Abstract
The three R&D units of IMS, CQE, CQC and CIQUP, excel in the scientific area of chemical sciences. Unlike R&D models that are mainly focused on a single facet or application of the chemical sciences, the IMS units are involved in a plethora of sub-areas ranging from single-molecule processes to functional materials, from specialty chemicals to heavy-duty commodities, from environmental concerns to health-related matters, from fundamental to applied research, from issues related to the awarenessof the Chemical Sciences to their communication.
In terms of innovation the primary objective of the Institute of Molecular Sciences is to provide our country with the molecular-based tools that are necessary to solve in an interdisciplinary way urgent societal problems in a 5- or 10-years time horizon. The way to do that is captured by the mapping of the research conducted at IMS to five overlapping and cooperating thematic lines.
The five IMS Thematic Lines (TLs) are: MATsoft (Functional materials and soft matter); MEDlife (Medicinal, biological and biophysical chemistry for health); H2Oen2 (Technologies for water, environment and energy); SYNcat (Synthesis, catalysis and chemical processes); and CHEMfocus (Fundamentals and awareness). The different topics contained within each TL are well embedded in the strategic roadmaps of the 2050 agenda released by the EU.
The five Thematic lines will tackle problems along a general streamline, initiated with the design, modeling and synthesis of new molecules and materials that can subsequently contribute towards a clean environment, energy sustainability, or a healthy life. Every TL reflects the vocation of IMS and its R&D units to develop a novel solution from an early stage of low technological readiness level (TRL1) to its validation in an industrial relevant environment at TRL6.
Innovation at IMS is met by other goals aligned with public policies, namely technology transfer, internationalisation, and human resources advanced training and career advancement. The new complementary funding as Associate Laboratory will be used to maintain and develop its level of Scientific Excellence and expand its overall performance in terms of funding sources diversification by attracting the best, most dynamic researchers into permanent key positions.
