Abstract

10.2 Summary in English for general dissemination purposes CFisUC's main mission is to perform scientific and technological research in physics and multidisciplinary areas at the interface with physics, pursuing international standards of scientific excellence. It collaborates directly with the higher education institutions to which its members are affiliated to, providing teaching and training in Physics. Furthermore, its mission includes the promotion of physics education and scientific culture and the provision of R&D services to the community. During the next five years CFisUC will consolidate and strengthen its impact on its areas of expertise: neutron stars and hadron phenomenology, lattice quantum chromodynamics, muon spectroscopy, electrical, optical and magnetic properties of matter (including novel topological materials, multiferroic materials, multifunctional magnetic materials, and dielectric oxides for solar cells), development of photovoltaic cells, hydrogen storage, catalysts for fuel cells inthe context of clean energies, and biological physics. CFisUC's toolbox is and will be comprehensive, including theoretical, experimental and computational methods. Synergies created by our multidisciplinary know-how will allow for the development and/or increase of competences in emergent areas such as ab-initio computational materials design. CFisUC fosters national and international collaborations. It participates in scientific and technological infrastructures of international relevance and in European networks such as the COST actions. It cooperates with European High-Performance Computing infrastructure projects. We have as a priority to strengthen the ongoing collaborations and to start new international and national collaborations with other research units and universities. CFisUC is strongly committed to the high-level training of young physicists both at the undergraduate and postgraduate level. CFisUC participates in the coordination of several FCT Doctoral Programs, the MSc and PhD programs in Physics of the UC and the joint UC-UAveiro PhD program in History of Sciences and Science Education. We organise the annual Advanced School "Computational Biology@UC". Transfer of knowledge and technology to society is and will continue to be one of our major goals. CFisUC collaborates with the UC, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site, studying the History of Science in Coimbra and contributing to the rehabilitation of buildings and equipments. Members of CFisUC are responsible for the school of excellence in Physics "Quark!" for high-school students, for the coordination of the National Physics Olympiad, for the coordination of "Rómulo - Centro de Ciência Viva" of the UC and for the Museum of Science of the UC. We maintain a direct collaboration with industry, being these activities aligned with the strategic priorities of the Research and Innovation Strategies for Smart Specialisations (RIS3) of the Centre of Portugal. 10.3 Summary in English for evaluation CFisUC's main mission is to perform scientific and technological research in physics and multidisciplinary areas at the interface with physics, pursuing international standards of scientific excellence. CFisUC's toolbox is and will be comprehensive, including theoretical, experimental and computational methods. Synergies created by our multidisciplinary know-how will allow for the development and/or increase of competences in emergent areas such as ab-initio computational materials design. CFisUC fosters national and international collaborations, these collaborations being central to its success. It participates in scientific and technological infrastructures of international relevance and in European networkssuch as the COST actions. It cooperates with European High-Performance Computing infrastructure projects. We have as a priority to strengthen the ongoing collaborations and to start new international and national collaborations with other research units and universities. CFisUC is and will be strongly committed to the high-level training of young scientists and other professionals both at the undergraduate and post-graduate level. At the post-graduate level, CFisUC will continue to participate in the coordination of the FCT Doctoral Programs ChemMat, DAEPHYS and IDPASC, the MSc and PhD programs in Physics of the University of Coimbra, and the joint UC-UAveiro PhD program on History of Sciences and Science Education. Some of the MSc and PhD projects are and will be developed in collaboration with industry. Students at all levels will be involved in the research projects of the CFisUC through the offer of short summer projects and the award of short term grants to the best students. The annual Advanced School "Computational Biology@UC" will continue to be organised by CFisUC, as well as some of the COST actions schools/workshops and working group meetings. Transfer of knowledge and technology to society is and will continue to be one of our major goals. This will be undertaken at different levels: contributing to the physics education in middle and high schools, promoting scientific culture at large, collaborating with the UC, which is an UNESCO World Heritage site, studying the History of Science in Coimbra and contributing to the rehabilitation of buildings and equipments, and collaborating with industry. Our work is aligned with the strategic priorities of the Research and Innovation Strategies for Smart Specialisations (RIS3) of the Centre of Portugal and the Sustainability Initiative of the UC. Members of CFisUC are responsible for the school of excellence in Physics "Quark!" for high-school students from all over the country, for the coordination of the National Physics Olympiad, for the coordination of "Rómulo - Centro de Ciência Viva" of the UC and for the Museum of Science of the UC. The main scientific goals of CFisUC are reflected in its structure. The Centre is organised in four flexible working groups (WG) and three transfer working groups (TWG). It is governed by the Coordinator, the Steering Committee and the Scientific Committee. It counts on the UC for its secretariat and financial management.
