Abstract

The Center of Mathematics (CMAT) is a research unit of the University of Minho (UM), with a Pole at the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD). This partnership puts CMAT in a privileged position at the national level for the creation of new partnerships with Mathematics research units in Northern Spain and, in particular, in Galicia. CMAT aims to develop and promote research activity covering a large range of fundamental and applied mathematical areas. CMAT aims also to address emerging scientific challenges that have a societal impact and contribute to social and regional development. The Unit is composed of 59 Integrated Researchers and 24 PhD Students, fulfilling certain scientific requirements. The team also includes 14 Collaborator Researchers from other institutions with excellent curricula in Mathematics. CMAT is structured in four research groups gathering researchers from fundamental and applied mathematics: Algebra, Logic and Computation; Analysis and Applications; Geometry, Topology and Applications; and Statistics, Applied Probability and Operational Research. Areas of application include Computer Science, Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Finance, Physics, and Health Sciences. The plan of activities proposed for the period 2025-29 is supported by a dynamic team and covers several domains, including: Algebraic Topology, Biomathematics, Differential Equations, Differential and Discrete Geometry, Diophantine Equations, Dynamical Systems, Extreme Value Theory, History of Mathematics, Hypercomplex Analysis, Kinetic Theory, Mathematical Relativity, Matrix Theory, Modelling and Numerics, Optimization, Numerical Linear Algebra, Orthogonal Polynomials, Proof Theory, Robotics, Scientific Computing, Semigroups, Stochastic Processes, Time Series, Type Theory. CMAT is committed to a policy of high quality research, which is witnessed by publication in renowned journals, benefits from the interaction with prestigious national and international research centers, and is part of several international networks. The Unit is strongly committed to increase its overall performance, along three related vectors: (a) Strengthening national and international collaborations, promoting new scientific partnerships, organizing prestigious conferences, and other relevant events; (b) Enhancing participation in research projects and networks; (c) Increasing and renewing critical mass through the FCT tenure program and by creating postdoctoral positions supported by programmatic funding; (d) Attracting doctoral students through the programs in which it is involved, and research fellows, thus attracting the best students and forming highly specialized professionals for a demanding society and an advanced industry; (e) Actively engaging in scientific outreach and awareness through collaborations with local and regional entities such as companies, libraries, schools, foundations, organizing and participating in activities to interact with society.
