Abstract

Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde - Associate Laboratory (i3S-AL) is the consolidation of a Research Unit already recognized as top-level in the latest national evaluations. Resulting from the merger of two former ALs – IBMC.INEB and Ipatimup –, i3S-AL also stands out for its key collaboration with UPorto and the major hospitals in the region. We nurture an environment favorable for the development of disruptive and innovative research, as well as for the translation of discoveries to the clinic, which has established the institute as a major international player in health sciences and technologies. Our research is organized into three programs addressing current, pressing societal and health challenges: cancer, infectious diseases, neurologic disorders, and regenerative medicine. Our approach spans fundamental questions regarding living systems, mechanisms underlying disease, and the development of novel diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. Our mission is aligned with key public policies in five main domains: i) excellence and internationalization, namely through publications, their impact and by expanding international networks; ii) cooperation, sharing and development of infrastructures, which provide unique scientific equipment and expertise to academia, industry and the health sector; iii) development of human capital, mobility and employability of graduate students and researchers by providing training opportunities in an overachieving environment; iv) a strong liaison to society through clinical initiatives that provide molecular diagnostics for cancer, neurodegenerative and infectious diseases, and also through an extensive outreach and educational program; v) economic valorization by growing partnerships with industry and the health sector, patenting and licensing research results. i3S-AL is fully committed to recruiting outstanding researchers and technicians, in line with public policies, and we rely on our proven capacity to draw international funding from diverse sources, including the European Union. i3S-AL is a research cluster within a rich and dynamic ecosystem striving to advance training and scientific breakthroughs, while consolidating several domains of the national and European public policies for science. By covering the full cycle from molecule to patient, it is spearheading innovation and raising the profile of Life and Health Sciences.
