Abstract
As an interdisciplinary R&D unit, CIDEHUS promotes an analytical framework that contextualizes research inquiries within a temporal dimension. For the period of 2025-29, it has elected diversity and change as the focal points of its work on the South, conceptualizing it as a region characterized by multiple heritages and interactions where various extreme phenomena are observable today. This encompasses Portugal, Southern Europe, the Mediterranean, and regions of the southern hemisphere historically linked with Portugal. It represents a complex landscape where diversity has prompted adaptations, yet also tensions and conflicts. The ramifications of diversity and change present intricate and pressing challenges on the current global agenda.Accordingly, these concepts will guide our research and contributions.
The foundation will be built upon categories emerging from the Humanities and Social Sciences, infusing them with a temporal dimension. The objective is to cultivate a critical, interdisciplinary, and interconnected approach to diversity over the long term.
CIDEHUS will now be structured into 3 groups, including a pole at UAL,and will prioritize the following axes with high ethical standards:
1.Conduct interdisciplinary research on its central problem, with analyses on different scales and in dialogue with other institutions and networks.
2.Develop high impact projects, seeking to diversify sources of funding.
3.Expand internationalization and interinstitutional cooperation, giving special attention to the Mediterranean area, Africa, and Asia.
4.Contribute to the quality of advanced training, especially of the Center’s doctoral programs, the Erasmus Mundus TPTI Master, and new courses.
5.Invest in its early-career researchers, providing them with multifaceted training and creating conditions for stability.
6.Disseminate research results, maintaining a commitment to open access and open science.
7.Enhance the visibility of the Center's publications (journals and its own book collections),opening them up even more to the outside.
8.Reinforce outreach to global-local communities and knowledge transfer, contributing to scientific literacy and lifelong learning.
9.Invest in transfer as a means of co-creation,citizen science, audience training, and innovation empowerment.
10.Maintain the digital curation policy, contributing to a science that, based on rigorous data collection methodologies and FAIR principles, reuses data, adds quality and plurality to archives, and preserves data in the long term.
11.Contribute to the expansion of the chairs and laboratories.
12.Promote compliance with the SDGs,proposing more sustainable and resilient policies, and a more informed global citizenship, endowed with historical memory and capable of critical thinking.
This is all based on consistent internationalization, a strong focus on team training and IT development and a non-hierarchical institutional culture that empowers us for interdisciplinary approaches.
