Abstract

The Laboratory of Robotics and Engineering Systems (LARSyS) was established as an Associate Laboratory in 2001 to conduct fundamental and applied research in engineering technologies relevant for industrial applications and to meet societal challenges. LARSyS brings together 124 integrated researchers from 4 research units of IST: the Institute for Systems and Robotics (ISR), the Center for Innovation, Technology and Policy Research (IN+), the Marine Environment and Technology Center (MARETEC), and the Interactive Technologies Institute (ITI). The key thrust of LARSyS activity is threefold: research and development, advanced training and technology transfer and outreach activities. From inception, LARSyS is committed to scientific employment, currently hosting 44 (36%) doctoral researchers with work contracts, in addition to 12 post-docs and 68 faculty members working in several academic institutions. LARSyS has a high level of internationalization with 14 integrated international members (11%) and substantial involvement in several international doctoral programs (140 PhD students) in collaboration with leading academic institutions. LARSyS is committed to pursuing interdisciplinary research and innovation, structured in five thematic lines to address societal challenges and support public policies: OCEANS exploration and exploitation, URBAN sustainability, AIR aeronautics and space systems, LIFE engineering for and from life sciences, and INTERACTION with cognitive robots and enhancing the human experience. These thematic lines support Portugal's public policies, in particular on CLIMATE CHANGE, DEMOGRAPHY AND INEQUALITY and DIGITAL SOCIETY. These impacts are corroborated by several success cases, including grazing for sustainability, advanced methods and technologies for environmental mapping and ocean dynamics, urban twins for sustainability, and biomedical technologies transferred from the lab to clinical applications. In addition, these activities have had a significant impact on technology transfer and the economy, having given rise to more than twenty spinoff companies and collaboration with three COLABs. This proposal supports the application of LARSYS to retain the status of associated laboratory, continuing its longstanding tradition of attracting and retaining talent to Portugal. The LARSyS novel career development framework is sustained by a 10-year track record of 7M€ yearly competitive funding, multiplying 5x the base FCT funding.
