Abstract

10.2 Summary in English for general dissemination purposes The Strategic Project (SP) of INET-md is based on the articulation of the following components: 1. Transdisciplinary research on music, dance and other modes of expressive culture focusing on current issues in the fields represented by the Institute's Research Groups (RG). 2. Training of doctoral students and young scholars 3. Collaborative partnerships with local communities, national and international institutions, scholars, artists and policy-makers towards a more democractic construction of knowledge with goals of social responsibility. 4. Research on music and dance related to colonial pasts and postcolonial contexts. especially in areas with deep historical connections to Portugal, contributing with new knowledge and epistemologies. 5. Creation and artistic research on music and dance performance and composition, contributing with new frameworks for the performing arts. 6. Research on music sound, including the physical principles underlying its production by musical instruments. 7. Curating, archiving and making accessible through an open access online data base, the sound, audiovisual and written sources and research results. These components are detailed in the research agendas of the six RGs: Ethnomusicology and Popular Music Studies; Historical and Cultural Studies in Music; Dance Studies; Education and Music in the Community; Creation, Performance and Artistic Research; Music Acoustics and Sound Studies. All six RGs are distributed within and across four institutions of higher education: Nova University of Lisbon/FCSH, University of Lisbon/FMH, University of Aveiro/ DeCA/ and the ESE/Polytechnic Institute of Porto. The goals of the SP intersect with the objectives of INET-md, continuing the work previously carried out, and exploring new research priorities. In addition, the unit will continue working collaboratively with local communities, national and international institutions, scholars, artists, and policy-makers toward the shared production of knowledge, and its dissemination through open access databases. Ongoing research themesMemory, heritage and the impact of heritagization on music and dance practices. Music, dance, migration and diasporas. Popular music and dance, media, technologies and Cultural Industries. Music, Dance and Power. Music, dance and expressive culture in the Lusophone world and other places with which Portugal shared a common past, from postcolonial and decolonial perspectives. Music and Dance Creation, Performance and Artistic research. Historical Approaches to Music Performance. Music and dance education in formal, non-formal and informal contexts. Music, dance and social inclusion. New Research Themes The physical and psycho-acoustic principles underlying the production and perception of musical sounds. Music, sound and movement cultures in urban contexts. Music and tourism. Music cognition and emotion. 10.3 Summary in English for evaluation The Strategic Project (SP) of INET-md is based on the articulation of the following components: 1. All six RGs are distributed within and across four institutions of higher education: NOVA/FCSH, ULisboa/FMH, UA/ DeCA/ and the ESE/IPP. Ongoing research themes Memory, heritage and the impact of heritagization on music and dance practices. Memory as social practice embodied through music and dance performance; how music and dance articulate knowledge about the past; how expressive practices are mobilized to configure social and personal identities. Collaborative work with communities of practitioners focusing on heritage, some leading to the inscription of local practices in the national ICH inventory and in UNESCO's representative list of ICH, but especially contributing with new critical readings of heritagization processes and their impact on music and dance practice. Music, dance, migration and diasporas - In the contemporary post-colonial world, the dynamics related to people in movement through migrant or diasporic processes, generated new soundscapes and changes in music and dance. This topic will continue to be studied by several INET researchers especially focused on issues like identity, emotions, recontextualization, deterritorialization and resignification of music and dance. Popular Music and Dance, Media, Technologies and Cultural Industries. The history of popular music in articulation with the media, technologies and music industries. The human body and its presence as a social and psychological entity that produces meaning and affect. The understanding of the close connection between dance and music, through motion capture and generation of sound environments. Music, Dance and Power. The relationship between music, dance and power is an important issue highlighted by different fields of the social sciences and humanities. In INET-md this issue intersects all the RGs and addresses problems related to colonial policy, totalitarian regimes, race, gender and empowerment, among others. Music, dance and expressive culture in the Lusophone world and other places with which Portugal shared a common past, from postcolonial and decolonial perspectives. Research carried out by INET-md since 1987, has been contributing to better understand the presence of music in colonial oppressive contexts, to increase knowledge related to colonial differences and to promote decolonial ways of understanding music and dance through dialogue and interlocution. Music and Dance Creation, Performance and Artistic research. The inclusion of music performance, composition and dance in the academy generated a vibrant discussion on how creation and music and dance performance can be addressed as research. Therefore, artistic research is one of the most important issues to which musicians and dancers of INET-md are dedicated in articulation with other important research centres throughout the world where this is a growing epistemological field. Music and dance education in formal, non-formal and informal contexts. Research in new developments in music and dance pedagogies continues to be part of the agenda of INET-md researchers working in this domain. This also connects with socially engaged research, including music in prisons, and other contexts with people living in vulnerable situations. Historical Approaches to Music Performance. Studying the history of musical interpretation and performance practices; recuperating and presenting historically informed performances of early music especially by Portuguese composers whose work is archived but rarely performed. New Research Themes The physical and psycho-acoustic principles underlying the perception of music sound and its production by musical instruments, their construction processes and optimization. Music in urban contexts. The articulation of music, heritage and tourism, urban sound environments in the contemporary city, the use of music in processes of touristification. Music cognition and emotion. The expansion of research on music and emotions combining field research and laboratory experiments using theoretical frameworks from the cognitive sciences and anthropology.
