Abstract
As a philological objective, the aim is to delve into the study of the valuable cultural heritage preserved in the libraries and archives of Bragança, which are at risk of being forgotten, particularly those related to foreign cultures that attest to the daily life of outsiders on the border. This includes two ancient collections (7th-20th centuries) comprising around 7500 printed volumes and ancient manuscripts, culturally centralising the traditional cross-border peripheral region.
Regarding the computational objective, the purpose is to create software capable of conducting intelligent reading to label and relate the contents of the texts. It is important to highlight that digital reading (distant reading) does not replace traditional reading (close reading) but facilitates its cataloguing. Distant reading is a new approach in humanities studies that applies computational methods to literary data, derived mainly from large archives that need to be digitised. With the help of AI, themes, plotlines, and even summaries of each volume can be automatically extracted.
Rethinking the geographical aspect in cross-border literary studies in 2024 aligns with the latest bilateral legal texts between Portugal and Spain, as referenced. O Tratado de Amizade e Cooperação includes in Article 5 cooperation in the field of language, education, and culture, which on the one hand focuses on cooperation in higher education and open access to scientific publications, and on the other, in a somewhat utopian yet appealing manner, on mutual historical, artistic, and cultural knowledge through various cultural and artistic facilities. Similarly, Articles 7 and 9 encourage various cross-border digital infrastructures. Furthermore, the Estratégia Comum de Desenvolvimento Transfronteiriço focuses on promoting both language for the teaching of Portuguese as a Foreign Language and Spanish as a Foreign Language, and enriching exchanges of teachers and students, as well as tangible and intangible heritage, in libraries, artists, and creators, to facilitate cultural accessibility [ElTra23].
The representation of society and mentalities, the creation of discourses and imaginaries, the construction of identities and alterities, and the reflection of ways of life and socio-cultural habits entail a greater and better understanding of the heritage value of border territories. The transfer of historical knowledge through book culture and real literary education, thanks to Digital Humanities, Artificial Intelligence, and digital citizenship competence, contributes to cultural diversity, to peaceful coexistence, conflict prevention, a space where literature plays a crucial role [DoBraSan23]. In this way, it empowers people to foster the sustainable development of human creative, linguistic, and ethical potential, both erudite and folkloric.
