Abstract
The Centre of Statistics and its Applications (CEAUL) is based at the Department of Statistics and Operations Research of the Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon. Established in 1975 by Tiago de Oliveira, CEAUL plays a central role in Portugal as the only center dedicated exclusively to methodological research in the major areas of Probability, Statistics, and Stochastic Processes, along with their applications. It is an interdisciplinary center where fundamental research is combined withapplied research in diverse domains such as Life and Health Sciences, Natural and Environmental Sciences, and Social Sciences (particularly in Financial Risk). The policy followed by CEAUL has been to foster strong connections with other areas and scientific domains. In this regard, it regularly hosts seminars, courses, and meetings, actively promoting the field of Statistics.
In a broad sense, Statistics is the study of uncertainty present in phenomena where random mechanisms play a significant role. Statisticians are scientists who develop tools to measure this type of uncertainty and quantify the risks associated with decision-making in uncertain contexts. Consequently, Statistics plays a crucial role in problems where the main ingredient is the inherent variability leading to associated uncertainty.
As a relatively young discipline, Statistics saw its greatest developments from the mid-20th century onwards. However, with the advent of computers and the current large-scale data collection and storage capacity, not only has the original paradigm of Statistics been rapidly changing, but also the support of statisticians is increasingly needed to provide an adequate response to problems arising in a wide variety of research and scientific development activities. Thus, the strategy of this Unit is to (1) keep up with the latest advances in the scientific domain of Statistics and continue fundamental research in its areas of excellence, developing new methodologies and techniques to transfer the use of the most up-to-date knowledge in collaboration with researchers from other scientific fields; (2) integrate national and international projects of interdisciplinary nature; (3) participate in Society, providing scientific support to Industry, Commerce, Services, and Administration; (4) promote advanced training activities through participation in doctoral programs and specialization courses in emerging areas of Statistics; (5) promote scientific initiation and integration of young researchers.
To implement the proposed strategy, CEAUL has 39 integrated researchers from 17 Universities and Polytechnic Institutes of the Country, 10 PhD students, and 56 collaborators, some of whom belong to other Research Units in the areas of Mathematics and Environmental, Life, and Health Sciences.
Such diversity demonstrates the prestige and attractiveness of CEAUL in Portugal and abroad.
