Abstract
10.2 Summary in English for general dissemination purposes
The Centre for Research, Development and Innovation in Tourism (CiTUR) is a Research and Development Unit (R&D) born from the polytechnic subsystem of education in tourism and hospitality. Seventeen schools are linked, involving almost 200 researchers, half of them as ‘integrated’.
In addition to the objectives that are common to the whole academy, polytechnics are expected to generate and disseminate knowledge that can be recognized by society and the business as applicable, in the sense that it can be seen as ready for immediate use on productive processes and / or social intervention.
As key strategic objectives for the next five years, we point out:
1. The exploitation of the expected benefits related with a real national scope institution;
2. The enrolment and the regular participation in international networks, with special attention to the ones related to Europe and to the Portuguese Speaking Countries;
3. The promotion of a more sophisticated academic activity, increasing the quality of the diverse outputs that can characterize the CiTUR activity, namely the organization of scientific events and publications;
4. The maintenance of a close relationship with the Network of Public Institutions of the Polytechnic Higher Education System with Courses in the Tourism Area (RIPTUR), taking advantage of the synergies that this proximity can bring to the fulfilment of both structures’ objectives;
5. To take advantage of and deepen the network of contacts composed by the various public and private stakeholders that are part of the tourism and hospitality cluster, in order to highlight and to make happen an applied and useful research.
Within this context, CiTUR also aims to contribute for sustainable development actions at different territory scales, from local to global challenges, in harmony with the United Nations document “Sustainable Development Goals – 17 Goals to transform our World” (ONU, 2015)”.
In terms of its internal organisation, CiTUR is structured into six regional nodes, based in Coimbra, Estoril, Faro, Funchal, Guarda and Leiria. Crossing these nodes, the Unit considers six thematic research groups. The goals of these groups are necessarily broad, having in mind the diversity of the members that are part of them and the Unit’s youth, which has not yet allowed a collective work practice and a convergence to the research topics that might be considered as strategically more interesting.
1. Tourism Economics and Management
2. Tourism, Hospitality and Restaurants
3. e-Tourism
4. Territory and Tourist Destinations
5. Planning and Management of Tourist Products and Animation
6. Tourism, Culture, Society and Language

1. Tourism Economics and Management. Destination management organizations and companies need to adopt new business models and marketing principles in their management decisions. This research topic – closely linked with the other 5 topics - is focused on 4 main deliverables: develop and capitalization of tourism economics decision support systems for public policy and business planning, efficient management accounting systems, tourism contributions for circular economy, and marketing strategic and operational instruments for business and destination competitiveness.
2. Tourism, Hospitality and Restaurants. Topics to be highlighted: the human resources management, the effects of the new technologies in innovation practices and in their relationship with the human resources. Side by side with hotel management there are specific dimensions of gastronomy, culinary arts and food production that need to be stressed on. It is crucial to understand and to explore niches in the agro-food/food service/food industry sectors that have the potential to generate new innovative products and services underpinned in a safe and health perspective.
3. e-Tourism. It includes applications for business management and tourist destinations. More specialised issues are also welcomed, on so many different topics like helping on risk management, local restaurants (e-menu) or local lodging (e-booking). Hostels and other type of accommodation are now spread all over the country; the contribution of new types of economy, namely the collaborative economy and respective IT platforms, created also a new way to do business.
4. Territory and Tourist Destinations. Tourism is grounded on the creation of destinations with attributes that are acknowledged and appreciated by people outside the area. Despite this research topic has already relevant academic interest, research in this field is still underdeveloped, concerning, particularly, the tourism policy tools adopted by local governments and their impact on local tourism development. On the other hand, for the development of any kind of tourism there is the need of transport and infrastructures; it is important to consider these relations and how the means of transportation can be combined in order to increase the demand for a destination.
5. Planning and Management of Tourist Products and Animation. Tourism resources are understood and lived in a very personalized way. Their scope is diverse and global, from different types of cultural interests to nature. The practice of nature and adventure tourism activities will deserve a special attention, not only because of their sensitivity but because the CiTUR team has tradition and recognition on those topics. The concept of ‘animation’ should allow the authenticity of the experience and the market, entering the concept of leisure management.
6. Tourism, Culture, Society and Language. The large group of the Human and Social Sciences is one of the oldest and most important in what means paying attention and efforts to tourism issues. It includes the cultural and historical dimension, the sociological and anthropological approach to tourism, and the “tourism products” (e.g. culture and religion, heritage, literature, gastronomy and a large range of the so-called ‘new forms of tourism’). Ethics and social responsibility in tourism are no more emergent topics, because they won the status of being considered as consolidated fields of research. Language practices locally lived is one of the main attractions of tourism and its mobility.
