Abstract

CTS research focuses on engineering systems with a cyber-physical dimension, covering modeling, design, development of support technologies and methods, proposition of adequate governance models, application and assessment. Planned activities for 2025-2029 aim to significantly contribute scientifically and technologically to the advancement of the next generation of human-AI-centric, collaborative, safe, sustainable, and resilient cyber-physical systems (CPS), solidifying CTS as a globally recognized reference center in the field of “Integrated Human-AI CPS”. Research activities will target systems with growing levels of intelligence, autonomy, and hyper-connectivity, while recognizing the key role of humans and their interaction with AI systems in value creation. This entails human-centric CPS emphasizing human-AI collaboration, safe and secure CPS, including self-healing mechanisms and defense against cyber-threats, and resilient CPS capable of managing unforeseen disruptions and even progressing towards antifragile CPS that gain strength after disruptions. Sustainability concerns, such as energy efficiency and systems optimization, will underpin the research. CTS aims for interdisciplinary integration across multiple knowledge areas to address the various layers of abstraction of CPS, from smart electronic devices and sensors to large networked cognitive systems-of-systems. This ambition is supported by the track record of past achievements by CTS members, who have made significant contributions in various key areas, maintaining world-wide recognition. CTS is committed to addressing contemporary societal challenges, with a strong emphasis on applied research in industry and services, guided by a continuous pursuit of research excellence and effective valorization of research outcomes. This commitment extends to the vigorous training of young and early-career researchers and active engagement in international networks, contributing to strategic research agendas and collaborating with societal stakeholders. In the previous phase CTS continued its strategy of wide dissemination of results, reflected in a publication rate that exceeds international standards in its field. This period emphasized a paradigm shift from conference publications to high-quality journals, a strategy that CTS will continue to adopt in the coming period. However, as part of its internationalization strategy, CTS will maintain a robust presence in the scientific committees of international conferences, in collaboration with relevant societies such as IEEE, IFIP, IFAC, and CIRP. Special attention will be given to early-career researchers through focused training, coaching, the organization of annual conferences like DoCEIS and YEF-ECE, and the implementation of strategies for their integration into permanent career positions.
