Abstract

Considering the research units involved and their social, scientific and international impact, IN2PAST Lab is positioned to be the future reference Associate Laboratory for the study, dissemination and appreciation of cultural heritage, in both its tangible and intangible dimensions. IN2PAST will foster an intensive collaborative relationship between academic, laboratory-based, theoretical and empirical research, as well as innovative practices, drawing from a diverse network of domestic cultural institutions and facilities. Taking into account the ‘R&I Agenda for Culture and Cultural Heritage’, the creation of IN2PAST is a milestone in the effective implementation of Portugal’s scientific and technological policy. Researching the past of territories and populations, as well as current modes of using those pasts, IN2PAST Lab will be a fundamental instrument for research and innovation aimed not only at the identification and safeguarding of cultural heritage, but also at the promotion of an inclusive cultural identity and civic memory. Responding to the aspirations for cultural, social and environmental development of different cities and regions, the Laboratory intervention will have short and mid-term effects on the renewal of the culture-based economy, tourism and leisure, as well as on the development and operationalisation of public policies; in the long-term, IN2PAST will impact the cultural qualification of territories and populations. IN2PAST brings together seven research units with a wide territorial scope and a unique multidisciplinary team in Portugal. This will result in a scope effect and in a transdisciplinary approach that add new competitive assets to the accrued experience already demonstrated by these units in regard to competitive and diverse fundraising, both domestically and internationally, geared towards strategic and fundamental research, scientific consulting and postgraduate training. IN2PAST scientific ambition and public impact will be accompanied by the career consolidation of a group of excellent researchers in the fields of heritage studies, conservation, arts and humanities. During the first five years, the Laboratory will hire 34 researchers with permanent or open-ended contracts through international competitive calls (22 of which in the first year, 9 in the second year, and 3 in the following years). The current multinational research team already reflects IN2PAST’s international vision and talent-hiring ability.
