Abstract

Animal and veterinary science is instrumental in meeting the challenges posed by the United Nations' sustainable development objectives for 2020-30, the FAO and WHO mission statements, and the Ministry of Agriculture's agenda for innovation (Portugal 2020-30). Despite its relevance, an Associate Laboratory dedicated to research in these fields is so far inexistent. The creation of the Associate Laboratory for Animal and Veterinary Science (AL4AnimalS) aims to synergistically structure the activity of the 3 existing national R&D centres (CIISA, CECA and CECAV) exclusively dedicated to animal and veterinary science, to concertedly produce high quality science, which would establish it as preferential partner to support the public policies to address pressing scientific, public and animal health, environmental, social and economic challenges. Grounded on key partnerships (INIAV, INSA, DGAV) and an extensive network of collaborations, AL4AnimalS will develop 3 thematic lines. In Green Animal Production, the challenge of sustainable animal production is met, with respect for animal welfare and the environment, simultaneously promoting consumer health, helping to improve the competitiveness of the livestock sector and valuing traditional products. In Emergent Infectious Diseases and Zoonosis, we aim to respond to the challenge of proactively controlling zoonosis and emergent animal diseases, where climate change may significantly increase their potential for emergence and/or spread, through innovation in diagnostics and vaccine development. In Comparative and Translational Medicine and Biotechnology, we meet the challenge of innovating therapeutic solutions, in animal medicine and animal models of human disease, involving preclinical and clinical trials. The team's excellent R&D track record demonstrates its ability to respond to these challenges, to raise external funding and attract scientific talent to Portugal. AL4AnimalS puts forward a simple, effective and representative governance model, proposes to create 27 new permanent PhDs positions in a gradual, sustained way, with scope for career development and performance-related remuneration differentiation. By creating scientific employment and implementing transparent and merit-based recruitment of researchers onan international level, and producing world-leading impactful science, AL4AnimalS stands out to respond to the challenges of sustainable development of mankind.
