Abstract

ALICE is the Associate Laboratory (AL) for Innovation in Chemical Engineering extending its area of expertise to other areas such as Biological, Environmental, Materials and Energy Engineering. ALICE is a consortium of two R&D Units classified as Excellent, LEPABE - Laboratory of Process Engineering, Environment, Biotechnology and Energy and CEFT - Center for the Study of Transport Phenomena, and the Associated Laboratory LSRE-LCM- Laboratory of Separation and Reaction Engineering - Laboratory of Catalysis and Materials, and aims to combine synergistically the respective areas of excellence with international recognition and a high potential for fundamental science and technological transfer. The main location ofALICE is the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) and its Department of Chemical Engineering, with members from the Mechanical Engineering Department (Fluids and Energy) and also some integrated members from the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria. ALICE pretends to be the largest Portuguese AL in the Chemical Engineering area, with 165 PhD researchers, who over the past 20 years have contributed to consolidate the relevant international position in Chemical Engineering. ALICE's mission is to contribute to scientific knowledge and its technological applications developing innovative processes and products, responding to societal challenges and industry development. In parallel, it intends to be the driving force for advanced researchers training governed by the highest standards of scientific excellence and also to strengthen the leadership position and the international recognition in research interdisciplinary in Chemical Engineering and Bioprocesses, Energy, Materials and Environment. ALICE is organized into 5 Thematic Lines: 1) ChE.IND - Chemical Industry: reaction and separation processes; fluids, rheology, mixing and process analytics, modelling and optimization; 2) ChE.BIO - Bioprocesses: biofilms and biofluids; marine and food biotechnology; 3) ChE.MAT - Materials: catalysis, photocatalysis and carbon materials; polymeric materials and composites; micro and nanostructures; 4) ChE.ENE - Energy: energy efficiency and thermal comfort; energy from renewable sources and hydrogen from renewable sources; 5) ChE.ENV – Environment: monitoring and risk assessment; advanced water and gas treatment; endogenous waste and resources.
