Abstract

10.2 Summary in English for general dissemination purposes LAETA is an Associated Laboratory in the fields of Energy, Transportation and Aeronautics, which also addresses other emerging fields where its scientific knowledge, grounded on Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, can be applied. LAETA includes 4 management institutions (INEGI/University of Porto, IDMEC/IST-University of Lisbon, ADAI/University of Coimbra, AeroG/University of Beira Interior) and 32 participating institutions, located in all regions of continental Portugal. The core of LAETA is a dynamic, connected community of 281 integrated researchers, 154 collaborators and 151 PhD students. LAETA aims to play a fundamental role in the future of research, innovation and advanced education in areas related to Mechanical Engineering by performing fundamental and applied research that contributes to scientific development, by promoting innovation and technology transfer, and by reinforcing the conditions for curricular innovation and advanced training at all participating Universities. LAETA objectives for 2019-2022 include: i) to increase the number of research and innovation projects steaming from highly competitive international calls funded by both public and private sectors; ii) to reinforce its role as the national key player in supporting industrial innovation, and one of the international key players, performing activities at all stages of the value-chain, from basic research to pilot demonstration; iii) to address the main societal challenges related to LAETA scientific knowledge; and iv) to increase the critical mass of highly qualified human resources by setting the stage for the creation of scientific jobs in Portugal, ensuring appropriate conditions for the professional development of young researchers. The core scientific knowledge of LAETA is consolidated in 5 Research Groups (RGs): Materials and Manufacturing Processes; Structures and Mechanical Systems; Intelligent Systems and Control; Energy, Environment and Sustainability; and Biomechanics. LAETA will strengthen and increase its core scientific competencies through internal and external collaborations, by anticipating required advances in science and technology, and by facilitating the pursuit of new research avenues. The RGs contribute to the activities planned in a set of Thematic Lines (TLs) intended to tackle selected societal challenges in the fields of Sustainable Energy, Surface Transports, Space and Aeronautics, Advanced Production, Healthcare and Safety and Emerging Technologies. The TLs activities and the participation in national and international networks and forums contribute to increase the number of international projects coordinated by LAETA researchers. The impact of the work conducted by LAETA is reinforced by the publication of scientific papers in international journals, by actively participating in the organization of prestigious scientific events and by collaborating with players of the economic sectors related to LAETA core competencies. 10.3 Summary in English for evaluation LAETA aims to play a fundamental role in the future of research, innovation and advanced education in areas related to Mechanical Engineering by performing fundamental and applied research that contributes to scientific development, by promoting innovation and technology transfer, and by reinforcing the conditions for curricular innovation and advanced training at all the participating Universities. During 2019-2022 LAETA objectives include i) to increase the number of research and innovation projects steaming from highly competitive international calls funded by both the public and private sectors; ii) to reinforce its role as the national key player, and one of the international key players, that support industrial innovation by performing activities at the different stages of the value-chain, from basic research and applied to integration and demonstration; iii) to address the main societal challenges related to the scientific knowledge existing in LAETA; iv) to increase the critical mass of highly qualified human resources by setting the stage for the creation of scientific jobs in Portugal, ensuring appropriate conditions for the professional development of young researchers. LAETA will be organized in a matrix structure where the Research Groups (RGs) consolidate the core scientific knowledge in the following 5 areas: i) Materials and Manufacturing Processes (MMP), ii) Structures and Mechanical Systems (SMS), iii) Intelligent Systems and Control (ISC), iv) Energy, Environment and Sustainability (EES) and v) Biomechanics (BM). LAETA will strengthen and increase its core scientific competencies through internal and external collaborations, by anticipating required advances in science and technology, and by facilitating the pursuit of new research avenues. The RGs will contribute to the activities planned for a set of Thematic Lines (TLs) that will tackle selected societal challenges in the fields of sustainable energy, surface transports, space and aeronautics, advanced production, healthcare and safety, and emerging technologies. Collaborative programmes are planned to support the activity of each TL to promote additional synergies, the increase of critical mass, and the multidisciplinary approach required to address complex problems associated with the previous areas. These programmes will benefit from the collaboration of Post-Doctoral researchers with new contracts, and will provide appropriate contexts to PhD students enrolled in the several doctoral programmes coordinated by LAETA researchers. The work conducted in the different TLs and the increased participation in national and international networks and forums will collectively contribute to the goal of increasing the number of international research projects coordinated by LAETA researchers. Innovation and technology transfer, being fundamental for the sustainable economic growth, is an important responsibility of any research institution. LAETA will reinforce the dissemination of the work conducted by promoting the publication of scientific papers in international journals, and by actively participating in the organization of prestigious scientific events. A sound balance between science push and technology-pull activities will be ensured by identifying and highlighting to the relevant sectors of the economy the potential benefits of the research conducted, by anticipating industrial needs, by actively interacting with the existing industrial partners, and by increasing the number of industrial collaborations at national and international levels. To implement an effective management of the Associated Laboratory, to steer the activities conducted in the research groups and thematic lines while keeping the scientific independence of the researchers, and to ensure the accountability of the use of the resources, LAETA will have a board with representatives of all the management institutions. The board will be supported by a steering committee that will meet on a regular basis, and will benefit from the feedback provided by the scientific and industrial External Advisory Board.
