Abstract
The Centre for Classical Studies (CEC)’s hallmark as producer of world-leading research is its work on what CEC has been calling ‘a Portuguese approach to the Classics’.
This involves studying the transmission of ancient texts, how they were read, the new genres they inspired, the authors who engaged with Classics, and the challenging attitudes towards Classical texts, particularly in Portugal, where there is still much work to be done in this area.
Furthermore, contemporary Classics face new challenges and opportunities. They involve broadening the scope to cover regions beyond the Mediterranean, exploring current issues such as identity, gender, race, and social justice, and engaging in the global academic conversation to ensure that the work has an impact beyond national borders.
Within this context, the CEC has three objectives:
A BROAD AND INNOVATIVE RESEARCH AGENDA
CEC is committed to producing internationally excellent and significant research across all its domains. This commitment involves addressing issues and topics prompted by societal challenges and recent discussions within the field, transcending an overly traditional view of Classics.
RECRUITMENT
In order to meet the highest international research standards, it is imperative to attract high-caliber researchers and highly qualified students. CEC is dedicated to fostering an optimal environment for welcoming, supporting, and nurturing the career advancement of young researchers, recognizing the mutual benefits of investing in their development.
SOCIETAL IMPACT
CEC aims to bridge the gap between research and its real-world impact, in alignment with United Nations Development Goals. Our strategy involves engaging with a diverse array of stakeholders to foster inclusivity within the discipline and ensure open access to all.
INTERNAL ORGANIZATION
CEC has identified ten High Potential Research Teams (HPRTs), anchored in small groups formed by senior and junior researchers. They are CEC’s first level of organization.
HPRTs fall under five Thematic Areas, designed to coordinate activities efficiently and to promote cohesion and communication between groups:
1. CLASSICA: aims at examining classical texts. (coord. Serra);
2. MEDIEVALIA: dedicated to Late Antique and Medieval texts in both Greek and Latin (Coord.: Alberto);
3. HEUREKA: fosters interdisciplinary collaborations and expands the horizons of Classics into other fields and geographic regions (coord.: Mota).
4. RESCRIPTA: encompasses projects related to the literary reception of classical themes and texts in Neo-Latin and Portuguese literature (coord.: Tarrío).
5. LIBRARIANSHIP& INFORMATION SCIENCE: focuses focusing on libraries, archives and museums, management and communication of information and information behavior (coord.: Silva).
CEC is chaired by a Director and a Vice-Director, assisted by a Scientific Council of all Integrated members who hold a PhD.
