, called Risk, Well-being and Inclusion.
With regard to Education and Educational Policies, it includes 4 research and intervention themes: Teaching, Learning, Assessment and Digital Technology; Higher Education: Structures and Processes; Training and Professional Development; Educational Policies, Territories and Institutions. Regarding Development, Inclusion and Welfare, the following themes are addressed: Development and Inclusion; Risk, Health and Well-being.
In each of these themes, CIEP-UE has, in addition to the research objectives, important objectives of intervention in the community and transfer of knowledge and technology (in particular social technology), as well as the training of social agents in various areas of action: namely formal and non-formal education, and physical, psychic and social health.
The projects that CIEP is developing, has submitted and intends to submit show consistency with the proposed goals and demonstrate the Center’ evolution in prospective terms. Regarding the projects in progress, we highlight the following: “Video-supported education Alliance”; “School Learning Communities Gulbenkian XXI”; “Integrated services to support children and families in situations of vulnerability”. With regard to the projects already submitted and await financing: InCaRa “Early school leaving in Alentejo and Algarve: act to empower and reduce asymmetries”; L&T University “Learning and teaching at the University” (Portugal 2020/FEDER/ FCT). In what has to do with projects to apply: “The university and the future: governance and pedagogical innovation”; “Innovative models of intervention, promoters of inclusion, quality of life and well-being”; “Elaboration of the Education Charter of the Alentejo Region”; “Predictors of Perceived Well-Being Across the Life-Span”; "Psychological variables and suicidality in young adults and community adults”; “Familyinclusion and the process of adapting families to disability”.
