Abstract
10.2 Summary in English for general dissemination purposes
The Center for Research, Training, Innovation and Intervention in Sport (CIFI2D) is a research unit hosted in the Faculty of Sport of the University of Porto. The CIFI2D develops its activity in the field of Sport Sciences and its interfaces and aims to carry out research and training of researchers in this field, as well as transfer and apply the existing knowledge for the different contexts and crafts of Sport. In this sense, it performs: i) research in several areas of Sport and related; ii) training and training of postgraduate students, specialists and technicians; iii) continuous education and scientific diffusion; iv) consulting, evaluation and diagnosis in several areas; and v) services and interventions in the community.
Although its scientific framework is in the Sports Sciences, CIFI2D also uses other disciplines that can contribute to the enrichment of the multidisciplinary analysis of its research objects. In fact, recognizing Sport as a complex cultural and social reality, which requires systematic study to analyze problems with a multidimensional and multidisciplinary nature, CIFI2D considers it essential to promote the interaction and sharing of approaches from different but complementary perspectives and positions, benefiting to the effect of an extensive and diversified network of national and international collaborators.
The interests of CIFI2D are diverse, ranging from cultural and social issues that shape Sport in its scope, to structural and functional issues associated with the organization, management and evaluation of the specific teaching / learning processes of Sport in different contexts (school, performance, recreation and leisure, or re-education and rehabilitation), not forgetting the interactions between the actors (i.e., athletes, coaches, parents, staff management, referees, spectators). The CIFI2D is also concerned with issues related to the key players in the sports process (ie, athletes, coaches, referees and managers), seeking to study the variables that allow maximizing the levels of performance, satisfaction and well-being of participants in the sports scene, but also the extent and depth of the benefits of such participation.
To this end, CIFI2D will invest in strengthening the material and financial conditions for high-quality research (applying to that programs) and, in particular, human resources; it is also seen as crucial to increase the opportunities for scientific employment positions for the young people who are being graduated. In addition, CIFI2D considers it fundamental to strengthen and expand collaboration with prestigious colleagues and national and international institutions and disseminate the results of its scientific activity in the most important scientific journals, not forgetting, however, the transfer of knowledge to the community.
10.3 Summary in English for evaluation
Although its scientific framework is in the Sports Sciences, CIFI2D also uses other disciplines that can contribute to the enrichment of the multidisciplinary analysis of its research objects. In fact, recognizing Sport as a complex cultural and social reality, which requires systematic study to analyze problems with a multidimensional and multidisciplinary nature, CIFI2D considers it essential to promote the interaction and sharing of approaches from different but complementary perspectives and positions, benefiting to the effect of an extensive and diversified network of national and international collaborators.
The interests of CIFI2D are diverse, ranging from cultural and social issues that shape Sport in its scope, to structural and functional issues associated with the organization, management and evaluation of the specific teaching / learning processes of Sport in different, not forgetting the interactions between the sport actors.
However, in an effort to maximize its structural and functional resources, CIFI2D has decided that in the next period of 2018-2022 priority will be given to concentrating its attention and efforts on research into a set of more restricted of problems that are inscribed between the main subjects and subjects of interest of the national and international scientific community.
According to its mission the CIFI2D strategic plan for 2018-2022 identifies the following key priorities: i) research, production and dissemination of knowledge; ii) education and training of postgraduate students and specialists; iii) consulting, evaluation and diagnosis; and iv) services and interventions in the community.
Regarding the 1st strategic priority (i.e., research, production and dissemination of scientific knowledge) CIFI2D intends to maintain its multidisciplinary approach focusing the identification and development of excellence in sports contexts, the biophysical determinants of sports performance, the analysis of the dynamics of athletes and teams, the quality of the training of sports agents, and the benefits of sport in physical and psychological well-being of its practitioners, as well as its use for the promotion of the personal and social responsibility of children and young people, particularly those involved in situations of social risk. It's also a priority to disseminate the obtained results through the publication of articles in peer-reviewed journals and by participation in relevant scientific/professional conferences. Furthermore, the CIFI2D also aims to directly communicate with end-users, citizens, civil society organizations, industry and policy makers taking advantage from the current research projects and applying for new ones, supported by external funding sources, either at national and international level, allocating post-doctoral fellows and/or researchers to new projects in order to raise the research unit's critical mass.
Moreover, CIFI2D will strengthen its national and international relationships in the referred areas and will continue to promote and support its members' publication and participation in scientific meetings.
For the 2nd strategic priority (i.e., education and training of postgraduate students and specialists), CIFI2D will continue to offer advanced education within its Doctoral Program in Sport Sciences aiming to help students to achieve the highest research standards, training them to create and disseminate good scientific knowledge, guided by an ethical attitude and relevant to community. CIFI2D will also run the Master programs of Teaching Physical Education at Basic and Secondary System, Sport Management, High Performance Training, Children and Youth Sport and Sport Psychology and Human Development. The CIFI2D will continue to promote the co-supervision of the PhD students by international experts as well to stimulate international mobility of its students and members with other international schools/ research units of excellence. To reach that, CIFI2D will try to increase the number of full-time students supported by grants.
Regarding the 3rd strategic priority (i.e., consulting, evaluation and diagnosis), CIFI2D will continue to collaborate with the sport, educational and business system, taking advantage of its member's competencies and reputation to provide services of consultation and evaluation in developing new products (e.g., footwear), assessment and control of training (of teams or individual athletes), or in the evaluation and promotion of healthy lifestyles (in schools, communities and worksites). In that sense, CIFI2D will continue to encourage and funding its member's participation in society board and leadership committees in national and international organizations and institutions.
Finally, regarding the 4th strategic priority (i.e., services and interventions in the community), CIFI2D will keep to coordinate existing community intervention projects in the field of youth sports (eg Handball Schools, School of Movement), but also using sport as a means of promoting the personal and social responsibility of at-risk youth (with the Second Chance Project) or with the objective of improving the quality of life of people with physical (eg, cancer) or mental health (eg, depression). Furthermore, CIFI2D will establish new partnerships with schools and municipalities engaging PhD and master students with the supervisions of CIFI2D's integrated members.
