Abstract

The Geosciences Centre (CGeo) is a multidisciplinary and multi-institutional R&D unit that bridges geo-resources and societal challenges through geotechnological and humanistic solutions. It is a knowledge hub with half a century of existence, currently comprising 54 integrated researchers and 152 collaborators structured as a consortium of the University of Coimbra, the Polytechnic Institute of Tomar and the Earth and Memory Institute (central Portugal), the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (northeast of the country) and the Autonomous University of Lisbon (inthe capital). CGeo is committed to delivering projects and research outputs through transversal integrated approaches with a special emphasis on benefiting society, capacity-building, and the advancement and sharing of knowledge, emphasizing N-S and S-S cooperation. The Activity Plan for 2025-2029 addresses fundamental questions embedded in a geoethical approach: the Earth’s evolution and its geosystems; the characterization, transformation, and responsible use of geological resources; and the understanding of human adaptive strategies with a focus on heritage and land management. Research is organized into three Grand Themes, which strongly contribute to achieving SDGs 15 (the only one with a decreasing trend in Portugal), as well as SDGs 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12, 14 and 17: i) Geosystems and Earth Evolution, focusing on fundamental geosciences to deepen our understanding of the complex interactions among earth's various geosystems and their role in shaping the planet's evolution, particularly the continental crust and life; ii) Geo-resources, Geomaterials, and Environment, focusing on solutions for the responsible use of geological resources, linking socioeconomic and environmental perspectives throughout the resource lifecycle, from prospecting of raw materials to recycling, strongly aligned with the EU and UNESCO goals; and iii) Heritage and Landscape Management, operating as a transversal theme that bridges science and society through interactions with the first two and according to three programs: geoarchaeology and prehistory, territories and integrated landscape management and geoheritage and geoparks. CGeo is well-connected within the international realm, with active international collaborations with a wide range of researchers and institutions around the world. This facilitates the organization of scientific events of an international dimension, a common practice within CGeo, which we are committed to continuing throughout the 2025-2029 cycle. The unit is strongly committed to promoting advanced training and mentoring students and ECRs through specialized workshops and tailored mentorship, as well as supporting ECRs' integration into permanent career positions with a financial commitment via FCT-tenure. This enables them to become mentors for the next generation of doctoral students, thus ensuring the continuity of CGeo and fostering a future generation of researchers.
